As I type this, most of our LAN is down again, for the fourth time today. I would estimate we lose at least an hour a week to network downtime. Is that normal?

That was normal at the company I interned at, but my current place is really good about that sort of thing. Sorry to hear of your frustrations.

We started to have problems like that, so IS went out and got more hardware to solve the problem pretty darn quick. The decrease in productivity was alarming since we are a near paperless shop.

This led to one very bad month when everything was installed, didn't work right, was brought down, fixed, was brought back up, repeat, etc. but now things are going well.

Good luck, and may the budget gods smile on your IS dept.

OWK maybe there's something going around. We lost an entire day last week!

If we ever had that much down time, it would really hit the fan.

Of course, if it takes 6 hours to run a query to get a year of claims for one group, that's one of many systems performance issues, and they'll do what they can and work with the vendor to monitor activity blah blah blah.....

(they've actually made some improvements, and only about 1/3 of the sarcasm is deserved)

Way too often IS puts in something "new and improved" over the weekend. Invariable, things don't work right and it takes longer to do anything and production crashes. Even their instructions as to how to use the new item always have errors in them. You would think they would test their written instructions before handing them out.

I think maybe a mole got into your system and chewed the wires Obi-Wan.
