I am looking for opinions on study manuals for SoA course 6. I have ordered all the textbooks and would like to buy 2 good manuals. Some advice please! Thanks in advance.

Are you looking for C5 (not c6)?

Well, I changed my mind since I did not know that C5 requires 500-600 study hrs. I am rather be well-prepared for C6 than try to push for C5 in October 2002.

Where have you been? Check any number of Course 6 threads here, and you'll get the same answer: JAM.
You won't be able to buy a 2003 JAM for 6 months. In late July you can ask if anyone wants to sell their used JAM (and SOA study notes) to you.

Anyway, start with the books: big-fat-Fabozzi and Investments. you do have a syllabus? You should also know how to split up the chapters according to JAM.

VC, I wouldn't give up on course 5 that quickly. It will be difficult to pass with only 3 months to work with (say if you start after exam result date), but 5 months is very workable.

If you can get your hands on the textbooks, you should see how much you can go through in the next month before deciding to give up on course 5.

As for course 6 material, I used ASM as second notes, and found it to work well. Also, HYPE cards were godsend.

By the way, SOA will not release the syllabus until November, and updated study material won't be avaliable until December/January. So you should check then if you need additional course 6 material. (I am not sure companies are selling course 6 stuff now...)

The books shouldn't change too much. None of them are old enough for a next edition. The Panjer needs it, based on the errata. Maybe MIP, but that book is not in the habit of making new editions very frequently.

Regardless, the learning objectives remain the same, 95% of the material will still be applicable, and a new study note about negative convertible securities might be made.
If you're in no hurry (i.e., no one's pressuring you to take and pass each session), then starting to study early (waaaay early, although I'm sure others are doing the same) for Exam 6 will reap continuous dividends! (A little exam 6 humor there. Waaaay little.) Plus, after you pass that, you can study even longer for Exam 5 -- 15 months!

My two cents:

I started studying for C5 last year the day course 6 results came out and I learned I got a 5. Actually, I started the next day, I got drunk the day results came out. I used JAM, and I scored an 8 with I'd estimate 350 hrs. studying. It is doable.

That was only worth about a penny, so to fill out my two cents, I sure do love the horse (although I don't know what it signifies):

I count 101 days, so that's about 3.5 hours a day.
I'll classify you as way above average (ignoring last year's Exam 6 results, of course).

Click downloads button here:

http://www.studyjam.com/index.htm

It will have the study guide table of contents, which categorizes the reading by Learning Objective, as well as a suggested study schedule, which you can download and modify for your stretched-out schedule.
