If any game is appropriate for a reference thread, Dictionary! is it. With the main game thread sorted chronologically rather than alphabetically, it is so hard to find the meanings of words quickly.

By editing the first post in this thread to link to the "solution" posts in the game thread, we can quickly find the meanings of all those important words we've learned.

More later after the mods make it a sticky. In each of those three posts, I had to link to the list of definitions, since the solution referred back to the number in the original post. Do you think we need a link to both the definitions and the solution in that case?

You wouldn't need a Dictionary sticky if there weren't all those **z* poker threads around.

This has been brought to you by BlackAdder outside-the-box solutions, a BlackAdder Company.

Get over it.

I seem to remember that this section, "Games", was created b/c of the poker threads "cluttering" NAT. While chess and some of the other games were in NAT, they seemed to be tolerated since they were less of a nuisance. Poker created "Games". The rest of y'all are just riding our coat-tails. which is fine by me

I wonder if the poker posters "complained" about these other threads being a nuisance to us if we could get just a poker section. again, not a big deal to me

Maybe we can get Traci to create a whiner, cry-baby, I think I am better then everyone else forum. EB could be the mod. Phil Hellmulth might even post occasionally.

LOL! I can hear him now, "I posted perfectly! I can't post any better than that! I guess if there were no luck, I'd always be the post counter leader."

I think this is a great idea. Just the other day I was trying to remember if I was using the word humicubation correctly. It took me forever to hunt it down.

A Dictionary! sticky would a public service. If it should happen to raise the literacy level on this forum, that would be an added bonus.

Shouldn't this sticky go to the Reef?

Is there is any hope of raising the literacy level there?

The reef? Dictionary! is a game, even if it doesn't have 36 options. Come to think of it, when choosing the next word there are nearly 500,000 options in the unabridged dictionary.

We don't harass the chess and poker players. We even have Anonymouse and All Clear participate at times. And we don't start a new thread every time a new word is proposed.

However, we can understand that a third sticky would be a bit much, and realize there is no need for one. RedSoxFan has decreed that he doesn't want additional chess posts in the chess sticky: he'll just edit the first post. We can cooperate with that. We'll just take the second post in that thread as our home page. It will be an aggravation for the Dictionary! players to scroll through the chess home page, but it was RSF's idea first so he can keep post 1.

I see Bama liked the idea of a single home page. Maybe poker can take post 3 in the chess sticky, and then Games only needs one sticky in total. What a great opportunity for the spirit of cooperation!

Trust me, this will work.

Now even Bridge has a sticky :-?

What's next, a Mille Bornes sticky :-?

Dictionary sticky: an idea whose time has come.

Dictionary does not need a sticky - it's only 1 thread! And this coming from a semi-regular player.

If people are having a problem with to many 'sticky' posts then I have no problem with putting all the "Stickies" in one thread.

I also have no problem with a Dictionary Sticky as long as it is for legitimate purposes. (i.e. there is a need) (Just PM the Mods and ask them to sticky a thread you create).
This is not a democracy, if the mods say yes GO FOR IT!

I also think if these are your biggest problems in life you should wake up each day with a very very large smile on your face. :D

See my post above.

But based on Anonymouses post "Wouldn't just editing the first post in the thread to have the links have the same effect?"

The only person who can edit the first post of the Dictionary thread is Gene Yuss, right? And he hasn't played in a while...

Come to think of it, who would create that first sticky post and be willing to edit it for every new word? I once made a list of all the words played and thing provided the definitions, but it never went further because we couldn't put it on the first page of the original Dictionary! thread...it was stuck somewhere in the middle of page 27 or 28 or something like that.

Yep that could be a problem.

The proposal is not to make the current Dictionary! thread the sticky. I don't think the chess, bridge or poker players would freak out if there were two Dictionary! threads (or three counting this one). So Gene Yuss's password is not the issue.

rekrap, since you did such a good job before, only to see it buried in the middle of the thread, you would be a fine choice to start the sticky. If it got too burdensome for you to update the word list regularly, you could give your password to the other players, and have each person who chooses a new word update the sticky to put it in the correct place.

This would be a major service to all users of the RF, not just the Dictionary! players.

I would recommend setting up a new user ID to create the homepage then share that password.

Remember though anyone who has the password can use that ID to post elsewhere. If the wrong person takes advantage of that it is on the ISP of whoever created the 'ID'.
So I would not give the password to everyone.

Unless they can tell which ISP an individual post comes from?

Each post is tagged with the ISP used to make it. The fact a post made by the rekrap id was made from an ISP not otherwise used by rekrap might suggest, but would not prove, that the post was not make by rekrap.

The mods would consider a request for a sticky, but so far I can't see it.

:bump: Now there's even a Diplomacy Sticky :swear:

What's next? a Moon sticky for Ebenezer Kohl? A uno sticky for Tim><?

We're approaching the point that the entire first page will be stickies, and one of them should be for Dictionary.

Finally, the Dictionary! sticky is currently above those silly bridge, chess and poker home pages. Thanks, Glenn.

Hey, EB, next door to the drugstore where I pick up my prescriptions every month (don't ask) is a place called EB Games. I think of you everytime I go by there.
