View Full Version : Investment consulting entry job: Realistic or not?

I have the feeling that investment consulting entry jobs are almost unexistant.

Am I looking for something unrealistic given the profile I have? Would I be better to look for a pension entry level job?

If I could have some advice on that, that would be nice.

Profile:

I finish my actuarial degree, Université Laval, PQ, in May.

I have courses 1,2,3,4.

I'm doing CFA 1 and SOA 6 this spring.

I did a 4 months investment consulting internship in Montreal last summer.

To have 4 (and maybe 5 SOA and 1 CFA) exams at entry level is from what I heard quite unusual. Here (Laval University), we are pushed to do as many exams we can as soon as possible.

Would that be an obstacle to enter the entry level job market in the US or English Canada?

Thank you in advance for your comments,

Sure, some US clients will certainly look at Canadians with 4+ exams and internships/co-ops.

Investment consulting entry level actuarial jobs are somewhat infrequent, yes.

Thank you for the information.

That confirmed my primary opinion.

I am nearly done with my Bachelor's in Math from UCDavis. I am also looking into the investment/finance side of actuarial work. If entry level jobs are infrequent, what is the best way to get there? Do you suggest starting with a Pension job? Other than the SOA exams, what exams are important? Does CFA help? Any advice to enter this field would be helpful...

I was specifically addressing investment consulting. If the scope is widened to include any entry level jobs that have some financial content, there are more entry level jobs that meet that criteria.
