Draco seems to be suggesting someone should set up a parallel league here.

I have created a league for the Rebel Outpost. It will hold up to 20 teams.

I have a question about how it is set up (assuming this league is similar to the WC one). How do you earn wins and losses? Like, lets say I'm matched up against wombat during week 1 and the only categories are OPS, HRs, and ERA. If I have a better OPS and more HRs than Wombat during the week, then do I win 2-1? And so my record will be 1-0 and his 0-1?
If so, what happens if a player has seven games during a week and another has six? I'd probably want start someone with a 7-game week over one that only plays six games. Also, if we have wins as a category, wouldn't I want to time it so my starting pitchers have two opportunities for wins during a week rather than one?

The way it worked last year was each statistical category counted as a "game". In your example, you would come out of the week with a 2-1 record and Wombat would come out 1-2.

My, my Wombat, that's a crazy league. Points for fielding percentage but not home runs or batting average? I like some things - no saves, limited transactions, to name a few, but I'm not sure I'll stay in with so many quirks.

Why is there only currently 5 batting categories, but only 4 pitching categories?

Shouldn't we keep the # of categories the same for both?

Anyone else? (I know this is a work in progress, but I just wanted to throw in my $.02)

Draco just posted a new proposed set of categories on the CAS board that seem a lot, lot better than the old ones.

I'm still curious how it is going to be handled if someone has a player that plays 7 gms in a week vs. someone who plays 6..
also, do we have a bench? or a minor-league team? (actually, that could kind of get interesting..)

Pseudolus
02-25-2002, 01:33 PM
How it worked last year:

You did have a bench. You listed as "active" 8 starting position players, 1 "DH" (who could be any offensive player), and X pitchers (where "X" is a definate number, but one I don't recall). Only the results of ACTIVE players counted for/against your fantasy team. The active status of players could be changed every day (maybe you know one of your guys sits against tough lefties, for instance), and were locked in (for that day) as active or in- as of the start time of their team's game.

So if one guy plays 7 games in a given week, he has that many opportunities to win points for your team. If he plays 6, ha has that many. If you know he's not playing, you can opt to "sit" him for that day and put in someone who will be playing. It's a balance between counting stats (can't have any "Runs" scored by sitting on the bench) and rate stats (should you put in a guy who could drag down OPS, or is it better to leave the position essentially blank?).

Okay, I just saw the commissioner's note.

I take it we are not supposed to sign up for both leagues?

Some of us (okay, maybe just me) are fantasy sport junkies, and would enjoy playing in both....

Currently, there are fourteen teams in the Cooler League. Their autodraft initiation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12. Their league may fill with up to 20 teams. Once their autodraft takes place and the number of teams is verified the Rebel League will cap their number of teams accordingly. Upon reaching that cap an autodraft initiation date will be set for the following Tuesday.

Currently, there are eight teams in the Rebel League.

Statistical Categories (Pitchers): Wins
Saves
Strikeouts
Earned Run Average
(Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched

You earn wins, losses, and ties per category per week. You match against an opponent each week but you do not earn wins by beating your opponent, only the thrill of victory. You do have a bench of four players that can be rotated on a daily basis.

The statistics are still be discussed at the Water Cooler (http://www.casact.org/students/forums/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=003180). They are expected to be finalized tomorrow to aid in setting a draft list.

I have no problem with anyone joining both leagues. After the cap has been set in the Cooler League, I will place added encouragement to anyone who wishes to play in both leagues.

If we aren't "matched" up against an opponent each week, how is it determined whether we earned a W, L, or tie in each category each week?

I'm in again. Based on their underperformance last season, the Psluggers have been rechristened the Psluggards. I expect this to motivate my players and add to team chemistry by giving them a common enemy - me. Further punitive measures may include (but are not limited to): making team uniforms pink, serving only gruel at post-game spreads, and flashing derisory pictures of players' mothers on the Diamondvision.

Draco: Can you hold forth on the "Maximum Moves" setting? What counts as a "move"? Just trades and waiver-wire pickups, or things like changing lineups by substituting from the bench?

LGIC: My understanding is that you will be matched up against a specific opponent each week and will win, lose, or tie a number of "games" equal to the number of statistical categories used by the league.

My understanding is that a "move" is free agent/waiver pickup (and release if done at the same time) So, if you dump a stiff and replace him at the same time, it counts as one move. If you dump that same stiff and replace him a week later, you've made 2 moves.

Trades are counted separately.

Selecting your daily roster is not a "move".

This is what confused me..

Separately, I don't know about being able to join both leagues.. I'd rather them try to even out the size of both leagues, having some people volunteer to join ours.. so everyone has one team, and equal chances to win it all..

I think a trade is both a trade and a move, but after reading Hanse I am not sure. Player acquisition from free agency (players not a team) is a move. Moving a bench player to a starting spot is not a move.

I think it is likely the Cooler League will reach twenty teams by Tuesday, March 12. The current count is sixteen teams. With additional time for the draft, I think the Rebel League will pull enough participants to match.

Are you sure about that? When I view my team, I only see slots for the 9 batters, 4 SPs and 1 RP. Is the bench just not shown on this screen, or do we not have one?

The League Settings screen shows that we do have a DL slot, but I don't think we can move players on and off as freely as a true bench. I think they can only be put on if they really are on the DL, although they don't have to be taken off as soon as the player really returns to action.

With a 20-team league, the universe of decent players gets used up pretty quickly. I think the initial Yahoo draft includes 300 players. 300/20 gives only 15 players per team. Maybe because of this Draco chose not to have a bench? That would make playing the game less time consuming - you wouldn't have to check anticpated starting lineups every day to see whom to bench.

Anonymous

The bench is the maximum number of players per team minus the other slots. Our maximum is eighteen minus nine batters and minus five pitchers arriving at four bench players. Yahoo spelled that out in the commissioner tools.

The player has to be on the DL as noticed by Yahoo to be moved to the DL. This will be noted on your team page by a red DL against that particular player. Once on the DL and after the red DL indicator is removed from that particular player you will not be able to acquire any other players without first moving back the player formerly on the DL.

The player universe is 902 players and will be continually expanded throughout the season. Player number 900 is a starter!

Draco commented the purpose of a short bench was to limit time involvement and level the playing field against stockpiling.

Just signed up and I have the first of what are sure to be many stupid questions to follow.

How does this automated draft work exactly? I assume it alternates by round (if you're 1st in 1st out of 20 teams, you're 40th in 2nd, etc.). How does it prioritize rankings and player positions on your roster needed to be filled? For instance, if I need a SS but my next ranked available SS is 100 players down on my available rankings, does it skip those 99 players above it to fill the position? Or will it fill a reserve position based on rankings, while leaving open my starting SS position until I get closer to that SS ranking 100th? Also, is whatever methodology that is used to get your starting position player lineup also used to choose between selecting a pitcher vs. position player during the draft?

Thanks in advance.

I assume it alternates by round (if you're 1st in 1st out of 20 teams, you're 40th in 2nd, etc.).

Actually, I think it "snakes". If you're last in round 1, you pick first in round 2, last in round 3, first in round 4, etc.

How does it prioritize rankings and player positions on your roster needed to be filled?

IIRC, it takes the highest-ranked player who plays a position you have not yet filled. Once your starting lineup and active SP and RP slots are full, it picks the highest-ranked player irregardful of position.

For instance, if I need a SS but my next ranked available SS is 100 players down on my available rankings, does it skip those 99 players above it to fill the position?

If SS is the only slot you haven't yet filled, I think that this exactly what will happen. Otherwise, on the way down that list of 100, it will find a player that fills a slot you have open, and will choose that player.

Hope this is clear. It makes a lot of sense when you see it happen, but it's not so easy to explain.

[/quote]Just so you know, I got 2 second basemen (both listed as 2B only) before I got my shortstop. Apparently the second one fills my "utility" slot. Plus you may get multiple players at a position if they are listed at more than 1 position (I probably have 4 "first basemen")

The Rebel League (http://www.casact.org/students/forums/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=003201) still needs six teams. Invite your friends or play a team in each league.

One of these days I'll have to sift thru that list and rearrange the order ... I've got until at least Tuesday though, right ?

Anonymous

Yes, the autodraft will be turned on Tuesday, so you have almost a full week left to decide your draft order.

There are still three open slots to join the league. Thus far 37 teams have joined the two leagues.

I'm in.

Only one spot left.

Lookout, I'm known as the King of the Autodraft...

Ultimate Anyone?
03-21-2002, 03:48 PM
Okay, I snagged the last spot to make sure the league would have an even number of teams.

Commish: If someone else wants in, feel free to move me out. (I'm also in the Cooler League, so I won't be shut out of quality actuarial fantasy baseball.)

Kitten, which team are you?

Kitten is an impartial observer. She doesn’t have any ties to the teams to my knowledge. She was asked to determine the order with a randomized spreadsheet formula for this reason and her obvious integrity.

It's not the same order I moved from 18th to 15th, yippee, looks like Maddux is out, Rivera's in.

Oh, whoops, I hadn't even noticed those numbers before the names. Hehe.

Uh uh, I just wanted a name that had the word "Mighty" in it, and Tacos seemed like a natural follow-up. Is there really such a thing as a mighty taco?

This is the final order. You may check draft results to see what number picks you will take.

I don't live in Buffalo anymore, put there is a local chain called "Mighty Taco". It beats the hell out of Taco Bell and they have some of the funniest commercials on the face of the earth.

anxious for the draft.

What's the chance of me getting Sosa with the 20th pick? anyone want to trade down in the draft - at this point I don't have much to offer. But. I'd give someone in the top 10 my 9th & 10th rounder for a swap of 1st round picks.

Commish, is that legal?

I might give you my 1st(#3), 16th (318), and 18th (358) for your 1st (20), 2nd (21), and 4th (61).

I don’t oppose trading picks of unknown players but it would be hard for me to enforce. You may certainly have a gentleman's agreement (unless there is no clear benefit to both sides). I am sorry the draft process is taking so long.

As a Cubbie, you may want to check the a sports page today.

Why? Superstars win these leagues. It's a long way down from 3 to 20. You might even be able to get Sosa at 3.

Draft is done... the league looks pretty well-balanced, although there were a few clunker teams I thought. My personal favorites are firsttimer, who's got the best pitching but the worst hitting, and Harry's Hitmen, who's got the best hitting but the worst pitching. I can't wait to see those two match up.

Decisions, Decisions....

What to do with the #1 Waiver Priority?

I definitely have a few holes in my starting pitching, but I'm fairly happy with my results having the last pick in the draft..

What to do, do I gamble on David Wells? or do I try and build with trades.. I'm set at closer if anyone sees one they like on my roster, offer it up. I'm looking for SPs...

I think you're right DRZ, I need to talk to firsttimer, he/she is stacked up on the mound..

Psued,

I guess the tactic of calling them the Psluggards only deflated your players rather than motivated them. :(

You must have Tim Salmon, Brad Fullmer, or both. The Angels have disappointed me so far.

Frummie,

The beatings will continue until morale - and performance - improve.

PS - Can someone tell me how poorly I'm doing this week? We're having funky internet problems at work and I can't access the server that runs the game. I can't get to my pseudo-mail account, either, so if anyone's proposed a trade to me since the weekend, send me a PM so I make sure to dial in from home to take care of it. (Luckily, www.actuary.ca is one of the few internet servers that isn't giving me problems.)

Since my last trade proposal ended in controversy (and veto), I figured I'd bounce this one off the group:

Todd Helton and Carlos Beltran to frum's hassidim (No I'M Clueless!)
Bret Boone and Carlos Pena to Doodletown Ducks

What do you all think?

{edited to correct misspelling)

Anonymous

I think you steal that deal if you walk away with Helton and Beltran. In a keeper league, I can see taking Pena in a trade-off for Helton if you couldn't keep Helton next year, but why in a one-year league ?

Of course, I look now and see that Beltran isn't even starting for the Ducks, so I can see that part of the deal if he can get Boone. Helton is a big extra to throw into the deal though.
