I will be out for awhile. (This is the third time attempting to take this exam.) I should be back in November. But remember that I'll be thinking about chess and you guys while I'm working out some reserves and memorizing useless footnotes on accounting issues.

I'm only going to be inconsistently available for the next 2.5 weeks, so won't be able to keep up my usual 1 or more moves per working day unti lthat point. Hope it doesn't overly inconvenience my opponents that their thrashing will be slightly elongated. If so, go ahead and disqualify me for the round.

I don't think there was anything to prevent a neverending cycle of Rb2-b1+ Re2-e1 Rb1-b2 Re1-e2 moves. I couldn't very well let you play Rb2-f2+ in which case I'd have been slaughtered. I probably should've given up a rook for the bishop and pawn at some point earlier, but oh well. Considering I was down 2 pawns at one point, getting a draw ain't so bad.

Good game ramanujan. You did suprise me with the openning, I do not think I've found a way to play successfully against 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 your usual opening, but I am not complaining :) . I think you should've played 21... Ba7 after 22.Ra1 Ra8 23. Bc2 Bxf2+ you would have 2 rooks for the queen and at least a draw.

I did not play good in this game. I think I came ahead in the opening, just before I gave up the pawn. After that I played one weak move after another, including my 21st move. On the other hand, you played an excellent game and gave me a well deserved defeat.

BTW, I don't know which opening you are calling my "usual opening", this seems like slav which I rarely play. More ususal for me would be Pirc/Robatsch.

Yes, I made a blatantly obvious blunder which I noticed as soon as a let go of the mouse. I moved very hastily yesterday morning, without even looking at the position (again a victim of my own bad habits, namely that I'm so used to playing speed chess). My only consolation is that I know I would have blundered in the endgame anyway...

Though there was a request to undo that I granted. I guess the undo doesn't apply to resigning. No, the resignation wasn't accidental. I made a bonehead move, realized it 5 seconds later, and hit 'Request Undo'. I then remembered that we're only supposed to use that request in the case of a mouse glitch, and noticed I had nothing left to work with, so I resigned.

Nice game, thtevie... I'm looking forward to our inevitable rematch! :)

Anyone else notice AllClear is moving painfully slowly? Skipping Mondays and Firdays AllTogether? That's my gripe for today, enjoy.

I missed Friday (away on vacation)- I believe the only business day I missed a move in weeks.... I made a move today lunch time as always. Darth Tater keeps heckling me about my move speed. That's my gripe for today. :-)

Good game Darth.

For most of the game I thought, I was trying to get a draw. 41... Bf3 was a terrible move, after 41... Kxf4 or 41... Ke6 it should've ended in a draw.

I probably need to rethink what opening I play against you  .

Sorry guys, I've been unable to make many moves lately. I'm happy to play the games out with any of you, but I'll also be willing to forfeit any games for purposes of league play. I clearly haven't been making one move a day.

I've had enough...I'll take the win...

I had black in this game -- not gonna play the f5 line anymore...

Good game, Car'acarn. I thought I could simplify and force a pawn home...I saw too late that I was wrong. After that, it looked like a drawn game and I didn't think I could mess it up. I did. :P

I thought Darth had good attacking chances in the early middle game since my king was in the middle but I was somehow able to hold on. Later, another exchange sacrifice by Darth forced me to go on defence. Once I countered all the threats, I just had too much material advantage and it was only a question of time.

Thanks ramanujan. It was a good game. I think I really had some good attacking chances until about move 27. I think I should have played Qa4 instead and I could have held some of the center...after that, I knew I was gonna go down barring any gross blunder on your part. Well played.

Darth Tater defeats AllClear. I caught him in an opening trap on move 6. I think maybe 9...Ng3+ is better and I think 10...Bf5 was totally wrong. After 12 Be3, I think the party was pretty much over. It was good to play it out a bit futher, I guess.

No reply from Aaron yet; my game is stuck in a holding pattern.

Edited to note that Aaron has responded and the pace is picking up. It's making for an interesting endgame. We each have a rook and two pawns. He has a bishop as well, but one of my pawns is on a7. His bishop is sitting at a8 for the moment.

I think Gene had the upper hand in the opening/ early middle game. But once I had my development problems sorted, I was able to induce weakness on white's queenside and after some interesting battle won a piece. However, with only a few pawns remaining on the board and lack of accurate play, I think I was lucky to win in the end. Good game, Gene.

I don't remember ever feeling like I had the upper hand in this one. As we neared the end, I was thinking this would be a draw, but I knew it was lost after your knight check on move 52 (forcing me to trade knights with you). I probably should have resigned sooner but I wanted to make you earn this one. That knight check was an excellent move and I don't know why I overlooked that. Even before that I probably would have been willing to sac my knight for your pawn if possible, leaving you with K-B-N vs K, which is enough mating material for you, but an extremely difficult mate to achieve.
Thanks for the great game.

A little off the subject, but has anyone ever been in a K-B-N vs. K situation, either in OTB or correspondence (e.g. AOCL)? Was the mate achieved? I would struggle to find the mate in OTB play, but I could do it in correspondence play.

I know that a king and two knights cannot achieve mate. I can visualize a K-B-N mate where the opposing king sits on a corner square, but I can't visualize how I would force him into that corner. It's very difficult to "herd" a king without a rook or queen.

With K-B-N vs K, the opposing king must be pushed toward a corner square of the same color as the bishop. There are some very tricky maneuvers involved in forcing the opponents king out of the center and to the desired corner, but mate can be forced. With K-B-B vs K, it is relatively easy to force mate. With K-N-N vs K, mate cannot be forced (but I believe it can be achieved if the opponent plays inaccurately).

No, I don't think it's even theoretically possible. I recall a game on chessclub.com that was automatically ruled a draw as soon as that situation occurred (can't remember which side I was on). "Draw due to lack of mating material" or something like that -- exactly the same thing that happens if you get down to K vs. K.

I defeated All Clear. In a bishop+rook ending I menaged to sneak my king, through his defences, and collect several pawns. Good game AC.

I was white.

I'm going ot cancel (resign, though I haven't moved once) to Drewby and decline Tider, 169 and UA for now. It's getting too close to my exam and I am having trouble concentrating. My exam is on 11/3 and I would like to resume after the exam. I hope I won't get losses for these games, but will understand if I must.

There was a good chance I would have resigned to WW if my exam wasn't for another two years, too. :D

I resigned to ramanujam in Season 11 in a game that saw no peices taken off the board until we both had gone 30 moves in. I wonder if someone can do a search of master level games, and let me know if that has ever happened before.

30 moves! never realized that! I don't think that I have played a game like that before. I will replay the game today and see how it actually hapenned. I don't remember a lot of specifics about the game, we have been playing it for ages. Hope our season 12 game goes faster.
