View Full Version : POKER: Nothing like totally overplaying a hand

Let me preface this by saying I can be a dope sometimes.

I'm in a WSOP qualifier, 2nd hour, in 50th out of 80-ish. Stack is about 5,000, blinds at 100/200. I'm late-middle position. I've stolen a set of blinds twice over the previous 15-20 hands.

Ok here's the hand:
Get dealt 55.
Everyone folds to me.
I decide to make it 2,000 to go and hope everyone fold behind me like they've done previously.
Everyone folds except the BB who thinks & thinks and eventually calls.
He has me covered, but barely.
Immediately I decide he doesn't likely have a big pair, he'd re-raise in this spot. I figure AK, MAYBE AQ or AJ, or (more likely) a small pair, like me.
Flop is QQ8.
I now have to decide if AQ is actually likely. I decide not. 2,000 pre-flop call on AQ? I wouldn't.
So I still figure he's got a small pair, but he has no reason not to think I have a big pair with my pre-flop raise.
So I go all-in wanting him to lay down his small pair at the notion that I must have the Q or a big pair that has his beat.
Again, he only called my pre-flop bet so I think I can get him to laydown. I could be sitting on AA for crying out loud.
He calls and shows me 88. :swear:

Yes, I overplayed my 55, got caught with my hand in the cookie jar after putting too much in pre-flop. I guess all I can say in my defense is that I read him right, small pair. Flop comes Q-Q-non eight, I bet he goes away when I move all-in. But nooooooooo, it had to be QQ8.

I really hate poker sometimes. Usually when I make a bonehead move like this. Oh well, I was able to get back to studying.

Similar situation in my $3 satellite to the 215.

I get KK in mid position, one limp and guy on my right makes it 3x, i come over the top making it 8-10x, all fold to the BB who calls the rest (including original raise) fold.

Flop comes 488, BB imediately comes all in. I think about it and call ( i can't believe he is going to play anything that has me beat in this way. He shows 44.

Calling with 44 with a limper and original raiser still left to act, Its one of those mistakes that i'm stupid enough to pay off.
