View Full Version : Course 3 - How many life q's??
anyone have a good idea of how many life questions were in the exam? i know its usually between 20-22, but can anyone remember for sure? I felt the Life q's went well, but found the non-life stuff tough .. i know, i know, ur all gonna say the opposite! sigh......
anyway, so if i know the number of life q's i can probably give a good estimate of my score.
oh, and i think 24 would be the highest passmark this time around...i felt it was a touch harder than previous exams.

I don't remember a number, but it sure seemed to me like there was less life material on this exam than on some of the old ones.
Maybe 16-18 questions? I'm not really sure.

This exam definately seemed to be extremely heavily biased towards the life/actuarialmath side of things. I would guess probably 26-28 questions were based around the actuarial math.
now i'm wondering wether u two wrote the same exam!
my instinctive opinion was that there were a lot of life q's...but that could be my natural optimism turning into hope, since i found those questoins easier.

It sure felt like there more non-life questions on the exam, but for me, the non-life ones took longer to answer. I felt like I was in a groove on the life part, so the distribution was probably not out of the ordinary (20-24 life, 16-20 non life). Also, it is easier to remember questions about non-life than life.

I agree with you LFC, I find Life questions a lot easier than non-life...I sitll don't understand Markov chains and simulation except for a few very straight forward questions went over my head too....I hated the non-life stuff but I think ALAS that atleast 24 will be a pass this sitting unfortunately if I pass it will be on the skin of my nose....I did find some of the life problems challenging though like I didn't get that 2 year term-2 year deferred whole life insurance on 60? what the heck was that I kept trying to figure out the intergrands, the term would go from 0 to 2 but the deferred part doesn't start till 2 so what the heck do you do??? after much thought and wasted time on this question I finally gave up and moved to the next...there was also another life question that boggled my mind the one where the insurer bought a 1000 fully discrete whole life insurance and after the 10th year he decided he wanted to retain the insurance but only make 10 more years of annuity payments...I didn't get that...and what made me really knock my brains out was that recursive reserve formula that I forgot to memorize the night before...SIGH!!! ...its going to be a long 6 weeks...does anyone know when the results are coming out??? I hope not on December 31st I dont' want my newyears celelbration ruined

If you don't pass you need to attend Bob Batten's seminar. Integration was not needed for any of the problems on the exam.

Trisha, results typically come out the the first or second Friday in January, so you can celebrate on Jan.1 and hopefully celebrate a couple of weeks after that.

now now..relax trisha....though i'm glad u also find the life part easier! anyway, we shouldnt worry abt it now...but after reading the 2 contrasting replies above, i really wonder wether there were that many life q's after all.
that deferred q...now i have a horrible memory so excuse me....but did it have a select table? in that case, it was a discrete insurance...i transformed it by adding the age by 2, discounting and mutlipling by 2px..so it was still a term inurance except for age (x+2). then i used the table to get the mortalities. like i said, have a lousy memory so that probably wasnt even the question!
i remember ur 2nd q though...well i think its done this way. u find the reserve at year 10..and then it pretty much becomes a simple temporary annuity problem with 10 payments. so the real working out part was getting the 10th yr reserve.
i think the results take 8 weeks, no? so i'm guessing 1st week jan.
i wouldnt mind a pass mark of 24...i might just make it!!

I take that back. On one problem you had to integrate the const k from 0 to 1. Which of course equals k. Other than that I can not think of any problems that required integration. Any problem that says DML or constant force does not require integration.

a bit harsh bama...regardless of wether integration was required or not.

I wasn't trying to be harsh. I was trying to give GREAT advice. I think many people on the Forum would vouch that I'm not a harsh person. I was trying to help. It may have come off the wrong way. Hopefully Trisha didn't take it that way. If you did Trisha, I apologize.

Your right Bama I made a mistake I meant summation signs not intergrands...althought I do remember a problem where I had do some intergating I can't remember the problem but wasn't it a e(xy) problem using De-Moivre's law...I don't remember...this is becoming a big blur to me....I don't think I can afford to waste any more money on Course 3 but if I don't pass I think I might get the Mahler notes on non-contingecies part...I hear he does a good job explaining all that simulation and markov chain stuff??is this true...you seem pretty confident Bama?? is that what you used?? well I hope you pass....

No, I didn't take it the wrong way don't worry...I made a mistake with intergrands/summations signs...right now all I can think about is the new season of Friends and the 40 minute episode tomorrow...and freddy prince junior babysitting for Rachel...hehehe!!!

Thanks!! I hope you pass as well. I guess you must be a student (otherwise your company would pay for you to go to the seminar)? I highly recommend Mahler's notes, but I give a MUCH higher recommendation for Bob Batten's seminar!

Well I am a student in the actuarial sense since I dont' have all my exams but nope I work my company just doesn't really pay for seminars unless they are the higher up ones that are required...if you want a seminar paid for we have to prove first it will be useful.....
