Round 7 Challenge 2: Where Did I Find That?
I have a variety of images, all collected using Google's Image finder. I would like a link to the original file location on the internet and the Google search term you used to find it.

All the images are combined onto one large JPEG file. Some of the images have been "cut out" but none have been resized from the images you are searching for.

The images will contain clues on what to search on. That clue might be somewhat obvious or not. The search key might be a major part of the image or a detail within it. All images are located on the first page of Google's Image search (should be; I don't know if that varies by region or other personal settings).

For example, if this image was included:
http://biology.usgs.gov/features/kidscorner/images_kc/bear.gif
then you could search on "bear" and the image would appear.

All responses should be made by Private Message to the "RFSurvivor" ID. You may submit as many answer PMs as you wish. I will be scoring on a positive-points basis. No points will be deducted for incorrect answers and teams may submit as many PMs as they wish with subsets of answers. Scoring will be based on total number of correct responses. I will use the link as the scoring criteria, not the Google search term, which is optional (but preferred) information. Note that Google provides a preview image -- if you try to pull the link from the "properties" of this image, you will have the wrong link. If you're not sure how this works, play around with it or ask a teammate. Secondary scoring will be based on the speed with which the last correct response was sent -- if all teams get 30 correct, whoever submitted the 30th correct response first will win.

After the challenge is completed, I will quote each PM and include it in the "Survivor R7C2 - Where Did I Find That?" thread which I will create.

I will be away from a computer all next week until mid-day Friday. However, the "RFSurvivor" ID will be monitored, so you could still see your PMs moving from your Outbox to Sent Items.

The Challenge will begin at 12:00 noon ET on Friday, August 6, and will end on Friday, August 13 at 2:00p ET. I will post a JPEG image in the challenge thread -- the images in this file are slightly smaller than the actual images. The full-size file is not supportable in the free file server I placed the smaller image in. I will also email to each player a link to a file with the actual-size images you will find in Google. You can download that file to your computer. Please DO NOT hit the file too often, or I will hit bandwidth limitations, leaving you unable to access the file.
Game morals: You may not bombard that site intentionally to prevent your opponents from getting the file. I will be PMing the link to prevent non-players from doing the same.

This is Challenge 2 in Round 7. Challenge 1 will be scored first; the winner of Challenge 1 will earn immunity. Challenge 2 will then be scored, with only the responses from the non-winners of Challenge 1 being used. YOU WILL NOT KNOW HOW YOU DID ON CHALLENGE 1 BEFORE YOU NEED TO SUBMIT RESPONSES FOR CHALLENGE 2.

Disclaimer/Credit: I actually borrowed this image from someone else, and appreciate her allowing me to use it for this challenge. She has, however, forgotten a few of the search keys she used. So there are about a half-dozen images that I do not actually have an answer key for.

OK, so I'm searching for the term "plastic donut", and I scroll down and see naked boobies. WTF?!?! I even have safe search on. I'm so confused. :-?

Don't search for "maki" by itself either!

Clarification of some questions received:

(Note -- If there is any conflict between the data below and anything urysohn has answered elsewhere, the answer from elsewhere takes precedence.)

1) In a few instances, teams are reporting that the link to the original picture is not working. In this case, please provide a link to the search engine page that shows the scaled-down picture. I don't know if urysohn will count these, or not, but the above is to establish a procedure for handling this issue when it arises.

2) The winner is the first team with the most correct answers. The use of the number 30 in the rules is an example of the tiebreak procedure. However, it is not the score required to win.

3) If there is a tie, it will be broken in favor of the team that was first to submit their last correct answer. For example, if two teams each correctly answer 33 images, then tiebreak would go to the first team that submitted 33 correct answers.

Interesting. That means the game isn't really over.

Interesting. That means the game isn't really over.
The first challenge isn't over. Only two teams will be scored on this challenge. Assuming Blue wins the first challenge, Green will win this challenge, and Red will go to TC. Can you find your way to TC?

A reminder that this challenge is far from over.

Just to stir the pot a bit, you may be interested to know that there exist at least one of each of the following occurences:

-- An image that no team has submitted any link for yet.

-- A valid link to an image for which another team has reported only a broken link. (I don't know how ury is going to rule on broken links.)

-- An incorrect link (image at the link does not match the one in the original picture.)

Happy searching! :mona:

I'll take them if the Google search term is provided and the preview-image appears in the first page of results and the link provided matches up to that preview-image.

It is rather erratic what shows up on the first page of the search screen. Exactly the same words do not produce the same results each time (this has happened with some of the challenge pictures).

cubedbee
08-11-2004, 07:30 PM
I'm pretty sure google's image search works the same way as google's regular search. In both, the first page results will change over time because of the way the page ranking algorithm works. So, while they might have all been on page 1 when it was made, I'm almost certain they aren't any longer.

Gandalf

At least one challenge image was not on page one, then on it, then off it, currently back on; all with the same search term.

Remember, this only applies to broken links. The link to the Han Solo picture works. He is not the best example of one, but you will not get credit for my sig photo, even though it appears on page 1 with search term "stud". Google also freezes my eye in the preview pane. :swear:

I know exactly what image you're talking about. The first time I KNOW i typed in the keyword and did not see it on the first page. A few days later I typed in the same keyword and it was right smack in the middle of the 1st page.

I'll be fairly lenient with the "first page" rule -- haven't reviewed the results to find out if it'll matter, but it would be surprising if it came down to that.

Good morning!
As I mentioned in the thread, I will be on vacation this week. Someone will be monitoring this ID and will be able to answer questions and make game administrator decisions. If you have questions on this week's challenges, you can either post them in the main thread or send them to this ID. Also, this is the ID you will need to send your challenge answers to for Challenge 2.

Tentative summary from my currently-anonymous helper (thanks!!). Does not include cubedbee's last two entrants. I still need to review them. But unless Green really blew a bunch of them, then they've got this one pretty well in hand.

Inquiring minds want to know: do you know where you found the ones that none of the teams found?

Not all of them, no. And I had thought most of them would still be there, since my wife and I had just done this for a challenge she was in about 3 weeks ago. The Nerd Girl was simply either "nerd" or "geek". We didn't get the fuzzy milk.
I had the list of links we submitted but not the search terms we used. I know the toy fangs were a pain in the arse but we eventually got them. The rooster hat was easy, so it looks like that one is gone. I think those were the only ones nobody got.

Thanks, but inquiring minds still want to know more. What were the links for Nerd Girl, toy fangs and rooster hat?

All of Green's check out -- Banana was dead but the search term had been provided. That's 45 points. Red only submitted 33, so they cannot possibly take the win.

Green wins Challenge 2!

I looked everywhere for that rooster hat. I checked under rooster, chicken, poultry, bird, hat, cap, etc., etc. No sign of it.

Lots of toy teeth images out there, but I could never find one quite like the one in the picture.
