Just curious what you think of your marriages. With the divorce rate being so high and all, I'm curious how many 'happy and working' marriages there are.
One other thing...if you aren't too terribly happy, did things go sour before or after kids if you have them? And how long did you wait before having chilluns? What tips do you have for the youngun's of the RF?

With consequences like that, why would anyone want to get married?

I was single until my late 30's. It was a good life and I enjoyed it.
Marriage is generally more challenging, and we don't have kids. But with all its challenges, it is even better than being single. It's the sense of having a real partner, not having to face bad things alone, having someone to share good things with.
Wouldn't trade Mr. Maine-iac for anything! :D

I'm one of the non-daters (I didn't think my once-a-year vacation flings would qualify me as "currently dating"), intending to become a casual dater in the not-too-distant future.
But what is interesting is that after 29 votes there are zero divorced or divorcing ... is the actuarial profession really that much of a good thing for marriage?

It was brought to my attention about a choice not available.
For those of you who have lived with the love of your life for plenty of years to be common-law marriage or close to common-law, please consider yourself married in my book. You may place your votes in "Yes, I am reminded nearly every day how lucky I am." (if that's what you are, of course!)
Thanks!

For Pillow and the Weatherman: If you haven't started a PM correspondence yet, get with it. As a neutral third party (long time happily married), and from what I know about both of you (more than just public postings for both), it looks like a nice match.

There may be some selection bias because the title of the survey would make divorced people less likely to click the title to see what's inside. Being single, I almost didn't click on it myself.
Perhaps something along the lines of "Are you happy with your marriage or lack thereof" would bring a more balanced set of respondents.

What do you do for fun? Who do you go to nice restaurants/performances/other date stuff with? Why wouldn't you want to date?
As one of the non-daters, I'll answer.
For fun, I go out with my friends. I happen to have a lot of friends who are mostly single. The few of my friends that are couples, I do stuff with them on occassion as well.
As for nice restaurants, living in Chicago it is really easy to be out with friends and go to a "nice" restaurant. So, most of the places that I go out to eat, I'd take a someone I was casually dating. For the "date" restaurants out there, I'd need more than just a "casual" interest to spend the money going to them. (I am talking about restaurants where spending $200 and up is the norm...)
As for other "date stuff," I don't get to do it. There are worse tradgedies though. (At least I am not going to be dragged off to see the "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" :) )
It is also not a matter of not wanting to date. I'd like to find someone. I am in the unfortunate position of not knowing a lot of women, so there are no easy prospects out there. So, pretty much to date someone it has to be a complete stranger. Most of the time, those don't work, and spending time studying doesn't make it easier.
Besides the annoyance of my mother complaining that I am alone, I am very happy with my life. I have fun. I try to meet women - although not with much success. I know I won't be single forever and I'll find someone.

In addition to zero divorcees, another anomaly is the zero engagements.
Is it a phenomenon of "if you're a single actuary forget about getting married so you better get married first and then become an actuary and once you're married you have a very good chance of never divorcing because actuaries rarely divorce"?
Either that, or actuaries have very short engagements (too short to have a good chance of being captured by a survey like this).

I wish I would have gotten here sooner. I could have had a shot at Pillow or Mathlete. :(
My significant other and I have been together for about 4.5 years. We just moved into an apartment together a few weeks ago... OK, actually, I moved in. He's still a grad student (close to finishing, though - yay!), so he's got a hodgepodge of jobs this summer and the current one is 2.5 hours away, so it'll be a few weeks before the new apartment is really his home.
Once he finds a full-time job, we'll be ready to get engaged and eventually married.
I realize how fortunate I am that we are together. We certainly have our differences, but we also share a lot in common and I think we have a pretty solid relationship.

Another possibility: when actuaries divorce, they marry again quickly, which causes them to register in one of the married categories in this survey even though they were previously divorced.

It means you're going out but you haven't found anyone you'd want to spend the rest of your life with. So it's probably several people from time to time, or one person for a few weeks until they annoy you and then another person for a few weeks...

Sorry for drifting away from the direction this thread has headed, but....
For me there were some problems before kids and they exploded after kids. If anyone is interested in learning from my mistakes, here are a few of them:
1) Do NOT marry your college sweetheart immediately after college....give things a little time to make sure that what seemed like meaningless quirks in college life aren't really hints at major personality issues. Plus, give yourself a little time to live life as a single, self-supporting person before you jump into your married life. If I had it to do over I would have lived with the wifey after college....and then would have run screaming....and would probably be happier today.
2) If things aren't great either get some help or get out....the longer you sit around in a bearable but crappy relationship the more the issues are going to fester and the more likely you are to proceed to screwup #3...
3) If things aren't great do NOT have kids....use 5 or 6 types of birth control at the same time if you have to. Babies have a way of straining relationships....and they also make it infinitely harder to walk away
Yeah, I know I'm an idiot to have gotten into this mess.....at least I got a very lovable kid out of the bargain.

No, few women like to be "hit on". Women prefer to be "charmed". There is a difference.

Who says actuaries aren't normal? Currently, 25/38 (65.8%) of those respondents who are married are in the first category, considering themselves very lucky to be married nearly every day.
Per World Almanac 2001: "In a survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center of the University of Chicago in 1998, 63.5% of married people 18 or older said their marriages were 'very happy' ".
OTOH, "very lucky" may not be exactly the same as "very happy". With the personality of actuaries, maybe any of us who get married should consider ourselves very lucky.

I don't think 42 was ever all that picky! :D
Oh, right - pretty strong words coming from a hand puppet! :P
(At least I have a few rules about where I'm willing to let someone put their hands. )
42, I poke fun to show affection. If I was being mean, you'd know it...need I remind you of the wrath of elmo? ;)

Hey, you missed your chance, sluggy.
42, you don't know the half of it!

Pillow, you really gave us a nice, broad range of answers to choose from! You didn't hit mine right on the head but I felt comfortable choosing the closest! Good work, girl!!! :)
Really? What's your relationship status - married or unmarried and one of the choices being yes seems terribly confusing to me.

That's because the original question was "are you happily married", but the wording of the choices weren't change after the question was changed. That one probably should now be "I'm happily married and I realize ...".

Tee hee. Normally I run from women hairier than I am, but I think I'll break my rules for you. :P

I'm gonna go out on a limb now and guess that the "cheaters" all responded "Yes, I realize nearly every day how lucky I am." At least someone's keeping them happy. ;)

I agree with dednimnepo and what I said on page 1 of this thread is the truth. Meshuga, why would you assume that people who say that are "just fooling" themselves? I hope you're not basing that on your own experience.

Clearly, this forum does not represent a cross section of any previously identified segment of the population. :D

You can find a man and teach him the English tongue. Since he's a foreigner, he won't notice your spelling problems. :D
