Rangers made out like bandits with Bure, but then deal away York to Edmonton for Poti.
Flyers had to mortgage the future to get a center to help with loss of Roenick and Primeau last night.
And Colorado made another deadline deal to get Kaspiritis.

Flyers paid thru the nose for a 39 y/o free agent-to-be. Did I miss something or isn't Roenick only going to miss a couple of weeks ? Primeau, I haven't heard yet, but that was a high price to pay.

The first round pick the Flyers gave up was someone else's that they had acquired in another trade. I have heard that the other picks they traded were other peoples' too, but I don't know for sure. What surprised me is that they gave up their top goalie prospect. Cechmanek is hurt, 31, and fell apart in the playoffs, while Boucher has been wildly inconsistent over his career.
On the Rangers:
The deal they made out best on was the Poti trade. Poti and Murray for York? Sather must have some dirt on his old buddy Kevin. Still I wonder about Poti's ability to handle the pressure of New York. I think he'll start off great. But after the euphoria wears off, he'll start making the kind of boneheaded mistakes that young offensive defensemen make as they mature. Did being booed mercilessly in Edmonton teach him a lesson in how to handle things like that? Because the fans in New York are going to be ten times worse if he struggles.
I wouldn't want Bure on my team. He's one dimensional dressing room poison. No, the Rangers didn't give up a lot to get him, but that's because with all the baggage (salary, personality) he isn't worth nearly as much as other top scorers. Losing Ulanov wasn't a big deal, as he was a 6th/7th defensemen (as one writer said "He will fit right in on the worst defense corps in the NHL"), but I wouldn't be so willing to give up a top defensive prospect like Novak given the goals-against problem the Rangers have, and with Leetch getting old. So overall, the deals were good looked at individually, but in the big picture I don't think they helped the team, and they are still going to miss the playoffs.
I like what Montreal did. Fiset is a solid back up, and French Canadian. They had better use him 2-3 times before the playoffs so Theodore can get some rest. I would not be surprised if the Habs knock out a top seed for three reasons:
1) Jose Theodore
2) Saku Koivu. If he comes back for the playoffs, even in a diminished role, think of the lift it would give his teamamtes
3) Forum ghosts. Some years, all calls just seems to go their way, the seas part, and the Habs win the Cup when it seems like there is no way they can. Granted, it won't be so easy now that Andy Van Hellemond has retired from refereeing.
It pains me to say it, but Slegr was a solid acquisition by the Wings. He should take some of the heat off Lidstrom and Chelios, and any move that means you can play Steve Duschene less is a good one.

I would like to see the Habs do something in the playoffs, but I don't know about those ghosts. Players like the ammenities of a new arena, but ghosts don't. For example, the leprechauns still haven't found their way into the Fleet Center.
On another note, what the hell to the Devils do? Let's trade our first line center for a guy 8 years older! I think Arnot scored the winning goal in the Cup finals 2 years ago. The Stars made out like bandits!

Devils trade - Nieuwendyk got the Conn Smyth trophy the year before. And as for age, Mckay is as old as Nieuwendyk, while Langenbruner is as young as Arnott.
The reason Devils gave up Arnott may have to do with money. They tend to let guys go before they have to pay them big.

I think the Arnott deal would have been awful if Hitchcock was still around (and will be if they still have the same "system" in place.)

Don't forget that coach Jacques Demers went praying in Basilica Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré when in Quebec.

I think Arnott is in the second year of a 4-year $16 million contract. The Devils have dealt some players in order to avoid contract issues, but not at this stage.
Langbruner is on pace to score 12 goals this year and his points have gone down every season since 1998! Nieuwendyk is 36 and is a much bigger injury risk. This is HORRIBLE trade for the Devils. HORRIBLE!

I think Kasparitis will be a big help in Colorado. He's a guy that wants to work hard every minute--he got traded yesterday, and almost got to the game on time to play that night.

The Avs are as good as any team in making player additions. That, along with keeping their core of clutch performers means they will be a force in the playoffs again. Roy's looking at "One for the thumb".

He may go injured, Kid, but I've always liked Nieuwendyk. I think he's made an excellent contribution so far.

And why do you think the Devils inlcuded their 2002 first round pick? This is the part I REALLY don't get....beyond the 8 year difference.
I will usually keep an open mind about trades since there may be something I am missing, but not in this one. Lou Lamoriello has said for years he would never make a trade just to shake things up. He essentially said the reason for this is to make a change to try to help the team. Way to go Lou!
I have cheered for the Devils for the past few years since the Habs have stunk and the Devils have close ties with Larry Robinson (I wore #19 when I played hockey) and Jacques Lemaire (also an asst. coach at Plattsburgh St who I watched a lot).

Well Kid, I think the Habitants have returned. They're looking good with a relatively light schedule remaining. Much prefer to see them take it.

Give me the Bruins in Round 1, BABY! We'll lay those chumps out. I'll be slapping shots around the living room with my Patrice Brisbois stick. I can already here the chanting in the Molson Center:
NaNa NaNaNaNa Hey,heeeyyyy, Au revoir

The Kings are looking awesome! Cliff Ronning shores up the second line.
