What does "5 guesses still open" mean?

I got 26! Is that *almost* guarantee a pass?

I'm thinking (maybe wishfully) that the pass mark is 23, maybe 24 at the highest. Of course, this may just be because I got a 25. . . .

Has anyone calculated a distribution of scores based on the submitted answers?

26 is an absolute pass... nice work.
Here are the scores for the first 30 submissions. Analyze to your heart's content, but if this is believed to be a realistic sample then the news is not good (50% would pass with pass rate set at 26).
11 13 18 18 19 19 19 20 21 21 22 22 23 24 25 26 26 27 27 27 28 28 29 29 30 30 31 31 33 33

I think it is much more likely for those who did well to submit their answers. I suspect as usually the pass mark with fall between 20-24. It is never less than 50% and never higher than 60%. Good Luck BGBuddy!

:-? I got about 28 right.
Among those 12 that I didn't get, I definitely missed two out of 3 simulation questions. Not sure abou the other simulation one. Boy! I hate simulation. Life cont. was quite easy. However, I made 4 dummy mistakes. Missed 1 or 2 ruin probability questions and 3 stochastic process ones.

I only "remembered" some of my answers, so here is my result:
24 definites
3 probablys
9 wrong
2 maybes
2 guesses
I really felt I did better on the exam than it turned out. I did not account for the "premiums paid only until the first death" on the joint life problem. Dumb mistake on the R and S problem. Wasn't very solid on the decrement problems. However, got 2 of my guesses right. Did very well on Ruin Theory, which was a very weak area when I got a 5 in the Spring. I have Tredway from the GSU seminar to thank for the Ruin Theory success. And of course, Batten was a tremendous help for Life Cont.

What's the rule on taking your answers out of the test room to see how you did??
Is this allowed, or is it just done secretly by everyone??

I guess it is possible for the passing score to be over 60%, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Ever since yesterday, I can't get these lines from the new Foo Fighter's song out of my head:

Done, I'm done and I'm on to the next!"

I agree that this isn't a random sample of all those who took the exam. I doubt that many people who ended up guessing on most of the questions would bother to submit their answers!

I have to go with the second option...I would say the practice of coding answers into the calculator is frowned upon but tolerated by the SOA.
Some in larger test centers have even written their answers out on their admission tickets.
If they wanted to stop it all they would have to do is a little post exam inspection, but they don't do that. No one who didn't do something that rubs it in the SOA's face has had any problem with it to my knowledge.
There was one candidate that had posted their answers at this board's predecessor and got so paranoid about being found out that they confessed to the SOA. Of course they were disciplined, how I don't know.

I appear to have a raw score of 23 out of 40 which includes my random guesses. I've seen reference to the pass mark "usually being 22 - 24". Does anyone know exactly what the pass mark was on Course 3 (and perhaps Course 4, since it's probably similarly distributed) for the last several exams?
I think I'm supposed to start studying for Course 6 (I took Course 4 earlier) but more data about this would help. Is there a sense of whether a raw score of 23 is 25% likely / 50% likely / 75% likely to pass?
Thanks,
Macroman

I think 23 is 50-50 to 60% pass
22 would be about 30% to 35%
24 about 90% to 95%
If you're in a hurry to get started with #6, why not if you have some materials. You will doubtless have to take it eventually anyway. You might have a hard time convincing your company to order materials before the results are out, but I'm sure a lot of people who know they have to take c#6 are already working on it.
just my opinion...

For what it's worth, consensus among forum members who wrote the Nov. 2001 C3 was that the pass mark for that exam was 22.

Macroman / Econwiz,
I appreciate the data. Anyone else out there have the stats on what the pass mark has been on previous Course 3 (/ Course 4) exams?
By the way, I have snarfed study materials from someone who passed Course 6 last May. So there's no issue of whether my company has to buy them. It's a question of making sure it's worthwhile for me to bury my nose in them.

Macro,
Is it safe to assume then that 25 (my score) is near 100% safe? At first I thought so, but there has been some mention here that the pass mark might go higher (26+). Thoughts?
I have scored a 5 two previous attempts and believe I scored 24 this sitting. This disturbing trend says the SOA will set the passmark at 25 or 26. Not that the SOA would single me out or anything, but I seem to caught in the top 41st percentile when they will only accept the top 40th percentile.
