View Full Version : Religious Affiliation

Certain people on this forum are well known for their religious affiliation, but I think the rest of us just avoid the religious threads, so I am curious as to what the mix of everybody is.
Let's try to avoid bashing any religions here (unless it's Catholics, I don't like them - just kidding! :P )
I did not leave a place for "Other". If I missed any, put a post or send me a PM and I will add it. In particular, I'm not sure how all the Christian denominations split out, so I did it based on my personal knowledge, which is far from perfect. Not sure if Orthodox or Anglican need their own - to me, they are pretty much the same as RCC, but that's probably my own ignorance showing.

Atheist, but I do follow some Zen Buddhist and Tao philosophy.

What Zen Buddhist and Tao philosophy do you follow? What do you mean by follow?

Yeah, I also follow some Zen Buddhism and Tao Philosophy: Do nothing and say nothing.

I don't follow Buddhist/Tao rituals or ceremonies. Just my personal beliefs are closer to them than Christian teachings. I also turn to the Book of Change (Confucius) as well.

That just shows the sad state of actuaries right now.

By my reckoning, it's 18-9 in favor of theists at the moment.

By my reckoning, it's 18-9 in favor of theists at the moment.
But based on empirical data collected over a number of years, I'd estimate that approximately 15 out of those 18 only go to church or practice their religion in any form whatsoever on Christmas and Easter. And, if pressed, over 50% of the "Roman Catholics" would tell you "oh, well I'm only Catholic because my parents were. I don't really practice".
Never understood either one of those phenomena - I think I lead a good moral life, but if I really thought God was looking over my shoulder 24-7, I think I'd act like a saint.
(Come on, you godless b*stards! Vote! :P)

What if you're a Jewish agnostic who practices Buddhism? And who also happens to be an ordained minister? (Okay, that's ULC, so it doesn't really count.)
Oh, and you left out neo-pagan from the options.
I need to develop some alternate names, so I can vote more than once...

I would say that you omitted - Believe in God, but not in organized religion.
(Not that I woud have chose that!)

My religious affiliation has not been established by Joss Whedon, so I have no idea what it is. I wear crosses, but that's a job requirement. OK, maybe not a requirement, but they have been known to keep me from being killed, and I put one down a vampire's throat once, and that was pretty cool. :P

Buffy appears to believe in antidisestablishmentarianism.
I've waited all my life to use that in a sentence.

I think the survey is a bit skewed. At the time I responded, 9% say they are Mormon. But in the USA, the percentage of Mormons is around 1%-2%. Then of course, I would expect a higher proportion among actuaries. :P

So which are you, a Jewish agnostic who practices Buddhism, or are you a neo-pagan? Both?
Oh, and urysohn, I agree with your empirical evidence, although you may have exaggerated a little bit (probably more like half, not 15 out of 18 ) :(
Why aren't Born Again Christian and Jehovah's Witness on the list? They are quite different than those listed.

Troy, let's call the neo-paganism a phase I went through. I was a Druid, actually. (Hi, Ducky!) Carleton was like that.
I went with Buddhism. But I'm not the only Jewish agnostic I know who practices something else entirely. Plus my understanding of Buddhism is essentially atheistic.
