To close the loop on teeth care - thought I'd ask everyone whether they bleach their teeth or not.

A couple nights a week in a bowling alley for most of my adult life has left me with "smokers teeth". I try to keep up with it using the whitening toothpaste, but I don't know how much it's helping.

Ah well, it always seems to be overlooked. But vodka is the perfect whitener. It can be taken with orange juice to make application pleasant. Vodka also can be used to remove floor wax and other hard to remove enamels.

I don't see the option for those of us who have naturally beautiful white teeth. :D

Do the crest white strips work? I was thinking my teeth could use some brightening (too much coffee!)

A dentist who was on TV talking about teeth whitening said that the Crest strip works, but not if you want a Julia Roberts smile, because it does not whiten all the way near the gums. So if you have a dainty Mona Lisa smile(I think she has?), then this would work.

There is also a new whitening method now that is done in the dental office, using light. Takes about an hour and I heard works well. Probably expensive.

I have naturally white teeth but choose to use the WhiteStrips anyway. I don't notice the "they don't whiten to the top thing" but I've heard lots of people mention it. That could be a function of the fact my teeth were already pretty white though.

I just came back from CVS and this is ridiculous. Approximately 90% of the dental products claim to whitten teeth now from toothpaste, to special gel, to strips, to mouth wash. This obviously a hot marketing word that every smart company is latching onto and exploiting to the extreme.

My question: What is your experience with all these products? Which ones work, which don't? Seems like the ingridients in the "whitening toothpaste" haven't even changed, they just now claim it whittens.

I've spoken to a couple of dental hygenists, and they say that all of the over-the-counter whitening products are about 3% as potent as the products that are found in a dentist's office, so they really don't do anything at all.

I've used the over-the-counter whitening strips and not only did they work but my dental hygenist asked me at my next appointment if I'd gone to a different dentist and had my teeth professionally whitened.

The strips are too strong for my teeth. I went through one application and I had that sensitivity-pain for days!

Since teeth are bones, they should be bone-colored, not white. Coloring your teeth bright white is as arbitrary as coloring them light-blue.

I have never really had a problem with stained teeth (but I also don't drink coffee or soda).

Enamel isn't the same as the dentin underneath.
And neither of them are the same as the bone in your jaw.

Are tooth enamel and dentin supposed to be the same color as the jawbone?

OK, there's an adjective and a noun, but no verb so I have no idea what the hell you're saying, Jack.

I have never really had a problem with stained teeth (but I also don't drink coffee or soda).Nor I, and I do drink coffee.

Or maybe I do and I've just never noticed, but it has never occurred to me that I wanted whiter teeth.

My dad has a tooth that's not quite in line with the others (it sits further in, closer to the tongue) and that one turns noticeably darker than the others. He gets it cleaned/whitened from time to time. Or maybe he gets them all cleaned, and I only notice that then they match.
