So, we were making a Thai curry this weekend. We made a half recipe because we had only one can of coconut milk, and we happened to look at the label on the can...
A can of coconut milk has about 900 calories and 95 grams of fat!
Goodbye, favorite Thai dish, you've been relegated to special occasions only.
I also heard something sad this weekend about those big burritos they sell at places with names like Moe's or Willy's. What I heard was that the flour tortilla - just the tortilla, not including all the yummy cheese and sour cream and guac inside - has 8 grams of fat! I can't find any nutritional information for any of the chains online so I can't confirm this. Does anyone on this board know?
Goodbye, wonderful burritos?

Depends. Type "tortilla" in the food search here:
http://www.calorieking.com/
fat content seems to vary widely depending on:
- size
- wheat or not
- who makes it
Saw some tortillas as low as 2 g, and others up to 9 grams.

One place that you can look (but Moe's isn't on it...) is http://dwlz.com/restaurants.html. It shows weight watcher points, and for some, it has cal, fat, fiber, carbs.
you can download it to a Palm also, if you use one.

Yep, 9 grams. The meal I eat there is 55 grams of fat total and 1450 calories.
I am shocked and stunned.

Thanks for the Thai curry info... although it was unfortunately a couple days late for me. I just had some great chicken massaman curry over the weekend (that I know was made w/ coconut milk.) I certainly knew it wasn't health food, but didn't know it was quite that bad either... especially considering my portion size. Ah well, I'll chalk it up to Super Bowl weekend and move on.

Oh. And wine! Wine has between 80 and 120 calories per four ounce serving. (Who the heck drinks just four ounces of wine, anyway?!) That's not much by itself but add in the fact that alcohol makes me hungry...
Goodbye cheap red wine.

Heh. Yeah, we read the label, dumped the can into the wok and cooked it up. It was a quiet meal but we ate every last bite of it.

5 oz is a standard serving, I believe. About 5 per bottle. One glass per day at about 150 calories seems a reasonable "snack" to me if you like wine.
It's just a matter or what you want to spend your calories on, as long as they aren't on something positively unhealthful. (The coconut milk does seem pretty bad . . . .)

I use lite coconut milk and I don't really notice a difference. It has about half the calories and fat, so it's still high but not quite so horrible. My grocery store carries the "Thai Kitchen" brand, I would recommend it if they offer it in your area:

another benefit of the burrito bol at chipotle is that it is MUCH easier for me to stop eating half way through and then save it for another time. the tortillas just don't frige and reheat well at all.

My view on eating is this, enjoy life and enjoy what you eat as a main meal, just eat smaller portions and cut out all the junk food.
And don't cut out the wine, one glass of wine a night will not make or break your fitness goals.

Cool - thanks for this tip! We were gonna try diluting with nonfat yogurt and/or milk. We might still try that in the interests of science.

That's really what I would like to do - maintain my current diet to the extent possible, just eat less per sitting. Radical diet change usually backfires for me. I do fine for a week, then I eat the entire fridge. I'm trying to treat this like my 401K - don't tinker with it too much, but give it a good hard look every year and make sure you're on the right track. I just wasn't mentally prepared for what a good hard look at burritos and Thai food would show me. ;)

That's why I try to write down nearly everything I eat and find out the calories and fat - I've found quite a few things that I didn't think would be a good deal and have learned quite differently. That's why I'll also probably keep writing things down even once I'm at my goal - otherwise I have a feeling my memory will start subtracting calories from what I'm eating, and it will creep up quite a bit without my realizing it.
Tracking everything is a bit of a pain, but for me, I think it's the only way I can truly keep on track.

Well, at least you're getting the recommended amounts of iron in your diet!

Coconut fat is already pretty bad for you. Maybe there's a way to cut the amount you use? Using lite (as somneopne mentioned) might be the trick, or simply use half a dose, and see if it adversely affects the recipe.
Also, eating less of the dish will help. I'm not one for denying myself of a flavor. Just gotta eat less of it and more of something healthier.

:crying:good god! i wanted to get a burrito from moe's for dinner. i noticed they have a nutrition thingy on the site. you heard wrong. it's not 8 grams of fat, it's.......NINE grams of fat just for the plain tortilla. WTF?!?!
i calculated up what my dinner would come to....holy fatman!! and this is for a kid size burrito with chicken, rice, cheese, quac, sour cream, lettuce, pico de gallo, black beans and pinto beans....930 calories?!?!?!, 42g fat?!?!?! 1670 mg sodium?!?! at least it's good fiber and protein, 15g and 31g. i bet the regular size one is close to double that. :exams:
no wonder kids are growing up to be so fat these days...we didnt have these foods when i was young. heck, we hardly even ate fast food growing up. we grew up eating 3 regular meals a day. and us kids usually had a snack after school like cookies or chips or something (yeah, not healthy but it's not like a supersize fries or something) and maybe a dessert after dinner.
anyways...the big question is... do i still go to moe's to get the moo moo mr. cow with s.c and guac added? :shudder:

If I got the guac, I wouldn't also add sour cream. Just sayin'

It's the carbs that get you, not the fat.

Yea, coconut milk is definitely the most fatty common ingredient in Thai food.... imagine how many calories are in their cocomilk based soups.
I've learned to enjoy Indian curry with a yogurt based sauce, still has that amazing taste (slightly different) yet isn't nearly as fatty, and consequently, has much less calories.

Not only is coconut milk high in fat, but coconut oil is the most saturated fat there is. It may not be worse for you then trans fats, but then again, maybe it is.
The good flour tortillas are made with lard. Not just fat, but saturated fat. Eight or nine grams won't kill you, but then again, maybe it will.
