What does everyone think is the passing score for exam 5? Will a 60 pass?

Also, if a 6 point question has 50 points in it, how many points do you need to get full credit? How many to get 5 points?

I think 55% is a passing score

Is that a general rule or does the SOA post that information? This is my first eSsay test so I am new to the grading system.

The passing score is never announced. It varies per sitting. Sometimes the harder the exam, the lower the passing score. I think I got around 50-60 points, and was wondering if that would be enough. But we'll never know our actual score, or the passing score, only that we got a 5, 6, or whatever.

To "Not worried"

Why do you think the pass mark is 55% ?
Is it just a guess ? or do you know any
SOA graders for previous exams ?

Let's do a quick survey here:
What do you think the pass mark for C5 is ?

My own response: at least 60% since the
exam is easier than expected.

After checking up the MC answer key, I think this time passing mark should be 60, may be plus or minus 1 or 2 marks variation.

How did you come up with 60%?

What was your impression of the MC section?

Because MC are hard...scoring 50% of MC and 65% of Written part or scoring 60% of both parts are actually quite good.

I agree that 50% MC and 65% WA would put the passing score at around 60%. And it would be considered good if a canditate achieved a 60% score.

But do you think that the passing score could be any lower than 60%?

I think it could be lower than 60%, and HIGHLY doubt that it could be higher.... most of the people that post here did pretty well.... I'd say 5-15 points above average.... I'd feel good if I was CONFIDENT that I had 55 with a chance for more...

Maximum 3 marks below 60 maybe, while each mark means a lot to a lot of people.

Not Mike,

Thanks for your input.

Were you able to verify the P&C question part (b) overall increase of 2.58% and a new differential of 2.398?

I am not Not Mike, but your answers seem right.

I agree with phila, I haven't re-solved, but I remember 2.58% and I had .417 as my differential, but I used T2 as the base (it's the reciprocal of your number)...

For those returning to school, here is an inside look at how professors grade their final exams:

Dept Of Statistics:
All grades are fitted to a normal curve.

Dept Of Psychology:
Students are asked to blot ink in their exam books, close them and turn them in. The professor opens the books and assigns the first grade that comes to mind.

Dept Of History:
All students get the same grade they got last year.

Dept Of Theology:
Grade is determined by God.

Dept Of Philosophy:
What is a grade?

Law School:
Students are asked to defend their position of why they should receive an A when they really deserve an F.

Dept Of Mathematics:
Grades are variable.

Dept Of Computer Science:
Random number generator determines grade.

Music Department:
Each student must figure out his grade by listening to the instructor play the corresponding note (+ and - would be
sharp and flat respectively). Tone-deaf students fail.

Sounds good to me. I have perfect pitch.

Hey BPC,

If you have "perfect pitch" like you say, then why don't you quit exams and join the major leagues? Everybody needs a good pitcher.

Oh wait, you were referring to music. I am retarded. How am I ever going to pass Course 5?

Ah, the return of my old nemesis, Kung-Fu Phaker. Please, forecast my score on course 5 - or it will be time for us to fight!

(At this time, please play your favorite Matrix tune in your head, and imagine me jumping up about 20' and crashing down on your head with my knee - sorry, YOU don't roll out of the way in time!)

To stay on post, Tkwatts, I too deeply hope that 60 points cuts it - I think I may have squeezed out that many, but it'll be close!

Zee,

No worries mate. Just try to act as humana-ly as possible in the next few months to your fellow ASAs/FSAs and you will pass with certainty. I have foreseen it. And as far as you taking me on Matrix style - "I don't know what you're tawlking about!"

We really don't have a clue where the pass mark will be. I can take a guess and say that it will be in the 60-65 point range, but who knows? All depends on which side of the bed Mrs. SOA wakes up on grading day, I guess.
