I opened 1:dm: and Edmund overcalls 2:sp:. Partner bids 3:sp: showing a big hand, and presumably diamond support as well. Only presumably, because my hand is:
:sp: AK
:ht: xx
:dm: AKQTxxx
:cl: xx
Partner has no idea my hand has so many tricks, and with spade controls we are definitely thinking slam. I bid 4NT and partner shows one ace with 5:cl:. RHO btdt chimes in with a lead-directing X.
Clearly I have a problem, I'm expecting Edmund to lead toward a holding of :cl:AQ or :cl:AK. I retreat to 5:dm:. Partner comes to the rescue with a 5:ht: bid! I ponder this: partner still hasn't shown me what is so great about his hand, and 5:ht: has to be more than a simple cue bid because it doesn't solve my problem. He must have a self-sufficient suit like my own.
I bid on to 6:ht:, and am thrilled to find partner with:
:sp: Q
:ht: AKQJxxx
:dm: xx
:cl: Kxx
Problem solved! btdt led a spade and we had 13 tricks.
btdt & Edmund ending up winning by 9 IMPs over 29 boards. Wish I hadn't doubled that 4:cl: contract near the end, we were actually still up at that point after all the results had been tallied!
