Dear new parents, family and friends,

I am being pestered by a friend to sign up for his daughter at this website:
www.upromise.com

Do any of you new daddies and mommies do this for your kids? Is there a catch? It is rude not to sign up for someone else? I don't feel comfortable putting in my credit card stuff at a lot of these sites. Please advise. Thank you.

Upromise is legitimate. I signed up on behalf of my niece and nephews. Unfortunately, the vendor that racked up the most points for me dropped out of the program, so I'm pretty much dormant now. I think the kids each got about $5 in their college fund based on Auntie Maine-iac's contributions.

None of my credit cards participate, and I'm not getting a new one just for Upromise.

if you sign up for more than one child, would that thin out the amount that each child gets from sponsoring companies?

You will get lots of spam from them.

Yes. Same amount, split X ways.

I wouldn't bother. Get a credit card that gives you airline miles and free hotel stays in Vegas.

A bunch of stuff.
UPromise is legit, and we have signed up for our kids. I would not consider pestering non-relatives to have them sign up for my kids, and while I have mentioned it to relatives, there is no way your can characterize it as "pestering". Mine are both in college now, and when they graduate, I'll probably switch over to my neice.

I would say we get pretty much zero spam because of UPromise. If you are getting some, it is because you are not careful about checking (or not checking depending on the site) the correct "don't send me email" boxes.

Sir-post-a-lot-but-know-so-little, you can sign up for the credit card of your choice with whatever points program floats your boat. Once you have that, sign up for UPromise and get some of their points too. No reason not to milk both systems.

Macavity, I would recommend you sign up and allow your money to build up in the program. (It will build at the rate of like $100 a year, so don't get excited.) Then when you have your own kids, change the name to them. I'm not even sure you have to name a particular recipient, but I am sure you can change it at any time and if you sign up on behalf of Susie Macavity to start, there is no way they will know or care.

Sounds boring.

So what credit card do you suggest to earn free Vegas Stays?
