View Full Version : Michael Jordan

Today looks like the day he will announce his return. Obviously this increases the value of his investment in the Wizards (although he is technically absolved of it....yeah right!!!) as the number of national TV appearances of the Wizards goes from like 3 to 63.

But he says its about the love of the game.

I don't see Jordan playing for financial reasons. Perhaps it's love of the game, or ego, or getting his name in the news, or the opportunity to school Kobe on old wheels. Who knows??? But I seriously doubt that money is more than a convenient potential side benefit.

If you think that MJ will be schooling Kobe in anything then you are an optimist. I'd love to see it, but I believe it is highly unlikely.

MJ was being schooled by many this summer. His physical ability is just diminished. Though he is as mentally tough if not more, it wont matter if they don't make the playoffs.

I don't think he'll do it, but he may want the opportunity. And he's still good enough to get the best of anyone in the league from time to time.

Granted, Kobe would get the best of Jordan a lot more often. A lot more often.

On a tangent - many feel MJ should leave it alone rather than tarnish his image/career. I for one think that if he can play in the league and enjoy it and contribute, no one's going to think less of his accomplishments.

Look at Robert Parrish - he played until he was, what, 54? Sure, he rode a lot of pine. But I bet he had fun. And if anything, it kept the memory of his accomplishments fresher, as commentators would remind us from time to time.

Anyone notice the timing of the alledged leak of the "MJ is back" coversation? Coincidentally a weekend before ticket sales. Further proof that Commissioner Stern is using MJ as a commodity to advance the NBA. It is a conspiracy and I will have no part in contributing to this theater. There have been some theatrics in baseball but hopefully they have been incidental.

The shame will be when he's not cut from the squad. Not that he'll have much competition on the Wizards.
The shame was that he was hired for a position in the Wizards organization without any experience. And now it appears that his aging athletic skills are more valuable than his non-existent executive skills. That's gotta hurt. No worse than his acting skills, though.

There will be no shame if he is not cut by the Wizards. As bad as some may say he is, he will still be the best player on the team. And remember he paid a lot of money for that executive job. If you can't hire yourself, why own the team.

I can't understand parts of your message, 321.
"He paid a lot of money for that executive job"? What?

Secondly, if he's the best player on the team, I'm guessing he retires before Christmas. Too much frustration in losing. He'd have to make a boatload, or be able to bring in some All-NBA help who want to play with him for a low price.

"No worse than his acting skills, though."

LOL. Remember the episode of SNL he hosted? I think he played in the skits:
A basketball player
Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan
Another basketball player.

But of course, there was
"Mr. Jordan, do you ever get that not-so-fresh feeling?"

The thing with MJ's game that concerns me is his reliance on physical ability, namely his ability to jump, and to a little lesser extent on his quick first step (which tends to come from one's jumping ability). (Unlike, for example Magic Johnson.) Every time I see him it looks like he has put on a few more pounds. Ever try moving around (running or jumping) with one of those weight vests. You really do feel like moving in slow motion. I just hope he does not get hurt. But, hey, wasn’t he practicing and holding his own with the Wizards? Anyone know how much heavier he is from his last retirement?

As a life-long Laker fan, I can remember all too painfully the times when Magic Johnson tried to comeback years after his first retirement. Every time he tried to cut through the middle, the opponents stripped the ball out of his hand (like stealing candy from a baby).

I also remember Kareem playing a couple years past his prime. Very pathetic.

I think Jordan will make a decent showing, but expect Kobe to run circles around the old man and send him into the locker room bawling like a baby (assuming he doesn't bruise his ribs before the game warming up).

He bought a share of the team and became an executive for the team. I imagine some other team probably would have hired him, but the job with the wizards was because he was an owner.

Hey Bill
Kobe is over-rated!
They needed a new MJ and the media hyped him up. He is too soft, and way too flashy. Sure he is got some cool tricks. But cool tricks don’t win many games.
Now I think of it, I don't remember a playoff game that Laker won only because of Kobe. I do recall that Laker lost many playoff games because of Kobe's itchy-trigger-fingers beyond the Arc. Laker is Shaq-Daddy's team, period. not Kobe's.

OTOH, I won't mind seeing MJ embarrassed by the new comers. In fact, it already happened before MJ retired for the 2nd time. Iverson broke MJ's knee with a double x-over during his rookie year. I also like to see what Vince and Kobe will do to him. But I suspect we will not see much of it on the news because it is in NBA’s best interest not to blemish MJ’s image

You better believe that it will be well publicized when MJ gets schooled by Kobe, T-Mac, AI, VC, et al.

MJ knows that. He is willing to take the risk. He is already hedging peoples expectations.

Hockey, shmockey.

You should have said, "This is way too much discussion for someone who will be about the 10th best player in the league."

I'll stick with, "hockey, shmockey."

He may be schooled by these guys on a few plays, but if you have him as the 10th best player in the league, I think you are seriuosly underrating him.

As a Knick fan, I learned my lesson to many times not to underestimate MJ. I know he is far removed from his single handed dominance over the Knicks, but just what he brings in terms of his leadership and experience is more than anything that Kobe, VC, T-Mac, and Marbury can bring.

His presence will be felt in the NBA.

Bill...,

I was surprise how awesome a power forward Magic was. It's true that his ball handling skills were diminished, but he was still All-Star caliber.

For all you Kobe bashers:

Keep in mind that he has a long way to go before he's done and he gets better every year.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the McGrady and Hill show.

But there is nothing better than the 17th year in a row of Stockton-to-Malone.

John even signed for 2 years.

Will Jordan be a Gretzky or Mario Lemieux comeback?

Gretzky's last year was by far his worst in his career, and it was obvious he was ready to quit. He didn't come back, he's not coming back.

Mario scored in his last game or shift before he quit. When he came back, he scored in his first shift. (He also scored in his first shift as an NHL rookie.) Mario made a credible comeback. (Mario is the superior athlete compared to Gretzky, even though no one in any sport even remotely compares to Gretzky in dominating the scoring and statistics.)

I think Jordan looked pretty good when he quit, and will play pretty well when he comes back. Will he have everything he used to have, 100% of the time? Maybe not. But, I would guess he will have most of it, most of the time. For Jordan, "most of it, most of the time" will easily put him in the 95th percentile of the NBA. He belongs until proven otherwise.

Other comparisons might include Gordie Howe, Nolan Ryan, and Ken Griffey Jr. for players who excelled long after the usual retirement ages in their sports.

The most interesting thing I've seen on Jordan's return was a theory that assuming Jordan returns to play at a fairly high level, he will be traded to a contender mid-season, along with a high-salary cap player from the Wizards (I forget who).

This makes sense on so many levels:

Jordan gets to play for another ring or two (possibly with Phil Jackson & the Lakers??)

The Wizards get a few young, talented players in return to build the next NBA dynasty.

The Wizards also get cap relief.

Jordan's "paltry" $1 million salary makes it easy for many teams to afford him.

Jordan wins, the Wizards win, whatever team trades for Jordan wins.... and the rest of the NBA and the fans lose....

CJL

Interesting thought. Seems Jordan would be leaving himself open to the possibility of being traded to a team he doesn't want to play for. Also, the other team would have to be able to absorb the other high-cap player, too.

I don't see the Lakers in it though - what do they gain? Insurance for potential Kobe injuries?

Thought for the day: If Philly picked up Jordan without any significant losses, would they be able to win a title?

"The rest of the NBA and fans lose" - No.

The NBA is highly stratified, and there are only ever a handful of teams that have a chance of winning the championship. Last place teams have the most pathetic winning percentages in sports - since basketball is a high scoring sport, the better team generally has a very high probability of winning.

As a result, the fans in the second tier cities actually win if Jordan comes back, since they get a chance to see a legend in action. This is an exciting prospect even if Jordan is not at 100% of his former ability.

Since the fans will come to see Jordan, the other teams will enjoy some increased ticket sales as well. TV revenues will go up as well.

Finally, if Jordan does come back at more or less full strength, that will provide an incentive for every one else in the league to play just a little bit harder - and every fan everywhere will benefit from that.

Iverson and Jordan would be an incredible combination that could conceivably dominate the NBA if they could make it work together, but .......

AI would have to be willing to share the ball and the spotlight with MJ. While I'm a huge fan of Allen, I don't know that he is or ever will be willing to do that. I suspect that all of Iverson's talk about doing what it takes to win stops when it comes to sharing the leading role.

I think he/she actually meant one of those cloth training vests where you can insert slabs of steel/lead to weigh you down to give you a better workout.
