Hi all

If I am interested in getting a lot of client interaction and working in Life, is there any particular type of job/specialty I should be looking at?

I am sitting for Exam #1 in the fall, so no need to rush, just curious.

In my experience life actuaries pretty much never work with clients. If you are in pricing, product development or product management, you work with the agents who are handling client questions sometimes or with the underwriters who are handling agent requests or exceptions, but not with the clients. You can also work with the agents a lot if you are a compensation actuary.

Seems to me you don't really have a good grasp of what the profession is all about. You may want to read up on that first.

Thanks--that is what I wanted to know.

Thanks for the advice. Seems to me you don't understand how written text comes off in newsgroups. Might want to read up on that yourself.

I would like to add the following, as a slight to our lady friend Legally Blonde: Um, aren't agents clients, LB?

But her description of product development is accurate. You might wanna look for a job in product development. Now if we define "clients" to mean anyone not in your company that you might be interacting with on a regular basis, then you might also be dealing with the software developers who design your company's illustration software (if it's not developed in-house), insurance regulators, etc.

Keep in mind, however, that no actuarial position in an insurance company can promise you a steady flow of client interaction, so if it's client interaction that you are seeking, then you might want to consider a job in consulting. Also, even if you do get a job in the product development department of a life insurance company, it is only a matter of time before you get rotated to their valuation department, where you will experience little client interaction, if any. I should add that I am speaking from limited experience with only two companies.

Consider consulting. I've never met a consultant who didn't have any clients.
All of my experience is in the pension field. While it is true that consulting actuaries have clients, most pension actuarial students have little to no client contact.

I'm in life consulting. All of the FSA's here are constantly interacting with clients, be it over email, phone, or in-person meetings (though those are few and far between).

As a student, you won't have a ton of client contact.

Seems to me you're a little touchy. Actuaries in general don't have much client contact. If you want client contact then go into consulting. You'll get more and more as you work your way up.

if you want client contact, try consulting or reinsurance
