actuary vixen--

All of my notes and flash cards are hand-written, and I'm not willing to part with those. However, I have several charts that I used to help me memorize the material on the ASOPs, DCAT, risk management, etc (these are in an electronic format). If you'd like to PM me and give me your e-mail address, I would gladly e-mail you my charts.

Share the wealth actuarybert. :)
Send them to me and I'll put them up in the downloads section for everybody. The only thing I need is that you copyright them and release them under the GPL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.txt) so that I can distribute them for free.

Glenn,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try to neaten up my charts a bit and get the copyright agreement in place, and I'll send the file to you later this week.

I also have a condensed outline (about 100 pages, similar to the JAM condensed outlines for courses 5 & 6). It's currently hand-written. However, if there's enough interest, I would be willing to type up my condensed outline and make it available for students to download from this website. So, all you 8I students out there, please let me know if you would be interested in this.

Actuary2000,

I think that typing the notes and distributing them in an electronic format would probably be more efficient. I would be inclined to start with my condensed outline, since it's only about 100 pages. If there's sufficient interest, I would probably be willing to type my detailed outline, too (about 400 pages). Of course, this will take some time, so it probably wouldn't be available until some time in June. (However, I could probably release the outline in installments, and make additional sections available as I complete them).

I'll mark you down as being interested. If other students are interested, please let me know.

P. S. I appreciate your offer to provide compensation in exchange for the notes. But taking the exam is bad enough, without having to spend your own money on study notes. So, I won't ask you to cough up any cash.

Please excuse my ignorance. Where is the downloads section?

Actuarybert, you are one amazing individual. That would be incredible if you did that for us. I did send you a PM. I'd love to see your charts and whatever else you have available. If you need any help typing something....you could fax it to me or something? ...I'd be willing.

Thanks again.

Click on the 'actuary.ca homepage' link in the top left corner of your screen. The homepage has a downloads section and a links area. The downloads right now has two course 4 downloads, and a sample of some 8G study notes.

The Course 8I charts are now available for download from the homepage. A big thank you VERY much to the author for sharing their hard work with the rest of us.

Actuarybert, you are the greatest ever! I'm sure I speak for many others when I say I'd be willing to help prepare your lists. I think if a bunch of us get together, we could create a great (and free) study guide that would save hundreds of hours of outlining.

Actuarybert, this is very generous of you. I anxiously will await your outline. Thanks!

OK, here's the scoop:

As Glenn indicated in his earlier post, my Course 8I charts are now available in the downloads section. They contain summaries of some of the topics that require extensive memorization (i.e. ASOPs, PADs, DCAT, and a few other acronyms). Thanks to Glenn for posting the charts.

Based on the responses that I've gotten so far, I think I will try to type up my full outline and make it available for download from the website. If you would be interested in having a copy of the outline, please post a message in this forum or drop me a PM to indicate your interest, if you haven't already done so. I'd just like to get a rough estimate of the number of people who are interested. (The more students that are interested, the more motivated I'll be to keep typing :D ).

At the rate that I'm typing, I think I could conceivably finish the outline by early to mid-June. I can't make any promises, because a lot of it will depend on my workload and the amount of overtime that I have to work. But I'll do my best to make the outline available in a timely manner.

I think this will be a fun experiment--kind of like the actuarial version of Napster, but hopefully without all of the nasty copyright disputes. ;)

I am using Actex as a guide. I have been spoiled by the JAM condensed outline and I'm not sure what I'll do when I get to that part of my studying. I started early expecting to spend a month or so writing an outline to study by. It just takes longer than you expect. I would definitely be interested in any pre-fab note packets. I have downloaded the charts here but I haven't looked at them yet. Like everyone else, I'm interested to see what BeginWork.com comes up with also.

Actuarybert:

I love you. May I please kiss your keyboard?

Seriously, I think that I can speak for myself and the three others who will be taking the exam with me at work --- we want your notes.

I'll forward a link to the others about the downloadable stuff already out there.

If I pass, I'll nominate you for sainthood -- Saint Actuarybert.

Hi, everyone. Just a quick update...

I'm typing as fast as I can, and I'm about 1/3 of the way through the detail outline. I'm aiming to post the detail outline on this site by June 1. (I'm assuming that most of you are still working on reading the texts and aren't in need of a study guide quite yet, so hopefully June 1 will be soon enough). I can't promise that the outline will be 100% complete by June 1, but I'll at least post the sections that are finished.

For all of you JAM fans out there, I also have a condensed outline, which should come in handy for cramming during the last couple weeks before the exam. I'll start typing that once I finish the detail outline.

One other note:
The SoA has published the syllabus for fall 2002, and a few of the readings have changed since last year. For those of you who have already downloaded the 8I charts, the CIA note on PADs is no longer on the syllabus, so please disregard this chart. Also, a few of the ASOPs have been revised since last year, so the chart on ASOPs will need to be updated. (I'll try to update these charts when time permits).

Hope everyone's studying is going well. Best of luck to everyone who's sitting for an exam next week!

Please, please, please let me know if you need any help. You are doing so much already.

actuary vixen--
Thanks for your offer. The typing is going pretty smoothly, so I'm not really in need of help at the moment. However, I will ask for your help in two areas once I finish the outline:

(1) Proof-reading--I'll try to keep the errors to a minimum, but there are bound to be a few typos here and there. So I'd appreciate it if people would bring any errors to my attention so that I can correct them.

(2) Spreading the word--I really believe (or at least hope) that my outline will be helpful to students in preparing for the exam, and I hope that lots of students will take advantage of it. So, if you like the outline, please spread the word so that others can use it, too.

I'm not registered there, but maybe someone would want to post a link on the SOharA board? Maybe after May exams are done? Just a thought.

Interested! ---- Very Interested! I am sick of taking these stupid exams and really, really, really, really, really want to pass this thing and get these over with and get on with life. If your notes worked for you, that may just be the different angle I need. Of course, more concentration on the stuff they will ask will help, but nobody knows exactly what that will be. Thanks in advance for all your help, and thanks for the charts that I have already downloaded.

You bet I'm interested!!!! I'll take all the help I can get. I've seen the Actex manual and it was a big waste of paper (and$200). Thanks for the offer.

Just a quick update...

I'm still typing. I've made quite a bit of progress on the detailed outline, and I'm still aiming to have it completed and available for download by June 1. It looks like the detailed outline will be about 400 pages. (It's guaranteed to provide endless hours of entertainment ;)) I've tried to keep the page count manageable, but still include enough details and explanations to make the outline understandable.

I'll start typing up the condensed outline after I finish the detail outline. I'll try to finish the condensed outline by late June or early July.

Hope everyone's studying is going well.

Hello again. Here's the latest update...

I've finished typing up the detailed outline (about 480 pages) and the condensed outline (about 100 pages) :P

All that I have left to do is proofread and edit. I'll be leaving on the 29th of May to go to the SoA meeting in Colorado Springs, so I'm going to try to finish everything up prior to the 29th.

I haven't decided yet whether to use a Word format or a .pdf format. Does anyone have strong preferences one way or the other?

If you are going to be kind enough to allow us to put them here for download, we can certainly accomodate both formats.

Thank you so much for your kindness!! I prefer word as I will be able to add my own notes but .pdf is fine for me too!!

ActuaryBert, maybe you should set up a PayPal account for donations for this cause. I plan on downloading it when you're done and I, for one would give you a couple bucks for all your hard work. I understand you don't need compensation, but 400+ pages fer cryin' out loud... let me buy you a Happy Meal at least.

Folks, post here if you'd do the same so ActuaryBert would know to set it up.

I would be happy to donate for all the time you're going to spend typing this darn thing... even if you don't need it you should be rewarded. Do something frivolous with it if you like, like light a cigarette with a $100 bill in a crowded place or something, i don't care... but if these notes are good, you are doing a great service to all of us course 8I wannabes.
