I guess $2.5M was too much.

Roman Phifer, now this? Man, those dudes are cold. Cold like a fox if you catch my drift, but cold.

i like the patriots, but they seem to be pushing the envelope of the theory that we cheer for the laundry, as seinfeld said.

maybe they'll sign him back, but I figure he deserves (from NE) some cash at least on par with whatever incentives he passed on to help out on defense.

I suppose that until the brain wizards cut the wrong people and the team stinks, u give them some leaway.

Damn, not Troy Brown. He symbolized so much about this team :(

It was $5M total - $2.5M salary & $2.5M bonus.

They didn't cut him. Merely let him become a free agent. Big difference. Really, did anybody expect the Patriots to fork over that kind of cash to Troy Brown?

Troy Brown was not good on defense. He cost them the Miami game. I doubt he would want to return. There are many teams in need of a wide out and he would contribute more elsewhere.

A few years ago, I thought he was the best player on the team but it doesn't seem like he is used to his ability anymore. Is something wrong with him? Are the other wide receivers on par or better than Troy?

he's 33 wwith 12 years in the league. that slows down lots of guys.

I can agree totally that he's not worth 5M. what's he worth? I don;t know. I do respect the way he was willing to pass on incentives and money to play defense this year. maybe he can be nickel back for them at 1M?

What's "wrong" with Troy is he's a 34 y.o. possession (read: across the middle) receiver who has had injury problems the past few years (40 balls in 2003 and 17 in 2004). That's an old football body to spend $5m on, from a pure business standpoint.

I, too, feel for the guy. He seems like the posterchild for Patriots team philosophy

I'm sadened to see him go but at $5M, you have to make some decisions. It'll give opportunities for youngsters like David Givens and Bethel Johnson (if he fixes his attitude) to step up to the plate. I bet Ty Law is the next to be cut.

Oh and Brady lost the game to Miami, not Brown.

Funny, I thought that football teams all won or lost together. When I look at the standings, I only see W/L records for the "Patriots" not for "Tom Brady" or "Troy Brown". Your newspaper must have better sports coverage than mine.

I agree, big difference. Did they actually cut him? like file waiver papers (explicitly stating that they don't want him anymore)...or failed to reach an agreement on a contract before free agency started, which is not the same as being cut? Press releases aren't very clear about this.

He had an option year which the Patriots could have picked up. However, he was due a roster bonus which forced them to make the decision on the day they did or pay him more $$$$.
