Now that he has 3000 does he retire?
1) He says no
2) I would be surprised is he risks his .400 career on base percentage. If he does another 450 plate appearances and gets on base 164 times (.364) similar to 2001 he would slip to .399
3) Wouldn't 300 HR look nice (but 10 would be a long shot in just 1 season)
4) Would be very interesting if Ripkin, Gwynn & Henderson all come up for Hall of Fame at same time. He may not want the competition for 1st year entry.

He had a hard enough time trying to find a team this year to play on.
He'll have to just wait until someone desperately needs an outfielder.
There should be no problem putting three guys in on the first ballot. Sportswriters can vote for as many players to get in as they want. Certainly more than three. That will be a year when previously eligible players will have to wait another year.

What they can do and will do don't always mesh.
Many of the old timers don't like first ballot at all. I was always wondering what would happen if a really good candidate was eliminated because nobody wanted to vote 1st ballot and they failed to make 5%.
Rickey doesn't make a lot of $ anymore. Somebody would be willing to give up the rooster spot for the possible draw of his name. Plus he still gets on base.

There are enough sane and rational voters (defined as those looking at stats and other leadership characteristics and not making up arbitrary or personal rules ("I don't like him") when voting for players) to make up for the crotchety b'tards.
If two out of three are voted in, the only explanation would be, "It's his fault he retired in the same year as the others." Is this reasonable? Would anyone of sound mind still care about a ceremony based on such reasoning?

I guess what matters is what is in Rickey's head. Maybe he just wants to play.
Favorite Rickey story is when he joins Seattle he approaches John Olerud and tells him, "Hey, you know I've played with two other guys who wore helmets in the field".
Olerud then told him that was also him in Toronto & NY.
Anyone else "great" retiring on the horizon?

Mark McGwire has made some noises about retiring.

I don't know that he just wants to play. He is purely driven by stats. Although he broke the records, maybe he wants to see to it that he remains the holder of these records for a long long time.

CN: I was wondering about McGwire. I guess we'll see how healthy he can get
WW: That is what I believed also, but I can't see how much he could add to any of the numbers. Not enough to change history. & I'm sure the .400 OBP is important to him, if he even realizes it could be in jeopardy.
He also has 500 doubles. The only milestone left is 300 HR, and that would be a reach in 1 year.

By all logic, Rickey will retire. I guess it would say something about his love to play if he put his OBP at risk.

More likely is that he didn't invest his earnings wisely enough for his retirement. (Or had someone do it for him, as Kareem did.)

rickey might get into the hall. but when it comes time to appear in cooperstown for the induction ceremony his "hammy" will be bothering him.
p.s. something is wrong with an organization that would accept a j_ _ k off like rickey the malingerer henderson and turn its back on pete rose.

Now, now. It's not like Pete Rose was repeatedly caught doing drugs or beating his wife or was an accomplice to murder. He did something serious. He committed non-state sponsored gambling.
