A friend of mine is buying a nice suit for her fiance for their wedding because rented formal wear is gross. Never really thought about it. How gross is it for guys to rent formal wear? Do any of you get freaked out by this?

You never know where the groom's been.

I think that's pretty odd. It's not like it's used underwear or anything.

I rented formal wear for my wedding, as did my brother-in-law. I've been in some others where the groom did not wear a tux, never in one where he bought one.

If you move in circles where you will use it again I think it makes sense to purchase. Typical rental cost is around 1/3 of purchase price. I don't get especially creeped out by buying used clothes (garage sale) or renting an outfit but I can see where it might come into play.

After all, most clothes get tried on in the store when they are new, or even purchased and returned, so something untoward could have happened in any garment for all that.

What could really happen that a dry cleaning or normal washing wouldn't negate? I've never heard of anyone contracting something from rented or used clothes. I've needed a tux exactly twice in my life and rented both times.

I need to wear a tux a few times a year for concert performances, so I bought one that was on sale because it used to be a rental. I did dry clean it before I wore it, but I never think about the fact that it was worn by other people.

So what if it was used before? They do wash or dry clean it, and it's not like you're renting underwear.

What is faaaaaaar worse is being on a sports team where they interchangeably reuse the practise jerseys and shorts ... or even worse yet, the jock straps.

I own a couple of suits, but every time I have ever worn a tux, I've rented it. I'm with the others that said as long as it's dry cleaned, I don't see anything wrong with it. If I ever thought that I'd be wearing a tux more consistently, I might consider buying one, but that would be because I thought it would be cheaper in the long term, not because I think it's gross.

I have a tux of my own for various concerts, but for weddings and such, I usually have to rent one because they are usually trying to match all the groomsmen, not just have them all waering tuxes that are slightly different. Doesn't bother me though. I mean, it's not like I'm goin' commando in it or anything

Even if you own your tux, you may still have to rent one for a bridal party if the couple wants all their attendants to match.

Heck, if the store is clean, the rental tux should be fine.

But if you need one frequently, by all means buy one that fits well and is comfortable.
