I want to lose 10 pounds.
More than that, I want to get buff.
Cavey sent me an exercise plan, but it's in my work email and I'm home now, but I'll post it later, it's pretty intense but doable I think.
I'm using Weight Watchers system although I'm not going to the meetings or anything like that.
Today, though, I'm having a hard time being good...I quit smoking last night. Again. This time for good. Seriously. I really mean it.
So, this will be my "how long have I gone without a cigarette" thread too.

On the 20th, it will be a year for me w/o smoking. I gained about 15 pounds during this smoke-free year. Honestly, girl, it has to be easier to lose the weight than it is to quit smoking, right?!? Concentrate on the quit, try not to overdo the snacking... but it's better to have a snack than a cigarette.
PM me if you want, anytime. Congrats on day one.

Made it through day 1 without a smoke.
I worked from home yesterday in order to take it easy.
I snacked a lot yesterday, but I don't care. BF and I went and had Chinese food, something that's not on my diet, but I felt I deserved it.
Made it through an hour of traffic this AM without melting down...yay me.
Have 2.5 packs of Extra Sugar Free.
No more extra snacking today, and to the gym tonight!!

CONGRATS to you as well! You should pamper yourself on the 20th.
My doc's advice has been...do whatever you need to to quit smoking, you can always lose the weight. The smoking is much less healthy.
But, I think I"ll be able to control myself... I started a WW-type diet in early December in preparation for quitting smoking this month.
I quit last March, too...this time is the last time, though! :swear:

No amount of smoking is good for anyone, but on one visit to my doctor when I answered the question "How many per day" and I said "~1 pack a week", my doctor looked at it and said "You call that smoking?!" :shake: He was teasing of course, but it threw me off. Ah, I should know better!

I wish I could do that!
I like smoking. No, I love it.
But, I just can't do the "have a couple with a beer on Friday night thing." If I do that once, I'll do it again the next Friday. Then Saturday too. Then Fri, Sat and Sun the next weekend...then I wake up Monday morning and buy a pack.
I'm such a heavy smoker, it's gotta be all or nothing :(
Well, you should smoke...but if you do this weekend, have one for me! :D

When you're a teenager, coolness factor (if you're an idiot like me).
When you're an adult, there's a little headrush involved, some benefits similar to caffeine, but the benefits mostly consist of avoiding nicotine withdrawal.
i've been cigarette free for roughly 5 months. i started in high school, tho nothing heavy...mainly a social smoker, especially around alcohol. was smoking more often in grad school. slowed down when i started working. picked up again when it got hectic in my life. so much to the point i was almost at a pack a day as recent as a year ago.
i had gotten sick about 4 or 5 months ago and was out of cigarettes. started having nicotene withdrawal for a couple days, but was so sick, i didn't have the energy to go to the gas station down the street for smokes. once the craving and withdrawal passed, i thought...why not just quit. so, been smoke free since then. have an occasional craving, not for nicotine, but for habit...having a cigarette in the car ride home, smoking with alcohol, etc. but, i know if i have one, im back for good. so...i enjoy the cleaner teeth and the fresh smell of my hair and clothes much more than i would if i had a cigaratte. :D so, good luck to you girlie. you can do it!!

Nicotine has a great kick. I enjoy the taste of smoke, whether its a cigarette a cigar or a camp fire.
Monday I had my first cigarette in over 10 years. A few weeks before a friend forgot an empty pack in my car, empty except for one bent cigarette. It was a nice day so I parked in a lot a few blocks from my office in an area where their revitalizing a few buildings. I lit the cigarette with the car lighter and took a walk. The cool air, the warm smoke in my mouth, I could barely inhale. About half way through I could feel that crisp clarity of the nicotine. The leaves on the trees seem sharper and what seemed like a lazy day switched to an afternoon full of potential. Back in the car, heading back to the office I wanted to stop and buy a pack. That subtle familiar pull came back from my single indiscretion, a pack won’t hurt, I can have just one at lunch, wasn't that walk nice. I didn't stop. I'm just on a prolonged break, an education in physical subservience.

Awesome :) I used Candy Canes... all the flavors should be on sale right now to make room for the Valentine's Day Candy. You were smart to start the WW before your quit. (Getting into a different pattern.)
On my quit anniversary I have to work during the day, then we have a show to play that night... but as soon as I have the chance, I'm getting a new car stereo as a reward ;)
I know myself, and just having one or two would start the whole thing over again. It's not about the nicotene... it's about the habit.

Yesterday
Worked late, missed the gym. Kicked myself for doing so, what I SHOULD have done was leave and work out, then work at home last night for a while.
But, in an effort to forgive myself for not working out, I decided that, hey, I quit smoking, which is the #1 healthy thing you can do for yourself, and therefore I can do no wrong this week.
This rationale led to several glasses of wine, which put me over the points for the day :swear:
Cigarettes smoked: 0
This weekend I have a couple social event where people will be smoking. So, I'm not going to beat myself up if I'm putting food in my mouth to kill a craving. I'll try to be reasonable for the most part, and recommit to the diet/exercise plan on Monday.

Cold Turkey?Well, not quite. I used Wellbutrin.
I highly recommend it. It decreases the frequency and severity of cravings so I started to cut down a lot before I quit, and then afterwards it just kinda stabilizes your mood. Like, it's not a total crisis that I want a cigarette but can have one. I'll keep taking it for about another 3 weeks, and at that point I'll be over the nicotine addiction and some of the habitual part will be lessened (you know, after dinner, lunch break, having a beer, etc.)

Last week - made it to the gym 3 times.
Today is 3 weeks with no cigarettes.
I've gained a couple pounds, but I'm consoling myself with this logic - I'm probably putting on muscle, as I've really seen progress in reps and weight in my workout, plus, last week was the one week of the month where I tend to weigh a little more anyway, so this week's weigh-in should be more meaningful. Plus, I'm not smoking. I'll most likely start tracking what I'm eating again in another couple of weeks.
I'm starting to think about what nice thing I'll do for myself next Monday when I celebrate one month of being smoke-free, which is kinda cool!

I miss smoking all the time, actually, but after sex isn't a big deal. I usually (but not always) have sex in my house, and I didn't smoke in my house.
the worst times are when I'm having a drink and I see someone else smoking.

Mr. M sent his mom a big bouquet of roses when she went one year smoke free. Is your SO supportive of your smoking cessation? Is he a smoker?
He is a smoker.
But, he's very supportive of my quitting...he's changed his habits so that, short of snooping through his stuff, I'd have no way of knowing that he's smoking. He doesn't smoke anywhere that I can see him, and, when we've been out at a bar or a party, he distances himself from me when he smokes.
Fortunately, he's a much lighter smoker than I am. He probably smokes 3 a day, except when he's drinking or socializing.
However, on Valentine's Day he's having surgery, and he's said that he's planning on quitting then since he can't smoke for a while anyway.
He said that his #1 motivation for quitting is that he doesn't want me to smoke. I feel that he's got to do it for himself. Anyway, I'm through with trying to change people...he's reponsible for his health, not me. I only ask that he not expose me to it, and CLEARLY if we ended up having kids together I'd insist that they not even know that he smokes at all. He's already agreed to that. If he were to quit altogether I'd be thrilled, but I'm not going to nag him about it.

Made it to the gym 3 days this week (I had a good excuse to skip it on Monday - emergency root canal. :( )
I'm making progress...I can tell because I've been writing down the reps and weights every time, and the minutes on the cardio machines and resistance levels.
This week I met a goal I feel good about...yesterday I did 30 minutes of a difficult program on the elliptical machine. I used to HATE the elliptical machine...too difficult, my legs hurt, etc. So, I used to do 30 min on the recumbent bike. Then I forced myself to do my 10 minute warm-up on the elliptical, then weight machines, then 20 min on the bike. Then I switched that from 10 on the E., weights, 10 on the E., and 10 on the bike. Now, I can do all 30 min of cardio on the E. Woo Hoo! Next weeks goal is 35 minutes, then 40 the next week.
One question, though...when I"m tracking my weights/reps/etc., it seems that I'm progressing faster with my lower body than with my upper body. Is this because I'm working out my lower body everyday (on the Elliptical) while my upper's getting worked out 2 times a week? Or am I doing something wrong?
Also, next week is one month with no smokes...what shall I do to treat myself? I think a little trip to Lucky Brand Jeans might be in order... :D
One annoying thing about getting in shape...the better you do at it, the more time it takes! But, I'm enjoying it now like I never really did in the past...last night I was bummed when I had to leave the gym. I could have done another 5 min on the elliptical and some more crunches, but I had to get home.
LoneGirl

I'm thinking that I read somewhere that you build your lower body faster because those muscles are larger than the muscles in your upper body. I know that they recommend exercises such as squats as part of a strength workout, because the thigh muscles are large and thus you'll burn more calories during your workout. It may also be due in part to the fact that you're doing the elliptical everyday too.

Cool, thanks.
I noted some real progress in my upper-body work-out last night, which was encouraging. I had a goal (2 sets of shoulder presses and 2 sets of chest presses at 30 lbs) and I met it, so that was good.
According to my weigh-in I dropped about 1 or 2 pounds since last week. That was cool!
Monday was 4 weeks without a cigarette. My reward is a facial at a local spa.
I stopped taking the Wellbutrin on Sunday. I'll give myself the rest of this week and next week, then I'll start an actual diet on Monday 2/20 with the goal of losing 8 to 10 pounds, depending on where I am at the starting point.

My hubby was a much lighter smoker than I was. You are right about one thing... you have to quit for yourself, not for anyone else. He will figure that out. I hope his surgery goes well, and emergency root canal?! geez... bet your dentist was proud of you for quitting :)

She was...I saw her again yesterday for emergency root canal part 2, so, no gym! :swear:
Then we scheduled parts 3 and 4. :( I had no idea how long these things drag out. Anyway,
Thanks for the support!! :bighug:

Root canals suck. Emergency or planned, they are not fun. Just be thankful you don't have a sinus infection on top of it. That's what happened to me - imagine trying to breathe through a plugged up nose in the dentist chair getting your root canal done.
But after they are all done, you're happy to have a happy mouth again. :)
My recommendation is to abuse the Nitrous oxide. Tell 'em it isn't having any effect. They'll crank it up... soon you'll be in a dream world. I actually ENJOYED getting my wizdom teeth pulled. I was feeling no pain, and had a wicked-cool buzzz b/c of the gas.

Not everyone reacts so well to the gas... I had my wisdom teeth pulled and I cursed out everyone within earshot. One nurse wouldn't come near me, even after I was coming out of it. Everyone else just looked at me funny and when I asked my mom why, she just wanted to know where I learned language like that.

The assistant that was working with my oral surgeon was a hottie. She was actually the one that cranked up the gas for me. We were just chit-chatting the whole time while we were waiting for the gas/'caine to take effect. Like I said, enjoyable experience!

Nitrous oxide rocks! I'd have my wisdom teeth out again if I could. . .well and if I didn't have to deal with the pain and swelling after. . .so I take that back. But nitrous oxide still rocks.
Titania, glad you are still not smoking! I think I harassed you enough over the years. We need to get together for some light Indian food soon.

I agree! I'm not in town much this week, though...it'll have to be next week.
Yes, and you've done your part with the harassment...I'm kicking myself enough, but I'll let you know if I need you to step up again.

No gym this week and bad eating habits.
At the moment I'm a member of a gym near my office, which is about an hour from my house. It's convenient when I'm waiting for rush hour to end during the week, but when I'm not in town it's basically inaccessable.
So, most I'm going to change to a gym closer to home. Then I can go on the weekends rather than just Monday through Thursday, and weeks when I'm working from home I can still make it to work out.
So, this week was bad...but, ZERO CIGARETTES!
And, good news...my BF quit smoking on Tuesday. He's doing well! He was in the hospital (scheduled surgery, nothing tragic) and can't/doesn't want to smoke, so he's done with it. I'm so psyched!!

Thanks!
I joined a SECOND gym near my home on Sunday morning. Currently my gym is down the street from my office, so I've only been working out M through Th (my office is an hour away from home.) So, now I can work out on the weekends, or if I'm working at home, etc. Good stuff!
I started up on my WeightWatcher's based diet again yesterday, so far so good.
I think that the smoking thing is under control...last Friday I was stuck in a horrible traffic jam (took over 2 hours to get home from work) and I was supposed to have dinner with friends. I looked like I was going to be late b/c of the traffic, so I reached for my cell phone to call them and let them know and I realized I had left my phone on my desk at work. So, I freaked the heck out. I felt like if I had a pack of smokes I would ahve smoked 10 of them in a row. I considered looking in all the compartments in my car for the off-chance there was a forgotten cig in there, or a butt, a filter, ANYTHING! I considered pulling over once I got off the expressway and buying a pack...but, I didn't. I managed to hook up with my friends, two of whom are smokers. I considered bumming one off them, but I didn't. Then, after dinner, even though I was calmed down and had a good time, I STILL was craving. So, I stopped somewhere and bought some bubble gum. I made it through that night without smoking and it was really hard.
Therefore, I feel ready to lose these 8 or 10 pounds and confident that I won't pick up the smoking again!!
YAY ME! :D
Meanwhile, my BF is doing pretty well, although he said that Sunday (day #5 for him) was bad. He made it through though. He said if he happens to pick it up again, he'll use the Zyban like I did. Today is one week for him! I hope he can maintain.

You both still smoke free?? :)
I am!!
I had a fitness test yesterday. The results:
I'm aerobically fit.
I've lost 3.5 pounds since the doctor's visit that started all this in November.
I still need to lose 9 more.
I need to work on strength and flexibility - therefore, I'll be taking yoga and pilates. First yoga class is tonight.
So, progress so far...I'm in shape aerobically, down 3.5 pounds, and smoke free for 8 weeks as of today!

My favorite yoga position is airplane, though dead bug is pretty awesome too. I do upward facing dog every day, whether I am doing a full yoga routine or not.

So, how's the yoga and pilates going?
Well, I've made it to yoga class the last two Monday nights. There is a pilates class on Wednesdays, but last week and unfortunately tonight I've been occupied with home-buying stuff...last week it was inspections and tonight we're going to meet with the realtor to craft a response to the inspection results. :( Oh well. Hopefully I'll make it to the gym at some point, even just to do strength training and burn some calories on the elliptical.
Over the weekend I didn't make it to the gym at all...but I DID manage to do a 2 hour hike with the boyfriend and dogs on Saturday, and an hour mountain biking outing in the muddy spring weather by myself on Sunday! :D
I must say biking through the woods by yourself when it's cold and rainy so that there's no one else out on the trails is a lot like yoga/meditation. I had a blast...and the hot shower afterward was even better!
I need to get to the gym tonight and tomorrow night to stay on track for this week. Should be able to at least get a half hour in.
Thanks for asking!

Oh I looooooooooooooooooooooooove pilates!!! I tried yoga a few years ago and just couldn't get into it, but I love my pilates class! It's been great for my back and abs. I used to get back pain whenever I was on my feet a long time, like marathon shopping days before Christmas. I notice this past Christmas (first one since I started pilates) that I didn't have any back pain at all on my shop-till-you-drop days. And my abs are pretty spectacular now. Ok, no six pack, but I won't hesitate to wear a bikini this summer. And I have a 2-year old who was delivered by c-section, so I long ago thought my chances for toned abs were over. (I've been doing pilates for about 6 months now. A 1-hour class once a week, but I do some of the ab stuff after my cardio workouts 3 days a week too.)

Cool dude! You are inspiring me. I haven't made it to a pilates class yet, but your post should motivate me for next week. I have some lower back pain, and of course I'd love it if my abs were more toned.
Last week wasn't great. There's so much stuff going on right now and I only made it to the gym twice, didn't eat great either. But this week I'm back on track so far...I made it to the gym Monday and last night, I'm going for cardio and yoga tonight, and cardio and weights tomorrow night, then it should be nice enough for two hikes-with-dogs this weekend. Back on the diet, too.
I was a little scared to get on the scale this week, but it seems I didn't gain anything over my bad week last week. So, still down 3 or 4 pounds, 9 to go.
