What is the best way to invest USD13,000 with no risk of losing the money. Money belongs to a college student with no student loans.
Thank you for your advice

ING savings account. They're paying 3%. Emigrant just raised theirs to 3.5%. Both on-line.
If someone refers you to ING, they get $10 and you get $25. Here's a thread for getting a referral. http://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81931&hl=ing+referral
I'd be tempted to invest maybe $1-2,000 in a mutual fund (depending on the time horizon) but if the return absolutely has to be positive, either of the above accounts would be better.

The only investments with no risk to principal are banking products (savings accounts or certificates of deposit) or money market funds.* A tax-free money market fund is likely to produce the highest yield if you live in a state with a moderate to high state income tax.
* Technically there is a very small risk to principal in a money market mutual fund, but it is so small that it is considered to be 0.

OP asked for no risk of losing money. At the money puts aren't free, so your suggestion won't work.

there is no risk with either one of those securities, as they are going to increase in value....I know things

your choices are good ones but they might be a bit risky for the original poster...I'd go with something safe like MOT, GOOG, or SHLD!

Invest in TIPS (treasury inflation protected securities I thinK) maturing at the date you need the money.
they have the least amount of risk of losing money (ie US government would need to default) and they provide inflation protection (though college tuitiion certainly seems to increase faster than the normal inflation)
