Any Xiangg Qi (Chinese Chess) or Shogi (Japanese Chess) players out there?

Hey! I played one of those when I lived in Korea. I'm not sure if you would consider it to be Chinese or Japanese Chess. The pieces have Chinese characters on them. The king is restricted to (if I remember correctly) a 3 x 3 grid. Each of those 3 x 3 grids has diagonal lines and is the only place certain pieces can move diagonally. There was a cannon, which has to be "shot" over your own piece in order to move. And I also believe there was an elephant? that could move like a knight, only it moved 3 up 1 over instead of 2 up 1 over. Does this sound familiar?

Mel,
What you describe is Xiangg Qi (Chinese Chess).
Once upon a time, I was adequate (maybe the equivalent of a 1200 Western Chess rating). A few days ago, a co-worker (who is not a particularly strong player of the game) spanked me. I lost in something like 9 moves. I am hoping to reacquaint myself with the game and get it up to the level of my Western Chess.
Shogi is the one where pieces you capture from your opponent can be brought into play on your side.

Yep, this is the game. Do you know if it can be played on the internet?
Also, are you familiar with "Go"? Now that's a fun addictive game.

I have played some (not particularly good) Go in my day.

I've played Chinese Chess. It has cannons right? I was at one of those nerdy conventions and some guy whipped out a little scroll of paper on pieces that looked like small checkers with pictures on them. True story.
