View Full Version : Is the world out to get me (rant)

Here I am...trying to do my last little bit of studying before my first exam. I planned for only 4 hours so that I could go through one old exam. It shouldn't be too hard....or should it.
All I wanted was 4 hours of good review/study time. BUT NO...The world decieded to get me back for all that I have done wrong.
I had about 20 phone calls from different people...some wishing me luck...and other with no clue. For 20 minutes, but felt like 200, there was a truck going up and down my street playing a stupid song trying to get me to buy something from them (think icecream truck). Then once it was starting to get quiet my neighbor starts playing his guitar. After that a friend drops in to give me good luck cake and stay and chat while I eat it....sounds nice...well that was the beginning of an annoying chain of events.
I get a phone call 5 minutes later from my neighbor telling me that a teacher from my school called him to ask me to call the school, they don't have my phone number. I call the school and they tell me that the cake store called them to tell them to call me because the cake was old. (When there are only 6 foreigners in your town everybody knows how to find one of you) So I call my friend who had bought the cake and told her to call the cake shop. Then she went to the cake shop with a Japanese lady (to translate) and they got a bunch of free cakes... So of course they both came back here to eat the free cake...
Aarrg... So now I have to explain to the Japanese lady what an actuary is...why I am taking this test...and all that stuff...
FINALLY they left.
I only had one hour left to study at this point. So I am working hard and was finally on a roll....and then I get a few prank calls.
I had to call it quits....
Why why why me... all I wanted to do was study...
Anyway...I just needed to vent before going to bed....so I can sleep peacefully...
Good luck everyone...it's finally time for course one :-)

If you think that's bad, just wait till you actually take the exam! I almost always hear a lawnmower going right outside the window, or dishwashers talking to each other in the next room. And the air conditioning whine can really get on your nerves!
I think it's all part of the exam taking process. What most people don't realize is that the SoA and CAS hire people to mow the grass, talk in the dishroom, etc. I guess now we can see that they're starting to hire people to make prank phone calls, send old cakes, etc. It's amazing what they'll do for job security! :P
Good luck!

Only I am out to get you. But that's bad enough...
Even I would not call you before your exam. There are right ways and wrong ways to do things...
Good luck on the exam.

We save that sort of thing for the overseas exams. Domestically, we rely on strategically scheduling exams at universities with a good track record of causing loud commotions outside of windows - preferably those erecting new buildings next to the math department. It's just good common sense resource allocation - we can't prank call everybody!

I sat for part 3 in a room with insufficient light to power the crap calculators required before the BA35.
I blame Phil (http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/the_characters/html/character4.html#phil).

oh, um... how about turning the phone... uh... OFF!?
The cake thing just sucks... although you really don't have to explain the actuary thing to the cake lady...
But you know what *really* bothers me during exams?? All that breathing! the IN, the OUT, the IN!!!! It's enough to drive you CRAZY!!!
...are the voices in my head bothering you?...

Get call display on your phone if it is available. Sometimes you just need to screen out the outside world.
And Good Luck, BTW. :)

See that's why we won the war. The Japanese are too polite. Tell the cake lady to get the hell out of your face for sending you an old cake. And slap your friend upside the head for being stupid enough to bother you. And do the unthinkable, HANG UP ON PEOPLE!!

Best of luck on your exam.
At my company, they hire people to hold meetings right out the exam room and giggle non-stop. :swear: At my recent sitting, I asked the proctor to tell them to cut it out! My proctor was nice and did. :)

I feel for you Genki. It is really hard to study the day before the exam. Well for me, I am too stressed out to concentrate anyway. So that extra little bit probably would make little to no difference in the outcome. You really need to relax a little today and not get so crazed.
Just think of it this way. It will all be over at this time tomorrow and all of the stress of waiting to take the exam will disappear. It will be replaced by the stress of remembering all of your mistakes on the exam. :D

:) :) :) :) :) :) UPDATE
Welll...I am offically done course one.....well atleast until the results come in....but I thought I would let you know that things went from bad to worse...and I didn't think anything else could happen.
I tried to go to sleep after I posted....well...It wasn't my night to sleep fast....and finally 2 hours later just when I was falling asleep...RING RING.
My lovely mother called to wish me luck...It took me at least 30 min to tell her how stressed I was...and a little while longer to calm down again.. Finally when I got off the phone I was able to fall asleep.
Fast forward to morning (6 hours later) No problems until I got to my final train station....as it was my first time att this huge station I had to get lost. Then when I found the right exit I got lost again....and then while trying to find the building I got lost for a third time...(Thankgoodness I expected to get lost at least once so had extra time :-)...)
Then to top everything off...when I went to the bathroom before the exam...the zipper on my pants broke...so I had to be held together by pins...
Anyway...I am done....Don' t have to worry anymore...
Good luck everyone...if even with all my problems I could do ok...so can all of you..
GG :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Genki Girl,
You are the biggest exam-nightmare-dream-come-true! It's all so sad that's it's almost hilarious! I hope you pass. And next time you should consider not telling anyone exactly when your exam is. That works wonders.

No, the answer is to tell everyone that the exam is 1 week later than it really is. No one calls a week in advance to wish you luck.

how about 1 week earlier?
Inciidentlly RA, are you related to Fallout Boy?
Radioactive Man

The quality of study one week before an exam is much better than one day before. So why would you want to spoil two good study days answering "Good luck" calls and "How did you do?" calls?
Are you familiar with the origins of Radioactive Man and Fallout Boy? We are not related.
Macroman

I see your point on the one week before. Generally I try not to be at home much 1 week before, so I would tend to get phone messages which aren't so bad.
I'm not familiar with the origin of any comics, except Superman. Could you point me to a source of enlightenement on your history?
Radioactive Man

When I first read your question, I took "related" to mean "family". We are not related in that sense. However, Fallout Boy is my sidekick.

RA,
Thanks for clearing that up. Do you have any post-Simpson's plans? I have heard rumors that the acclaimed 'toon series may be on it's last legs.

I have heard rumors that the acclaimed 'toon series may be on it's last legs.
Didn't the main characters/voices recently extend their contracts for 3 or 4 more seasons? That doesn't sound like a show on its last legs.
Futurama has been cancelled, however. It's still on the Fall schedule, but only because Fox still has 16 unaired episodes. No new episodes have been ordered, and given the amount of time it takes to complete one episode, it's unlikely they are planning to order any more.

I heard the series MAY be on its last legs as well, but I heard that Groening said that it could go on for another few years. :)

One thing's for certain: Futurama never got up there with Simpsons. I think the increase in profanity, sex, and vulgarity took away from what could have been a great show.

I agree with Mel. You put raunch on TV, then have the decency to put it on late, not at 7:00PM.

Last Legs! Say it isn't so!!
I never did get into Futurama much, but The Simpsons is another story.
The good/bad/sad part is that they could show Simpson's reruns every night in primetime and still have better programming than most.
Viva la syndication!! :tfh:
