Please post to this thread if you wish to participate in the Greatest Chess Cup Evar while we wait for Season VIII.

Please also vote for your preferred method of administration. We can do mini tables of 4 (See Chess Cup III), or it can be more of a free-for-all where you tell me how many games you want and I make pairings (randomly) (see Chess Cups 1&2), or you can write in and tell me how you want it run.

I'm leaving for the day in about 11 minutes. I'd like to get this fired up by lunch tommorrow so let's get the responses rolling. I'll definitely allow late entries so we might be starting with a smaller field than we'll end up with. This will put said individual at a distinct disadvantage in the "overall wins" category.

Hagbard Celine
01-11-2005, 04:20 PM
Also, more moves will be expected than in the Seasons (which is supposed to be at least one per business day).

I like the old rules of at least 14 moves in a 7 day period. If this condition is not met without prior approval, your opponent can ask for a forfeit victory so he/she can receive another game.

I'm going to place a maximum on the number of games you can play at one time, but I'm not sure what that will be yet (5-6 probably).

Anyone else? This is a fairly weak turnout!

Let me know how many games you'd like to play. If you don't tell me, I'll start everyone with 3. You can always request more games as we go along. The maximum number is 5 at one time. When you finish one game, you'll be given another game.

I'm just going to use the "free-for-all" method of administration. I'll randomly assign everyone to the number of games they indicated they wanted (or the default of 3). I assume some decisions will need to be made non-randomly, but I'll do my best. This is all just for fun to bridge the gap until the next Season so try not to get too bent out of shape about it! :)

I'll post the initial games sometime this afternoon...I'll edit my first post with this new information.

Ultimate Anyone?

Hagbard Celine
01-12-2005, 03:07 PM
The first round of matchups is posted. Please review your games to see if anything odd is happening. Some of you are playing the same person more than once...if this wasn't necessary, I didn't feel like spending the time figuring it out. I did glance at the list to make sure if this happened, you alternated white/black. Also, I checked to make sure no one had all white or all black in their games. Please double check this and alert me to anything that looks very odd. I can't promise I'll change it now, but I'll look out for it in the future.

First column is white, second column is black. As you finish games, let me know the outcome and I'll update the list to reflect this along with a summary of results. I'll then pair you up first come first serve style for future games.

On a side note, I wanted to play 5 but it was impossible with the way the initial numbers worked out. If anyone with less than 5 games is interested in picking up another game with me, let me know and I'll add it to the list.

Hagbard Celine
01-12-2005, 03:08 PM

You can add me.

Omnibus

Hagbard Celine
01-13-2005, 08:02 AM
I've added some games to the list in my initial post.

I had already done the matchups when Macroman and Omnibus came in, so they will play each other as Black/White and Macroman will play CR, for CR's 5th game. That'll give Macroman 3 games to start and Omnibus 2. As games start to finish, I can give you more.

Hagbard Celine
01-13-2005, 08:07 AM
Also, notice that I added a game number in front of all the games. When you report the results of a game, please indicate the game number to make it easier for me to find. Thanks!

#5 Cynical Realist defeats Anonymouse.

Are we posting the moves, or not in this format?

Interesting game - my king side gets blown apart and seems pretty hopeless, but I launch a queenside attack against his king, and Anonymouse never has time to capitialize, before his queenside crumbles.

#13 Cynical Realist Checkmates Car'a'carn.

An even game, I had a slight edge in the ending, but it was unclear how it would turn out when Car'a'carn walks into a 2-move mate.

Guess our posts crossed - wasn't trying to rub it in, I'll just take it as post count padding!

Haggy - traps my rook to win the exchange, but over the next dozen moves, he never gets a chance to take it - a very odd position - looked like a contrived chess puzzle there for awhile.

Yeah, I knew I was toast about 3-4 moves into that dozen or so moves. You had tons and tons of options and if I made a mistake, lots of bad things would happen. Bad things ended up happening anyway.

I didn't think it was a trap as much as perhaps you had a surprise attack to gain it back and then some. Turns out you did have a potent threat that might have caught others unawares, but I think my attempts to keep you at bay have been successful. No lack of respect for your game, but I love a good challenge... I'll fight the King's gambit too, take the pawn and concede the center and solidify the extra pawn - plays a bit like this game.

OK. I've been waiting a little longer the last couple of days before assigning games so I can throw more people into the random number generator at one time. Makes things a little more interesting. I'm trying to wait until there are 3 completed games before reassigning pairings. There are currently 2 completed games. Look a little later today for more pairings.

Well you did good, you avoided the first 15 pits and pratfalls I set up for you. I was beginning to think you were going to hang on to that piece the whole game. Looks like you still have a lot of chances though.

In fact I almost didn't play the rook move to chase your queen away because I didn't think you would put it on the square I wanted you to, and I was just wasting time. Guess I was wrong - thanks for the 2nd lease on life.

Question:

RSF is itching to start Season VIII. I'm assuming most of you would like to concentrate on the season and not have a ton of these Cup games going on during it (or am I wrong?). Do you want me to stop giving out games now, stop giving new games when Season VIII actually starts and then just finish your remaining games, or does no one really care?

All rook + pawn endgames are drawn...until you actually play them. I would be tempted to run that position by a computer, but those are supposedly bad judges of endgames [actually, it would be interesting to run it through multiple engines and see how it's scored].

Smak would be: I already whooped Car-man twice with White already. It seems cruel to whoop him 3 times in a row with White. I whooped him with a King Pawn opening, then I tried a Queen Pawn opening, and whooped him again. The only thing left to make it fair is to give him the first move, like that'll matter. But what the heck, at least he could claim to be theoretically ahead for the first half move of the game.

I do concede, Ramanujan won the game, I knew it wasn't checkmate when the chess software gave it to me, but I am willing to accept computer errors when they occur in my favor. ;) Afterall, I "gave" him two pieces, because I'm a nice guy, the idea of a computer "giving" me a checkmate, I thought was just returning the gift. Wow! My Win% really fell after I got my "Faux Pas" checkmate reversed on a technicality. Throw in a couple of draws, and I fell from 80% to 62%.

What's the deal with Win% - shouldn't you count the draws as a half a win? So instead of being 8/13 (62%), I'd be 9.5/13 (73%)?

Also - I kind of like the Faux Pas Checkmate rule. It seems if you could get your opponent into a Checkmate, or Faux Pas Checkmate you should win. Since we don't really understand how the computer determines a Faux Pas Checkmate - sure adds a new element to the contest! Mayb that should be the new rule - I'm sure it would really upset a few people when it happened to them!

Eh, I'm old school. Second place is the first loser and all that. A win's a win and a draw's a draw (not 1/2 a win). ;)

If it makes you feel better, you can tell yourself you have a 73% winpct. Besides, I don't really feel sorry for you since you've clinched at least a share of the Cup Championship. Congrats! ZeroVektor's the only one who could possible reach 9.5 points [edit: scratch that, ZV can only get to 9, you've clinched sole possession of the Cup], and I'm assuming you'll pull at least 1/2 point out of your two remaining games.

Also, I have 4 more games going....what if I score 1/2 out of those 4?!?!!?

I have resigned in game 35 to Hagbard Celine.

Game 33 is still in progress vs. Macroman (23 moves, though it's not looking good for me).

Game 37 vs. Aaron B is still in progress. This one got started later so is less advanced.

That was a mistake -- didn't you get my PM, Drewby?
My computer slowed down on the reload, so I ended up tabbing back one button too far and resigned rather than returning to the main menu.

I offered by PM that we should either re-play it or call it a draw, if you don't mind...?

That's fine...I posted here before I got your PM...in the past you have resigned "early" in a few games, so I thought it was legit...

Please call it a draw and let's get on with the League!!!

Game #61 resulted in a win for ZeroVektor.

I made it to a rook endgame, down just one pawn. I never had a chance because ZV had much superior pawns and position as a whole, but still a "moral victory" for HC! ;) Should I start keeping track of moral victories in the standings?

It was a good game HC.

But like you said, once I got my pawns going and the position of my K and R were pretty dominating, the game almost played itself.

I look forward to our next meeting!

I don't think #56 was ever played (Utan vs UA) - strike that from the list.

Otherwise, I lost the rest of my games, with the loss against #65 Anonymouse (again).

(Small request for next time: If we have this many people, can we try to avoid three-peats? I'm guessing Anonymouse was bored with me by the third game, although I think I was slightly improving each time....)

Sure, I'll try to keep track of that next time so 3 peats won't happen.

Thanks, Darth, but you have the edge in Season VIII game, so revenge may be yours. Give #58 to CR - and I am done with my Chess Cup games.

I did think I had a killer move with a Q check after my Rook checked you on the 8th, but realized you could block by hanging your rook. Unfortunately I couldn't take the rook, because my position would collapse. So I went for exchanging down since the endgame favored me as long as I kept your Queen tied up on your side of the board.

You think you won? How do you think you won? I usually know after a game of chess if I have won or lost. If you don't know that you won, then you must have lost. Take it like a man.
