In a CAS report from the Design Task Force for C3 and C4, there is mention of a new study note for C4 that is aimed to be in place for the spring '03 exam. The note will replace the Loss Models component from Klugman et al as well as the entire Survival Analysis book. The whole report is at

It makes for some interesting reading. The TF obviously has put a lot of effort into this, and their recommendations seem quite lucid. They should be applauded for their efforts (IMHO).

Yeah, I am telling you, the CAS appears to put much more effort, thought, and care into their exams.

I don't have time to read it right now. Did they say they are definitely going to make the changes and they will definitely be in place next spring?

The pertinent quote is

"The Task Force recommends that Survival Analysis and Loss Models be replaced by the study note that is being written and is anticipated to be placed on the syllabus for the Spring 2003 exam."

It doesn't sound like an absolute commitment but it does sound like a reasonable bet.

and this is ONLY applicable to CAS? SOA C4 will not change?

It's about time. Whoever included the Survival Analysis book in the syllabus should be hung or shot, or both.

I took a Klugman class in school taught with the first draft of that study note, and it is so much better than the Survival Analysis textbook. I only wish it was on the syllabus now.

Yeah, well not until after the rest of us get done with them. That book is the only book I didn't keep a copy of.

The speculation by some was that the SOA was trying to make the exams less 'industry specific' or something, thus the use of a biology book. Right idea, they just used the wrong book to do it. Conversely, the purple Econ book is non-industry and is a great book IMO.

At least thankfully we've got the Loss Models book. That makes up for a lot.

It would be great either way. If they changed only the CAS's 4 or both. I wonder if you could take either one?

It appears to me that the CAS would accept SOA credit but probably not vice versa. Or perhaps SOA would accept CAS 3&4 for SOA course 4 (no way they are signicantly backing off on Life Contingencies).

While the CAS will be giving its own Course 3 starting in November of 2003, Course 4 will be joint (for the next few years at least.)
The Klugman Course 4 study note, when it is ready, would be on the joint Course 4.
