Hear us now and believe us later... we're going to get this girly man in shape and reduce his flabby fanny, ya!

Ok, still sitting at 298... the diet and exercise begins today!

The goal is to get down to 250, and see where it goes from there...

40 minutes of treadmilling last night, down a pound from yesterday when I weighed this morning...

You gonna see a lot of that (treadmilling), it's the only piece of exercise equipment I have at the house. Since my concern is to drop the flab and not necessarily to build muscle, does it matter that my exercising will be almost entirely on the treadmill?

Just a suggestion...don't weigh yourself everyday.

Your weight fluctuates a pound or two throughout the week, so, you may be a pound heavier tomorrow and get frustrated.

You really can't tell anything from frequent weigh-ins...once a week is generally recommended. Enough time has passed that the results you're seeing are meaningful (not just a loss because you are retaining less water), but often enough that you're aware of your progress.

No problemo whatsoever!

The toughest part will be keeping it up. Do what you did yesterday the next four days in a row, and bam, you're golden and on your way! Do everything in your power to make sure you keep going.

And remember, if it turns things clear, it's your window to weight gain!

While it might not be completely ideal, I managed to lose over 50 pounds using the same type of exercise equipment for 5+ months. (And I've been looking for the same effect as you - not necessarily build muscle, just get moving and work on the weight)

Don't worry about the ideal, especially initially - worry about what you can/will do. If it's all treadmill, so be it - it's far better than nothing!

Yep. I'm in the same boat. The gym is not a realistic option for me, and there is a limit to how much exercise equipment can fit in the house. So I pretty much alternate between the recumbent, aerobics tapes, and occasional recreational exercise like snowshoeing.

Not the optimal routine that a trainer would design, but way better than the slacking off I would do if I tried to fit a gym trip into my current situation. (Rotating shifts are a killer for the person involved, and they're no picnic either for the spouse who ends up shifting their own personal schedule continually in order to actually be able to see the rotating spouse from time to time!)

Down another couple of pounds... first weigh-in is 295

Starting to do a better job about brining lunch rather than buying it, and eating healthier in the process too!

It's my wife's scale... not sure if this (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AHSA8/qid=1137601241) is exactly it, but it's close enough... it reads out to the nearest .1 of a pound. The fact that my first two weigh-ins were a round even number of pounds was just a coincidence

We have a scale like this here at work, but the number after the decimal always appears to be divisible by 2. I think the scale rounds to the nearest EVEN tenth of a pound.

Could that be what yours does?

I'll investigate later :)

I just read the product reviews on Amazon and most of them are pretty negative actually, but I haven't found any consistency issues with the scale we have at home (again, I'm not sure if it's this exact scale, but if not, it's pretty darn close)

I gave the scale a whirl today and it's definitely accurate to the nearest .1 of a pound.... I had an odd number in the tenths spot

Found on New York, New York

In 1990, I used to weigh 397 pounds
I didn't feel good about being fat
I was too fat for my height
Suddenly, I started cutting down on fatty foods

I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down

I used to eat McDonalds hamburgers
I used to eat three Big Macs a night
In 1992, I gained 23 more pounds
Suddenly, I weighed 360 pounds heavier

I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down

From now on, I'm staying away from fatty foods
I'm only eating healthy foods
I'm going to watch my weight
I will make sure not to eat too much

I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down
I'm slimming down

Allstate, you're in good hands

As I mentioned in the weekly weigh in thread, I tripped and twisted my ankle this weekend... I was hoping it'd be back to normal by now, but of course it isn't, and now you all know why I haven't posted anything in my thread for a whole week. Hopefully I'll be back up and running on the treadmill in a few more days!

I was able to drop a few pounds just by eating better...

Rough week in the fact that we spent a long weekend out of town baby sitting a 7 year old... you'd think I'd be fairly active with a 7 year old, but I must've been pretty lazy (or it was just that I did a lot of studying)... Combine that with not eating all that well and with weighing myself on someone else's not so accurate scale, I'm happy that I didn't gain weight this week...

Remember that water weight, waste weight, and many other factors apply to single weigh-ins. Being technically dehydrated (happens all the time) is losing 1.5% of body weight in water - which for you is just over 4 lbs.

Yeah, I lost more than expected last week, so this more or less evens things out. I was weighing myself at another house, thinking my weight was pretty stable, but found I was around 277 when I got home, so I basically starved myself to get back down for the weekly weigh in

You might want to rethink that plan - I find that exercising helps me study. I think staying physically fit helps you mentally and helps keep you from getting too stressed out. If I've been sitting and studying for a long period, a good workout helps clear my mind and burn off any frustrations. I find that I'm able to concentrate better when I'm eating healthy and keeping up with my normal workouts.

I couldn't agree with this more. Don't give up exercise for the sake of studying. There are plenty of hours in the day, you just need to prioritize your schedule. For example, less posting on the AO. :-D

Exactly. For the past two years, I've done a half marathon in May, which is usually about 2 weeks before the May exams. I was worried I wouldn't have time to train and study, but realized that I have plenty of time if I just prioritize. My biggest time-waster was watching TV - I didn't realize how much I actually watched until I started trying to organize my time. Even if you're not training for an event, surely you can find just 30 minutes a few times a week to workout. That will keep up your fitness level enough so that when your exam is over, it'll be easier to get back into it. If you quit for 6 weeks, trust me, it'll be 10 times harder to start back up again!

Reversing last week's trend...

(oh yeah, and I screwed up the math some time ago and was off by a tenth of a pound somewhere in the total calculation)

I got down as low as 240 (I stopped updating this thread to preventing outing myself any further than I might already be)... got a bit lazy at times and have crept back up to 251.4 as of this morning. Time to reverse the trend!

Wow, was I really down in the 240's? I don't even remember buying new clothes! (cheap actuary)

I guess I really was, based on an old pic from around 2008 I found... I like that guy a lot better. I've unfortunately gone back to my couch potato ways and ballooned back up to 290 since then.

In an unfortunate set of circumstances, what with the timing of resolutions and all, a family friend of my wife's passed away on New Years Day of a heart attack. He was only 51 (20 years older than yours truly) when he died, and it kind of gave everyone the shock we needed to form a weight loss group and get our fitness goals back in priority. We're weighing in every two weeks for starters, and despite not getting in a ton of exercise, I have had some early success largely through changing my eating habits.

1/15/12: 281.9 lbs (-8.1)

Sorry I forgot to chime in here... but a few of us in our little weight loss group were out of town on Sunday, so we agreed to push the next weigh-in back by a week, helps to recover from the Super Bowl too, which is probably a good thing, since my unofficial self weigh-in on Sunday had me at the same place I was 2 weeks earlier
