A number of techs in Waterloo (ON, Canada), some from the U of Waterloo, have banded together to provide free wireless internet access throughout the area. Right now it's members putting up antennaes and allowing others to use their connections, but it appears they are working on a business model. (e.g. insurance execs can access their network over their laptop from the office, home, car, etc. just turn it on and you're live.)
I see this as a very exciting initiative that would allow easy internet access to everyone - particularly those that can't afford it. I'm told that others in areas like NY and Vancouver are already doing this.
