View Full Version : Goatees

This is for the men folk out there. But ladies, please chim in with any comments. I was noticing the other day how many men have goatees these days.

Honestly, I'm a huge sucker for a goatee as long as it's kind of full. But, are goatee something like the huge side burns of the 70's? Are our kids going to think, "How STUPID!" when they see pics of guys with nice goatees?

Yes. And it's all Mark McGwire's fault.

Clean shaven now. Had the goatee until a month or so ago. And yes, I think our kids will laugh at us for this "goatee fad".

Yep. The kids sure will laugh. Just like they do about sideburns, hippie beards, etc.

The look will end up dated. Only a clean cut look really stands the test of time well.

Of course, it's a perfectly reasonable choice to look up-to-date now, and to heck with what the grandkids will think! They'll find something to laugh about anyway.

That said, goatees just look silly to me, but I'm older than most guys who wear one, so I don't think they are trying to appeal to me.

I try, but food gets stuck in it, and in the morning I'm not fully awake when I'm shaving. I'm not in perfection mode.

I agree with your wife. uh.... i mean in general. I have no idea what you look like before or after skiing.

There is a point just past the "in bad need of a shave" look and just before the "oh! You're growing a beard" look that is incredibly sexy - IMO. :D

That's about all I can manage no matter how long I go without shaving....I guess there are some advantages to not being a hairy beast but it would be nice to have the option of growing some trendy facial hair.

I'm just glad that the Apollo (speed skater) facial splotch (soul patch?) never caught on that well.

I don't watch TV or read people magazine. I grew my goatee right around 99 or so, b/c it looked cleaner than my beard. My wife couldn't stand the beard.

She loved the goatee. But one day I went to Fantastic Sam's to get a trim and the lady really screwed it up. So I had her shave off the mustache portion of the goatee. Leaving me with a really cool beard around my jawbone. I've wanted to shave it off though b/c I wanted to eventually get a real WASPy look going, but my wife wouldn't let me do it.

Now I find out that the Backstreet Boyz have this same goatee without the mustache.

Has anyone seen The Wall? I wonder if it could be trendy to shave off the eyebrows.

The advice I received was, "If you can't grow a beard, grow a chin." Or was it the other way around. Thankfully I have a chin as the beard was really shabby. Alas, it was caught in film and printed in the PCAS.

Similar to Franchise. Short hair (just combable) and goatee in the summer, longer hair (mostly on top) and beard in the winter. For me it is both a hairstyle change and 'winter coat' thing. I know that saucywench (yes, this RF poster is male) has one of those goatee w/o mustache things.

A couple more things. My goatee and especially my beard are barely passable. I often shave only every other day. My chin grows pretty full (like the earlier comment), plus I hate shaving my chin - more goatee motivation.

Geez, 42, ever think of anything else?

Men sporting groomed beards are (I think) telling others, "Look how much work I put into my appearance. I believe you are shallow, and you think this is important."

Men sporting ungroomed beards are (I think) telling others, "Got any change?"

I have a goatee, with mustache. Shave the rest 2 or 3 times a week. My reason is that the goatee camouflages the stumble on non-shaving days.

Plus I have no discernable chin otherwise.

Plus the chicks really dig it. (Actually, the spouse claims not to care about my facial hair, although it would earn me points to grow the up-top hair long again...)

My reasons for wearing a goatee are similar to Thing's: my chin looks pretty weak otherwise. That and my wife likes it.

A full beard is harder to maintain, I think. I have a harder time trying to decide how high up the neck to start shaving, there's a lot more to trim, etc.

Plus some parts of your face might not grow hair very well, as in my case.

"""Are our kids going to think, "How STUPID!" when they see pics of guys with nice goatees?"""

Yes - and they will be right.

Every time I see a guy with a goatee, I just want to ask - "Excuse me, did you know you have a rat on your face?"

I don't mind a mustache - and some men look great with a mustache and beard. But the goatee has got to go ...

the wife hates facial hair. i started growing a goatee last week, but got rid of it because it wasn't worth the trouble (maybe i got rid of the wrong thing  )

i prefer the goatee because it is easier to maintain over a full beard.

I like the goatee because you get the best of both worlds. You get the smoothness part as if they had no goatee in that part on their cheeks that they shave. And then you get the slightly funny, tickly feeling of a beard on the goatee part. It'd look pretty stupid though if they reversed where they let the hair grow and where they shaved. :D

Then, there are the issues of what Ducks do with their feathers. There's no better feeling than a duck with all of his feathers. ;) :D

I just can't stand the feeling of the facial hair. If I grew a beard/goatee/mustache, maybe I could get used to it, but as it stands now if I go one day without shaving, I get a noticeable shadow and it doesn't feel/look good. :( Also, Mrs, jets fan prefers the clean shaven look and she calls me "scruffy face" if I don't shave.

Didn't the recent goatee trend get jump started by Lalas the american world cup soccer team sweeper who had red hair. I think he was on the 98 team? This guy played well enough to get a job offer on a european club after the world cup was over. He also had a goatee and caused a couple of guys I know who are soccer palyers to also get goatees.

Small sample size - but with over 40% with facial hair, I'd say this group is above the norm. But of course, this is not a scientific poll.

I wish I could grow a beard - but I only need to shave every few days as it is. Once, when I was between jobs, I went without shaving for about 4 weeks. The result - it wasn't much and what there was wasn't pretty.

That is the best part of kissing a man with a goatee - the tickly feeling on the mouth. Actually, if I recall (it's been awhile since I've kissed a man with a goatee)...you hardly notice it until you get really sloppy. :o

I'm with you jets fan, I have to shave every day and would love to have McUSA's problem. Of course, if I ever want a beard or mustache I do have that option. I've got a 5-day beard right now... I was growing it just for fun, but now I'm realizing that this full beard is just too scraggly-lookin'. I had lots of weird goatees and sideburns in college, but I've pretty much been clean-shaven since starting the full-time job.

So now I've got this five day deal, and it feels like it would be a horrible shame for it to go to waste. I'm thinking of converting it into some L-shaped sideburns (think Wolverine in X-Men) and a goatee (think Brad Pitt in Fight Club).

Would this be too unprofessional? I know it's at least slightly unprofessional.... but I can't say I really care that much. :danim: On the other hand though, if this'd be something people might hugely frown upon, maybe I should steer clear? Heck, it's something I'm gonna do no matter what you all say... I guess I'm just looking for moral support. 8)

It might be the opposite, in the sense that shaving now could be disruptive to your male coworkers. Do you see anyone else developing a good growth? When men live or work together, due to various hormones released into the air that they are not even conscious of sensing themselves, men's beard-growing/shaving cycles over time end up somewhat synchronized. So wait and observe a bit, and remember, everything we do in this life leaves traces, so there is no room for capriciousness of any kind in decisionmaking.
