Round 6 Challenge 2 - Capitals
Many elementary school children can rattle off the list of state capitals far better than your average grown-up. Think of this as a little refresher course, with a Survivor twist. And to be fair to out Northern neighbors, we'll also include the Canadian capitals.
There are 50 state capitals in the U.S. There are 13 Canadian provinces and territories. Each country has 1 national capital. There are 65 capital cities between the two countries. Your challenge is to list them.
Each post must consist only of the name of the capital city (state, province, etc, not required nor penalized if included). Any post which is made by non-players, including those by the team not competing in this challenge, will be ignored. Any post which does not consist of exactly one capital will not be counted when looking at the 6-post criteria described below.
The only posts which will apply to this game are those made in the "Survivor R6C2 - Capitals" thread which I create.
As always, posts may be deleted and it will be as though they never happened.
Scoring system
- First time a capital is posted: +2 points
- If a capital is repeated within 6 game-player posts (six or less) of the first time the capital was posted: +1 point
- If a capital is repeated but not within 6 game-player posts of the first time the capital was posted: -2 points
- If one team double-posts a capital, and the other team posts that capital within 6 posts of the first team's second post (got all that?): +12 points (and no penalties for repeating the capital)
- Edited post: -5 pointsand content of post is ignored
- Posting before I post "Begin Challenge": -6 points
- Posts which contain more than one capital: [b]-3 points[b] for each capital included
- Posts which include information other than capital cities: -5 points (plus the -3 per capital if there is a mix)
To summarize, posting a capital first is good. Posting it a second time is bad (unless you can nab it quick). Edits - bad. Not following the rules - bad. Catching your opponent for a bad move - really good.
This Challenge will begin when I post "Begin Challenge" approximately 120 seconds after the Challenge is posted. It will end 1 hour after the Challenge is posted.

Blue wins 91-53!
Red missed three opportunities to capitalize on a +12 gain, plus one -5 penalty for a garbage post.
Blue missed one opportunity to get the +12.
All 65 capitals were identified (just under the wire on that one) ;)

My Edmonton should not be a -2. If you look at Vern's post, it actually says "Edmington".

And I've already shown a pattern of not being too hard-nosed about stuff like that. So based on the precedent, I'm leaving the scoring as-is.

Unfair. In this case it doesn't matter, but in future cases it might. If that is the case, you need to say that you are not going to count spelling in the rules. IMO, even if you give him the +2 you shouldn't take 2 away from me since you didn't explicitly state it.

Trust me, aces, you can't get the rip-off decision rescinded. The basketball term is "make-up call". He knows he screwed Red out of the win in challenge 1 by not answering about the value of a token, so Red was owed a decision in their favor.
While you can't get the Edmington scoring fixed, maybe you should claim that Vern can't tell the difference between Columbus and Columbia (closer than Edmington/Edmonton) and any time he typed either it should be considered equivalent.

By the way, I intentionally didn't leave you enough advance notice to do a whole lot of research on a listing of state capitals, which is surprisingly hard to find in list format. Lots of Q+As, flashcards, quizzes, maps, etc, but few lists. This would have been a good one:

And for the Canadian stuff:

I actually considered making a list of state and world capitols but then I realized this was probably a financial challenge since you would have spelled "capital" with an "O" if you meant state and national capitols.

"Capitals" is correct for what urysohn wanted. You can't draw any conclusions anyway from someone who thinks Edmington and Edmonton are equivalent.

I believe Capitols are buildings, Capitals are cities.
And nobody put one of those little apostrophe things over Québec (which is really just Québec, not Québec City, I think) but I didn't sweat that either.

When writing in English, it's not usually necessary to include the accent marks from a foreign language. I have always heard it as Quebec City. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec. Finally, that's totally different than getting the name of the city completely wrong. That would be like if I said Olympus instead of Olympia.

You should learn to trust.
What is especially galling is that you sent that challenge to me for proofreading last night, and I indicated that it was fine. Don't you think I would have caught that if it were wrong?

Your Capital clue gave away more than you think. When I saw that, I went about finding websites for US state capitals, Canadian provincial capitals and World national capitals. I was all psyched for this challenge.
And then some :duh: showed up at my desk at 12:59 and expected some work from me :shake: (that's why I was absent for 99% of the challenge).

Your Capital clue gave away more than you think.
Not true. There were only two reasonable usages -- capital cities and capital letters. The letters would have just been silly. ;) But really, the cities were just an excuse. The catch was in the scoring rules. If one team got too post happy, they were likely to score a lot more negatives (and leave the other team a lot of big coups). That's why the scoring rules were posted only when the challenge started.
It was an added bonus that capital-lists were difficult to come by. If a team was lulled into the comfort of a Q+A format, for example, could be playing from behind.
But with the l-o-n-g lag in filling in the list at the end (your posts nearly 50 minutes in completed the list, I believe), I had to assume that those lists were not in hand.
