View Full Version : Rebel Forum versus Water Cooler

The Water Cooler dwellers have made a semiannual pilgrimage over to the Rebel Forum during times of exams while our board is down. We have regular posters who share many of the same interests you do. I would like to attempt a Rebel Forum versus Water Cooler contest. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to bring the two groups together for an event where both sides can exhibit pride in their own board. We may even make some new friends in the attempt. Many posters have regularly visited both boards, so where is their allegiance? I have no set ideas for the contest at this time. I have started this thread (http://www.casact.org/students/forums/noncgi/Forum14/HTML/002772.html) at the Water Cooler (http://www.casact.org/students/forums/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Water+Cooler&number=14&DaysPrune=10&LastLogin=) as well.

You miss an important point. We are apathetic. We like our Rebel Forum, but if it disappeared tomorrow most of us would go on with our lives. Like Whatever. It's only because of the dedication of people like Traci that this forum even exists.

Judging from the reaction, I'd say "trying to insult" was an understatement. I succeeded. Pathetic indeed, even if I am going to see Monsters Inc. tonight just so I can see the new Star Wars trailer.

Read Harry's review of Monsters on Ain't It Cool News, and read why you should stay for the movie.

I'm going to stay for the movie, and in all honesty, Phantom Menace was bad enough that I wouldn't go to Monsters Inc. if I didn't want to see the movie itself and not just the trailer.

"Contest" sounds so committal.
If I didn't have a job, a wife, two kids, football to watch, Simpsons to watch, food to eat, sleep to sleep, and oh yes an exam to prepare for in six months, I just might have some time to commit to some leisure activity.
As you can see, I already have a life. (rimshot.wav)

Masquerade was open to everyone. There were none discouraged to post.
Professor Snape, Potions is my favorite class.
My friends and I have hosted many games. We take into account the limited time of contestants. I would set a time like Thursday at 4:20 PM ET, November 15. The contest would last about two to ten minutes. For example, I could list seven questions. The first board to post four answers correctly wins. I haven’t given this much thought but I will. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Draco,
Why so provincial? They don't limit quidditch championships to just the UK.
To be fair, you should also invite to SOA desert forum to participate.
In view of their limited activity, you might see fit to give them a handicap. Like posting the questions over there 24 hours in advance. Not too much danger of anyone from this or the CAS forum reading them too early.

Draco,
Your proposed goal: "The first board to post four answers correctly wins."
We should certainly accept that challenge. We may not be good at posting correct answers, but judging from the relative frequency that posts are edited here and on the WC, we are much better at posting correctly.

I would most certainly be up for a contest now that MY exam is over! ON WITH THE FUN!! What do you Rebels do over here for fun or to taunt one another. Seems like the mention of Harry Potter stirs you up a bit. . what else?
Steve White
11-06-2001, 10:49 AM
Right on, Wolverine! On with the fun. Draco, we're ready now. No stalling until Nov 15. Let's go for Thursday at 4:20 PM ET, November 8. If you WC crowd can't post then, that's your tough luck.
(Just kidding of course. Having seen a few of your challenging contests over there, I'm afraid the WC would be open again before we came up with 4 right answers. That would be embarrassing.)

The contest will be Zip suggested by Ultimate Anyone for Legends 3. I will make a few alterations for attracting more participants. I will post 26 Zip questions, one for each letter of the alphabet. To receive individual credit for an answer, your post may not be edited when I call an end to the game. To receive group credit for an answer, your post must carry a tag corresponding to your group. You may receive credit for both a clique and a forum. I anticipate the game will last between five and ten minutes. There will be a preliminary game on Thursday, November 8 at 4:20 PM ET. There will be the official game on Thursday, November 15 at 4:20 PM ET. Please invite any board to play along, including the SOA board. Cliques can be fun. Encourage your clique or create a clique to use the same tag. It would be fun if the WC Trolls proved how intelligent I know they are and win this event.
I will be using the Merriam-Webster Online (http://www.m-w.com/home.htm) dictionary.
This is an example of the questions.

Begins with F; two syllables; given to erratic changeableness

How can you award one point to the WC forum just because Person B belongs to the clique WC Trolls?

Flighty matches the definition enough for general purposes, but I’m pulling the definitions directly from the attached dictionary.
Your clique may cross forum lines. Actually, I’d love for that to happen. I’ll assume any WC tag is meant for the Water Cooler and RF tag is meant for the Rebel Forum. If Person B had just used Trolls, then no points would have been awarded to the Water Cooler.
You don't need to type the question since each answer will begin with a unique letter.

OK, Draco, your overtures seem sincere, but Slytherins are not always what they seem. You speak of joining in friendship, but I still detect some "an eye for an eye" mentality.

Wolverine,
"Anyone over in the Desert forum worth trading for?"
Certainly not by quantity of posts; their all time leader has only 148. It takes under 50 to make the top 10 posters list.
"I personally would not go for the trade."
That's why I'm giving Draco, not you, the chance to make the mistake.
"I sense more personality with Ammie."
Everyone here would insist that Andy is a personality. (No offense intended, Andy; just good-natured banter with our CAS colleagues.)

It seems Draco learned something from all the advice he received after the Masquerade Invite Debacle. He and I are discussing the trade actively as we speak.
I have some questions, which will help me to advise Draco in the best way:
1. Just how good does Andy look in a mini skirt?
2. How big is his shaggy?
3. How would be pronounce "about"?
4. Does he like to play games?
5. How does he verbalize ln(x)?
6. What would Andy find more gross, clipping your toe nails and leaving them on the carpet or boiling spaghetti in a pot you boiled spaghetti in yesterday without washing
it.
Moj - Draco would also like you to answer #6.

Ammie & Draco,
Hmmm. As a gesture of fellowship, the Rebel Forum proposed the trade based just based on the "A" names (well, that's all we admit considering), and now you seem to be focusing on how much you have to gain. Am I dealing with mercenaries?
Here's my best shot at the answers:
1. Worse than Ammie, probably better than I. Plus you are at least as likely to see Andy in a mini skirt as me in one.
2. Even if only 1% as big as his ego, it would would be pretty big.
3. That's a toughie. Wait. I can check out that on-line dictionary Draco provided the link for. Ah, yes. "About" means "around" which in turn means "approximately". Now the answer is easy. Andy doesn't pronounce "about". With him, things are black-or-white.
4. Andy has regularly posted that he plays tennis. And I think he posted that he plays bridge. Or maybe his mother and father were bridge experts; he comes from an exceptional family. He is opposed to all the games life insurance companies play with illustrations.
5. I had to consult that on-line dictionary again, to confirm that "verbalize" could be in writing as well is orally. For writing, the answer is easy. He would verbalize it at great length, probably changing the topic to both Social Security and Republicans along the way. A secondary response to "how", would be "with many typos".
6. That's a tough call. I don't recall he's ever made that comparison. It's safe to say neither is as gross as the Cato Institute. Since I personally think that Andy's on the correct side of most issues (just too far from center for my taste), I'll guess that he would order those the same way I would, and that boiling the spaghetti in the same pot is less gross. It would be tougher if you had also specified eating the cooked spaghetti.
Hope this helps Draco reach a decision (and hopefully, not a wise one).
Ammie
