A very interesting, thought-provoking article.

Although, I wonder what the author would have said if it had been two gay young men instead of two young mormons. I suspect he would be less concerned.

The point is, hatred exists in many forms. Some are hated for their religion. Some use religion as a tool of hatred.

and some hate for different reasons, but use religion or the difference to fan the hatred of others to gain puppets and supporters.

btw, I believe it is more cowardly to die for a cause than to live and face the consequences.

It's no more or less evil, but we pick our battles.

It would be more surprising if Orson Scott Card wrote a poorly-written essay. I have some of his books.

But I think some of this writing is simplistic.

For instance: How does one "win the war against hate?" I don't think Mr. Card has any more of a realistic clue than does anyone else.

Likewise, and I quote here: We're casting the stones. Even retroactively, shouldn't we make some effort to be without the sin? I think that many of us make a lot of effort to be without the sin.

...perhaps the teachers of hate ... could keep in mind that, having set the fire, they are responsible for ALL (emphasis added) the damage the fire might cause.

Perhaps "all" is a bit of an overstatement. From experience, it is easy to accept teachings uncritically, yet what of the student of hate? Has he no responsibility?

Assuming he would be less concerned, so what?

Those who think Orson Scott Card would be less concerned if the target of the note had been homosexual obviously never read his book Songmoster.
