I have a picture that I want to upload, but I got a message saying something about the maximum size of an avatar. Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

You should be able to reduce the size in Microsoft Photo Editor. If that doesn't work, contact glenn for help.

Last time I posted before today (a LONG time ago), I thought my avatar was a lot smaller than it is now. I don't have photo editor to shrink it down to 80x80, so can you help me out, Glenn?

I'll help you, too, but I'll need your SSN, DOB, major credit card #, and the name of your date to the senior prom. Trust me, it's very technical.

I am having the exact same problem. The same warnings show up for me too.
My measurements are 34-26-32
My turnons are long walks on the beach and romantic movies.
My turnoffs are dishonest people and slugs.

Nope. I don't look like that guy, I look like I ate that guy.
I think Scorp posted the image, some geek holding a sign that says "I'm a bandwidth stealing scumbag". I figure if the shoe fits.....

It was a website using {insert proper program here} that allowed you to put whatever onto the sign. The person running the site got p.o.'d about us linking to it and switched them all to that sentence. :swear:

HAHAHAHAAHAHAAAAA!!!! That explains why, when I sent that link to a friend with a link saying "Hi, Suzie!", she wrote back "what the hell are you talking about? what was that supposed to be?" :D  :D

Really? If you don't want people to link to your images, you shouldn't place them on a public network. Besides, they were linking in posts, something I would have considered acceptable. My avatar is not linked to the site, I transferred a copy to our server.

Each one we did was a live link rather than a stored image. Whatever the program/applet/whatever (pardon my computer ignorance here! :) ), it must have been taxing on their end.

Yes, it was actually a program that generated the image with the text on the sign everytime it ran. Kind of neat. But you're correct, everytime someone viewed a page on this forum, their server would have had to run the program to generate the image.
I don't think we make the 'bandwidth stealing scumbag' criteria though. Linking avatars is impolite (which is why I didn't do it), but posting a link within the text of a message on a forum? Maybe I'm not up on my netiquette....
There's a two second apache tweak that prevents linking, if the owner is that crusty about it. Failing that, a request on the web page not to link does wonders (I didn't see one). Failing that, a quick email to the offending webmaster (me) would have gone a long way.
I thought the message on the screen was deliberately part of the script. I didn't realize it was targetted at us because someone (OMG!) linked to their site
 .

 .I can't imagine that we were the only ones linking to it. The owner probably did it to everyone who had linked it.

Speaking of avatars, does anybody have a nice pic of Lisa Kudrow that I could use for my avatar?

Plus, now I'm endangered, so if anybody messes with me I can get the feds on their case.

You took that pic yourself?! It looks fake, almost. I thought it was a drawing this whole time. Maybe because it's been shrunk down so much?

Gee, thanks. :P
It's a little overexposed, so I had to work it a little extra in post processing. That and the size thing, probably. I have the whole picture it came from posted here (http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pseudolus2001/vwp2?.tok=bc6vKSQBZBIyYSBe&.dir=/Breachway+New&.dnm=20+pipl+grass+dust+Adj+Wallpaper.jpg&.src=bc). I think this other picture (http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/pseudolus2001/vwp2?.tok=bc6vKSQBzo9dR1gw&.dir=/Breachway+New&.dnm=17+plover+action+rot+dust+adj+Wallpaper.jpg&.src=bc) came out better, but it doesn't work as well for an avatar.
(I think I linked those correctly. Let me know if they don't work.)

I didn't mean to dis your picture! :P
It's actually a very cool picture when you look at it full-size with the appropriate context. I also liked the second pic, but agree that the first makes a better avatar.
What kind of heat are you packing?

Nothing too fancy: Canon Rebel with Sigma 80-300 zoom and 1.4x teleconverter. I think this roll was Provia film. That plus lying very still face down in a saltmarsh can result in some decent piping plover pictures (plus some blackfly bites).

Cool. I bought my wife the Canon Rebel 2000 for her birthday last year. All we have right now is the standard 35-80 lens, but I think I'm gonna get her an 80-300 lens for Christmas.
She's the artistic one and I think she could be a decent photographer, at least if she quit it with the "posed" pictures. The ones where she gets everyone together and says "smile." I hate those pictures, how many pictures do we need of her family sitting there with goofy grins! Pictures of people when they don't know you're taking it are much more interesting, IMHO.

When you look at 80-300 lenses, consider finding one with a "macro" setting. That will let you focus on objects much closer to the lens and allow you to take closeup pictures of flowers and such. Many of the zooms will have this feature, and it's a lot easier than messing around with special accessories to accomplish the same thing.

Glenn -
I tested a new avatar and now I can't put my old one back. I get an error message saying it's too big pixelwise - even though it was acceptable mere minutes before. Guess I shouldn't have messed with it.

Got an avatar related question. Anyone know how I can shrink an animated gif? The poor guy is 84*84 pixels and I don't have means to shrink it and keep it animated. A downloadable editor would be perfect!
Thanks!
