Do you generally carry a backpack to work? If not, any particular reason?

Yes, to hold clothes to work out, books, etc. Also, it's better when making the trek up the hill to the bus. I've had this backpack for 10 yrs now (all through college, trips to Europe, etc.). I guess I'll buy a gym back instead eventually, but for now the backpack is the status quo.

No. Looks out-of-place with a suit and heels. :D
Carried one in college, though.

Now its a briefcase or a tote, depending on the situation.

What really gets me is the people who have totes on wheels with the long handle, like they're going to the airport every day as they come to work...

Yeah, I think they're funny looking too. All these women had them when I was in college. They're were many "older" (as in 30+ at the time) women dragging these along, who commuted to college and brought the whole kitchen along so to speak.

I see lots of those wheeled-suitcase-thingies being used by elementary and middle-school kids these days.

When I switched from a briefcase to a backpack, I got hassled by my kids who feel my backpack is not professional.

I think they are irked that Dad has something that is the same as they have.

I have never carried a backpack in my life! Guess I've been sheltered these 61 years. :) I carry a briefcase and a laptop to work.

What kind of stuff do you guys regularly carry to work that requires a backpack?

On the rare occasion I need to carry anything to or from work that's more than a handful (or matters if it gets wet, in the winter) I bring a handbag.
If I'm leaving directly from work to the airport in the afternoon, then sure, I'll bring my backpack to work, but that hardly ever happens (:

I work from home, so I don't carry anything except my butt out of bed into my office.

It's not like we have red Swinglines here at the office to swipe... and even if we did, I'd only bring it back to work to be the rebel employee.

I carry my study stuff in my backpack. It is usually the current material I'm reading, the applicable All-10 manual, and a spiral notebook for working problems, along with the extras....calculator, etc.

if there was only someway to merge that backpack design with the Segueway, I might find them cool....

Study stuff. My lunch. A little bit of paperwork. Shoes in the winter. A book to read if I get stuck somewhere waiting around.

Some of us take the subway to work, so it's not like we've got a car to store stuff in. I've got all sorts of stuff in my pack - lots of time I do grocery or other shopping after work, and I need the pack to tote stuff about. Ever since I moved to New York, I've carried my backpack around with me everywhere. Much easier to hold onto than a handbag.

My backpack contains my 72-hour emergency supply kit, so I would carry it to escape, e.g., from fire, flood, or storm.

High praise, thank you!

The competition for "one of the silliest threads of all time" is indeed fierce.

The backpack is for study materials. Use of both straps limits the damage to the back. I care more about my back than what anyone else thinks of my appearance.
So, half the year I use a backpack.

Saw dust. It's the backpacks I'm stealing.

Yes- it contains my laptop. I prefer that to the usual laptop case because it leaves my hands free and has room for things I like to have all the time like my cell phone charger and the battery pack (if I'm traveling). I can also play the silly game of sticking my purse into it at the security checkpoint so it counts as one carry-on.

I agree that the wheeled carts look like someone is perpetually ready to leave for the airport but I think most people (including kids) use them to protect themselves from back injuries.

What are we back in 12th grade again here? What kind of professional carries a backback, or for that matter, has a discussion about what other people carry? No wonder so many on this forum are still taking exams -- they're still in middle school!

This reminds me this episode of Simpsons.

Backpacks are cool. How else do you sneak the cooler with a six pack of beer into the office?

I carry a "company" backpack, so that makes it OK.

Couple of years ago I got a nice Eddie Bauer backpack at a company function, and it has the company name and logo stitched on it in coordinating colors. It works great for my study materials, lunch, a book to read while waiting, back-up tapes from the server, advil for those REALLY long days, etc.

Prior to the propaganda gear, I carried a leather tote bag. Looked nice, but not comfortable.

Generation gap -- backpacks were for campouts, hikes; briefcases for school, until I was about done with college.
