No point, really. Jets fan told me he'd see me in the sports thread, so I thought I'd oblige :) Thankfully the Colts got pulled from the AFC East this year and the Jets stuck around. It'll make it a lot easier for the Pats to win the division :P
(Don't get me wrong - I don't think the Pats will look fantastic this year, but I think they have a good shot at the division title)

 Let all the football talk begin!
Easier because the Jets (http://espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp02/jets.html) stuck around? Have we not beaten the Pats at least once every year since 1996?

The AFC East has a race between the Jets, Pats and Dolphins, each of which have an equal chance of winning it. Buffalo can looks towards 2003 - Bledsoe or no Bledsoe.
And Urysohn, are you stating for the record that you are a Pats fan? Maybe you have stated it before and I haven't noticed, but I won't pay attention to a trash talker who doesn't specify the team that they're a fan of!

I'm a football fan and I live in New England. I like the Pats more than any other team, but I would not call myself a rabid Pats fan by any stretch. I do have the typical New England / Pats-fan hatred of the Jets, however :)

Are the Jets really going to compete for the division title?
I haven't followed all of their off-season moves (I've been too concerned with the unbelievable job that the Steelers are doing), but didn't they suffer some major OL casualties, and lose their top two CBs (are Beasley and Abraham comparable)? Who did they add?
And Vinny's not getting any younger.... I think that the Fins take the division and the Pats get a wild card...

See the link I posted above - it has the major additions and departures since last season. You're right, in the expansion draft we lost 3 starters, but we saved a lot of cap room in the process. Beasley and Abraham are more in line with the type of corners that Herman Edwards wants on his team - they fit with his philosophy. We'll be OK.
I think that the Fins take the division and the Pats get a wild card...
Are you aware that the Jets have beaten the Fins 8 times in a row? They haven't beaten us since 1997 - I'm not afraid of them. I really do think that any of those 3 teams has an equal chance of getting it done - injuries might play a big role.
Ahhh yes, the joy of living in St. Louis. Once again we don't concern ourselves with making the postseason, just how far we get into it. :D

Predictions for the AFC East...
Dolphins: Yet another year that the Fins convince themselves that Jay Fiedler is worthy of being a starting QB in the NFL. Ricky Williams has a ton of potential, but last year was the one healthy year of his career. Can't knock the receivers - Chambers should have a great year, Fiedler or not. But without the run support (after Week 3, when Ricky goes down for the season), we'll see how well they do.
Jets: Vinny starts at QB. But Pennington also plays a lot. QB controversy blooms. Receiving corps is a mixed bag - Wayne Chrebet has a typical Wayne year (not bad, not great, does good things for the team, bad things for fantasy owners). Santana Moss never develops. Laverneous Coles breaks out and ends the year as the #1 receiver on the team. Curtis Martin - well, what can you say? Martin is going to light it up. And if he has injuries, LaMont Jordan steps in and takes over - not in a "Curtis Who" sense, but with minimal loss of efficiency. So the running game will be in good shape. On the defensive side, the secondary will take a while to click, and teams will pass on them with a lot of success. They also lost one of their talented young linebackers in the expansion draft if I recall (in the unspoken "we'll take the two overpriced corners if we can have the underpriced hot prospect" deal)
Bills: A lot of potential. Drew Bledsoe and Eric Moulds will be hooking up many times this year. Fantasy-wise, Moulds is going to have a fantastic year. Bledsoe will do okay. Running game is still up in the air. Travis Henry had a great year last season, but can he do it again? I'm not a believer. The defense - did they do anything to fix that horrible mess?Things start to click for the offense by the end of the year, but Buffalo finishes with a sub-.500 record.
Patriots: Defenses will be on to Tom Brady, and he has a relatively crappy year. Too much short game and not enough of a long arm. Things will be better if rookie TE Daniel Graham develops quickly. Last year was Troy Brown's career year - he'll do well this year, but not phenomenal. Donald Hayes in not the answer at #2. Antowain Smith also had a career year. Unlike Brown, though, he will have a horrid year this go around. With Damon Huard the #2 QB, Kevin Faulk the #2, and David Patten the #3 receiver, any injuries will kill this team. Defense should remain pretty solid, although Otis Smith is starting to age a bit and probably doesn't have too many more years in him.

Chicago could be in an interesting position. The Bears are down in Champiagn this year. If the stadium doesn't sell out, they could black out games.
If the tax payers weren't paying for a new stadium, the games would have been sold out. But since the tax payers are paying, the Bears are in Champaign and we might be rewarded for our generosity by not getting to watch the games.
Makes you wonder if the NFL is taking PR lessons from the MLB?

Does anyone besides me think the Pats won't make the playoffs?
Abducens

They'll make the playoffs. 10 wins or so. They are probably the worst team the Rams could have faced in the big one. The Pats are the most underrated team since... um, the '99 Rams.
Ooh, man, I gotta disagree. I think they're way overrated. There was a lot of talk about their great defense last year, but no one seemed to notice they were the 24th-ranked defense team in the league (and 14th of 16 in the AFC). This'd be all well and good if they had a great offense to override their crappy defense, but their 19th ranked offense (9th in AFC) isn't exactly smokin'. And I just don't see Tom Brady as a big improvement over Drew Bledsoe.
Patriots: 9-7, miss playoffs. Considering the numbers, I think that's being generous.

Got to disagree. The Bears could get demolished by the Rams, but the Bears bring in ratings. It'll do fine in that respect.
It is way too early to make any assertions, but the Bears play a run-dominated ball control game. Teams that play that style of football have given the Rams trouble. So, it could be a good game.

Their offense might have problems getting on track in the short term, due to Charlie Weis's situation (http://espn.go.com/chrismortensen/s/2002/0724/1409547.html). I just found out about this today - have any of you known of this?
urysohn
07-26-2002, 12:50 PM
yeah, it's really a double whammy. Weis is temporarily out as Offensive Coordinator. But the QB coach was also still vacant (and it didn't sound like they plan to fill it this year), and Weis had been filling in there too. With a young QB like Brady, that just can't be good. Especially since Bellicheck can't spend all his time with the QBs - too many new people on offense all around. That's part of my "Brady will suck this year" reasoning.

I wouldn't take comfort in that. I was just saying MNF won't regret it even if it is a blow out, because it will have a huge national audience. I'll be throwing things at the T.V. :x
Personally, I am taking the Bears like I take the Cubs - I hope they'll suceed, but I not waiting for it. On paper, they haven't made that many changes. The core young players are a year more experienced and should be better. But, you never know. The Cubs looked better on paper and are worse on the field than last year. But, we'll get 'em next year! :D

Did someone say the Pats are overrated? How do they go from being underrated to overrated all at once? Most reports have them barely making the playoffs, and Vegas has their O/U wins at 8.5. If that is overrated, then we are in trouble...
I think after Warner's first season in STL, defenses were supposed to figure him out too. Other than Belichek, no one ever did... Maybe the Pats ferocious offense will be unstoppable again!!!
Their defense was really good, despite the rankings. Those rankings were based on yardage, and the Pats offense didn't do much to keep the other teams off the field. So in turn, the Pats defenses just faced many more plays. They did not give up many points at all last year, even in the beginning of the season. You can tell they are good by the way they played in the postseason - especially in the Super Bowl against the Greatest Show on Turf.
But still, I think that the Pats won last year by catchign lightning in a bottle - everything came together at the right time. They were really a team, and the slightest changes, like letting Bryan Cox go despite the fact that he can't play, will hurt them. This year I agree that they will be lucky to get past the first round of the playoffs.
The Dolphins will prbably win the divison, followed by the Pats, the Jets and then the Bills. I don't think the Rams defense will be as tough as last year, and the Eagles are going to win the Super Bowl this year....

I can definitely see that as a Super Bowl possibility (Steelers over Rams). But we'll see... whoever said they don't think the Rams defense will be as good this year, I agree with that. But hopefully it'll still be good enough to make them at least 12-4.

What did everyone think of Spurrier's debut in Osaka? They did crush the Niners, but all of their points came after San Fran pulled their starters out of the game. Do you think Spurrier will rock the house this year and the Osaka game is evidence of it, or is this just pre-season, and this game gives no real information?

I think it was very important mentally for the Skins to go out and (a) get a big win and (b) get 3 - 4 passing touchdowns.
But other than making them feel better about themselves (which they shouldn't), it's pretty meaningless.
Han Solo
08-05-2002, 12:05 PM
As much as I enjoyed it :D, it really was only meaningful as a confidence builder. They now have something to build on, even if it was against the 49er backups. There were only a couple meaningful tidbits (to me, anyway)
1) Sage Rosenfels will not be the starting QB - it will be Wuerffel or Shane Matthews (who didn't play). Rosenfels looked tentative at first in the Spurrier offense, Wuerffel obviously knows the system better and is more confident in it.
2) The Redskins rushed 21 times and passed 45. I know that is the main thing they were testing, but still, Stephen Davis may not have as big of a year as he is used to.
3) Redskins defense has a lot of promise.

I am right here, my adoring fans. I have been resting in my oxegenated chamber, where I hibernate inhaling air stored in canisters in Pittsburgh in 1975. Sure, it's a little brown and sooty. Though that might be only because of my gas problem and lack of chamber ventilation. In any case, it keeps my mind fresh and helps me focus on my in-depth football analysis.
The Bears fan is correct. The Rams are soft up the middle. In fact, they are soft everywhere. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. I heard they are changing their unis again this year to surplus big old fluffy pillowcases from the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton. Friggin pansy passing attack. God I want to wring Mike Martz's neck myself. I just want to remind everyone that I called the Pats upset. Sure I pick against the Rams every week but I'm still a genius.
What was I talking about? Oh yes, the Rams go$$amn wussiness. James Allen should really be able to pound and rough up the Rams' linebackers. Allen is a strong, powerful runner and the Bears can eat up the clock and wear out the Rams with his style.
Excuse me a moment, I have just been notified that Allen is a Texan and the Bears are utilizing Anthony Thomas. In that case, I should alter my analysis. Thomas is head-down, pounding runner. The Bears should be able to control time of possession and keep the Rams wussy offense off the field. The Bears run a strong, ball-control offense with Thomas and the Rams are too damn soft to deal with it.
I will be here all season for my expert analysis. Be sure to knock on my chamber as it might be too filled with the wonderful transplanted Pittsburgh air for me to see anyone. Thank you.

What never gets old? Are you smarting off to me? Listen here, Captain America. I played football for several years. I was hit in the head a lot. I mean a lot. I know football. To win you need ball control. All you lily-livered fancy boys out there just better get it.
Now, let's look at the Jets-Steelers game. Two head-down, pounding runners face off in Martin and Bettis. And all the Bettis-clone Steelers backups. Oh my God, I will need to run to Eckerd for a box of kleenex before this one. Look for both teams to use their runners to control the time of possession and dominate with their tough defenses. Are you listening you fancy boy Martz? T-O-U-G-H. Unlike your little pretty boys. I'm surprised you haven't signed RuPaul to block for your snivelling little turds.
Anyway, both teams will control time of possession and pound each other so much that the game will be called after the 3rd quarter, 0-0. Two weary valiant teams will meet at midfield for attaboys and then head back to my place for Iron City Beers. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Captain America, you are clearly on crack. I will be calling the TIPS hotline on you if you don't get some football knowledge, stat. The Jets and Steelers will be going for it on the inevitable numerous 4th downs that will occur. Let the froo-froo teams like the Rams worry about using a kicker or punter. They just use up valuable roster space for pounding, ball control backs, the kind like I was in my illustrious career.
Because the NFL supports fancy-pants kicking units, it's unavoidable to have a kickoff. That's OK. Just send Jerome Bettis back there. He'll put his head down, and use his grinding, pounding style to kick that ball through the opposite uprights for a touchback. Is there anything Bettis cannot do? I think not.
After that, the Jets and Steelers will remain perched around the 20, pounding away at each other for 30 minutes. Hmm. It appears I should have picked up kleenex earlier. Sorry about that. Anyway, the second half will go the same way, at least till the game is called. I need to visit the men's room now.

Yeah, I thought Vinny looked pretty sharp when he was in there - he seemed to be going to Coles a lot. I just hope his thumb is permanently healed by the opener. Chrebet and Martin were non-factors - Herm already knwos what they can do. Lamont Jordan got his share of touches - he did OK. Our defense gave up a couple of big plays, but I did like the goal line stand that they put up against the Bus. Like you said, this is only pre-season and I'm not going to read too far into it. In 1992, the Jets went 5-0 in the pre-season, and they went 4-12 in the regular season - oh those Browning Naigle days!!!
The thing I'm most concerned about is getting everybody healthy by September 8th - Cowart, Mawae, Vinny, John Abraham, etc. We should rest them for the entire pre-season if it means they're ready to go in Week 1!!! Next stop - at Baltimore on the 15th!!!

I love the Steelers fans. They provide the offseason stupidity now that Cowboys fans are finally quiet.
Tell you what, let's revisit this in November when the Steelers are marked as this year's 'Whatever happen to...' team."
I feel pretty good about my prediction after watching the first stringers last night.

Hi everyone. I know you are waiting for my recap. Patience is a virtue. Just like my grind-it-out style when I was a football player and hit on the head lots of times, I have a grind-it-out, word-processor-control style on my recaps. I can really pound the keys.
Now, last night's game went as I expected except for the 22 points that were scored. I did not understand the 5 field goals, however. Probably each team's runners were so worn out after such pounding, physical performances by the defenses that the coach thought better of it to wear them out in preseason.
By the way, speaking of coaching, what guts by Bill Cowher to call for a review of that fumbled catch with 0:17 left in the half. You only get so many challenges and Coach Cowher wanted to send a mesage to his team that he supports them. Great challenge, coach. Joe Theismann said as much during the broadcast. What a genius commentator he is. You don't see such pounding performances from QBs often. Mike Patrick and Paul Maguire were silenced in awe for the next 15 seconds of the broadcast of his genius.
What a performance by the Jets defense. All 11 men on that defense on that goal line stand have my 1/11th vote for MVP this year. How anyone can stop The Bus is beyond me. They must all be Supermen. That is hands down the most dominant defensive performance I ever seen.

Bah! One of the many troubles with the Jets is that they can't play in the REGULAR season, when it counts. Last year they got spanked at Pittsburgh, then got their butts pounded on by the mighty Bills! Remember that, jets fan? Bwah ha ha ha ha!!!!!!

I noticed you didn't mention the game in week 4 where we beat your a$$es and scored 42 points! I will admit that our offense was not the most impressive in the NFL last year, so when we scored 42 points, you have to know that the other team (i.e. the Bills) must be pretty pathetic!!!

Other than the special teams, the Steelers looked fine, but they need to fix the special teams.... it would be a lie if I said I was concerned about being down after two series in a meaningless football game, so I won't say it.... I WILL be concerned if they run the Bus three times in a row in that situation in the regular season.... there's no reason to give away your goal line offense in the preseason....
Keep that post handy, we can revisit it again in November....

Unless they changed the rules, the only reviews in the last 2 minutes of the half came from upstairs.

That's funny, I didn't see you make this pick in the "King of the Hill" thread.
You better hope that pre-season doesn't mean anything, because that's Buffalo at 0-4, and the Jets at 4-0.

I see your avatar is a photograph of a Jets Fan watching his team on Sunday. (kidding, cute kid).
Hey JF, preseason doesn't mean squat. The 4 years that the Bills won the Super Bowl, they won a total of 2 preseason games.
GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure that's a typo and all, but it's a painful one to those of us who were rooting for them through all four of those non-title seasons.

Funny, I seem to remember Norwood's kick going right down the middle to give the Bills a 22-20 victory over the Giants in the waning seconds. After that they stomped on the Skins, then the Cowboys 2 years in a row. Don't ya remember? DON'T YA REMEMBER?! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Go Bills!!!!!!

If you're saying that Chad Morton was not the game's MVP yesterday, you either didn't see the game, or you are blind.
BTW, who is your team?

1. I didn't watch the game. My choices were limited to garbage, garbage and playing outside with the kids. Even a good game wasn't going to keep me inside.
B. Relying on 2 KO returns to beat a team like Buffalo doesn't bode well for the Jest (and they damn near cost me money).
iii. I thought you were already nominating him to be your season MVP. With Vinny at QB though, he may need to be your MVP.
I don't have a team. Nearest thing I have is anyone playing Baltimore. And since my wish that Modell would die without a Lombardi Trophy has been crushed, I can just hope he dies penniless. -- bitter former NFL fan

"Relying on" is an interesting choice of words. Vinny - 24 of 30, 2 TDs and no INTs. Jets +2 in turnover department, had 4 sacks. And if a team like Buffalo chooses to play as if Special Teams are not an equal third of the game, why should we not plan on taking advantage of that?

FYI, Modell's team won the 1964 NFL Championship.

While this is true, I would suggest this had more to do with the team Paul Brown built than the one Modell bought (plus it was before my time.) For many in Cleveland the death of the Browns began with the firing of Brown. For me it started when he cut Ernest Byner, and was over before Beli-chump was ever hired.

The Jets really are sucking. This is two consecutive games where they are being absolutely dominated on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Special teams saved them in week 1, but by all rights they should be 0-2 now instead of 1-1.
I also think the management team should lobby to have all future games be road games, because the Jets give a new type of meaning to "home field advantage".
