I am going to be a senior in college. My school does not offer statistics or corporate finance. I have taken both micro and macro but the courses are not approved for VEE yet.
I was wondering if I could do a statistics independent study with a professor and have him write up a syllabus to get approved. Do you think that this could get approved?
What are the chances that my micro and macro classes would be approved? Is the approval process difficult?

approved institutions are on some list on the soa website. about the independent study thing - they'd probably just tell you to take the CAS exam, but if you want its worth a shot. good luck

you could use a text recommended by the society. that and copying the syllabus they require would go long way.
shouldn;t be too hard to get approved, unless the instructor is your uncle or has the same last name.

So long as they were reasonable courses, I'd think it would be likely that your micro/macro courses will be approved.
As for the independent study, I'd suggest that you contact the ombudsperson and discuss with them.
One thing that would be guaranteed to work is to do the NEAS courses with your professor supervising your work. Then you'd definitely get the VEE credit (once you pass two exams anyway) and if your professor/stats department agree to it, you could also get some college credits that way.

NEAS is the way to go on these. Easier than college classes.

Does anyone know where I can find the NEAS website for statistics? I have had a hard time finding it.
THANKS!

The website for all NEAS VEE Courses can be found at www.neas-seminars.com I have taken both regression and time series through them. They don't give any feedback, however the final exams have been extremely fair in comparison to SOA exams. I think it is definately the easiest route to go if you can learn by reading texts and doing problems.

The person at the SoA that would be deciding if your independent study could count for credit. They're the person to ask all your questions about unusual exam scenarios (Would I get credit for X? If I do Y will that satisfy pre-requisite requirements? that type of thing)
The email is ombudsperson@soa.org
