View Full Version : anyone studying yet?
Can't seem to get myself motivated for this. (could be the impending sense of doom with results coming out soon).
Anyone have suggestions on where to start?
what seminars are available for this exam?

Da Bears! 1:1 -- Thou shalt not study prior to results release, for this is an abomination
2 Thou mayest print the foolscap on which the Holy Syllabus is writ. 3 Thou mayest photocopy the Holy Syllabus. 4 Thou mayest assemble the foolscap into binders, like unto like, and thrice penetrate the foolscap with thine paper punch. 5 And all of this may be done prior to the Day of Judgment, and it shall be pleasing to the Exam Committee.
6 But if any shall study the Holy Syllabus prior to the Day of Judgment, it shall be a sin; 7 and such a person shall be shunned, and deemed as a reprobate, and shall be unclean in the eyes of the Profession. 8 And the ways of the Profession are just and righteous altogether, praise be to the Casualty Actuarial Society.

very funny!
this makes me feel much better about not studying.
Not yet, I think I'll start the week of June 5th.

I'm waiting for results, but then again this is my 3rd try so I can afford to wait.
I am the sinner of the bunch obviously. I've been studying for a month already; nothing heavy of course, but reading through the articles.
I'm about a fourth of the way through the syllabus currently.
I'm not usually this sadistic, but I'm planning a trip to Disneyworld with the young'un in early September, so this should allow me to get through the syllabus before we go so that I can get the most out of the exam seminar. I figure I'll lose about 2 weeks of studying between packing, unpacking, vacation, and recovery, so the little bit I do now will help later down the road.
FYI, I've read section B of the syllabus, currently on section C, and will be starting section D next.

That would be one slow, torturous, painful death.

Is that the one that describes the secret relationship between Shalom Feldblum and Amy Bouska?
Ordered All-10 today.

Yea I started...
I read some articles...
Don't hate.
I needed to assuage my guilty feelings of not being prepared for Exam 7. So if I know I failed, then I guess I know my result; therefore, I can study. These are my rules.
For the Feldblum seminar intro, he writes that exam 9 may take 400+ hrs. Is he for real? If that's the case, then I should've started studying back in April.

Number of hours is all relative. It certainly takes more hours than parts 5 and 6, and might be on par with part 7 depending on your background. If it took you 300 for part 5, then it might take you 350-400 for part 9.

Some people need more time, some don't. I never bother with counting hours so I couldn't tell you for sure. It definitely takes an insane effort to pass, since the pool of candidates is smarter and more motivated because many of them are near the finish line.

I think I am sitting this one out...partially for your reasoning. I am not sure I can put in the extra effort required this time. If it was my last exam, I could muster up the courage. I have passed 6, and am awaiting results for 5. I will get the ridiculous VEE requirement completed, and get an early start on 7.

And then there are people like me who will lower the curve by biting off more than I can chew.

Then come aboard -- we need more guys like you. They still haven't released the pass mark for last year's exam, but based on an estimate of my raw score (and others who posted) it was clear that they jacked up the pass mark.
Me too!
Just got the manuals.

Was going to wait till the results came out but that may not happen for another week. It's like I have this biological clock in me that says it's time to get moving again. Probably start early next week.

Yeah, I have been reading over Feldblum's IRR paper to get started and will start making my notes on Monday...can't get too far behind on my 1st try.
Good luck!

I ordered first day too, but no manuals. So far the learning objective A readings have been pretty good, but I'm not retaining the material...

Oh yeah, and after a surprising failure on part 7 have absolutely no motivation right now. I never begin until after the July 4th holiday anyway, so I have some time to commiserate. I'm so incredibly pissed right now, it's beyond words.

If I start too early, I'll go insane. Besides, I either pass or fail based on studying the month to 6 weeks before the exam. I'm a crammer. All hope hinges on my ability to get hours in at the end.
Also, I honestly wasn't actually expecting to pass Part 8, and I was not going to take Part 9 if I failed 8.
So, I printed off the web articles today. The part that most sucks is that we don't ahve any two-sided printers. I'll need four binders between the articles and past exams. Like I feel like hauling that much crap around...
Serious question, though. This last setting was my first try in a few years. I didn't order any additional materials (like All-10, actex, or whatever you kiddos are using these days) and I didn't attend a seminar. My personal opinion is that seminars are overrated for the cost. But maybe that's just me...
I will not attend a seminar for Part 9, and I am unsure if I want to invest in supplemental materials. It appears that "All-10" is popular. Is that the recommended supplement that folks are using these days? Does anyone else use something else that you recommend? I'm half-tempted to eschew all supplements and just focus on the actual readings. Sometimes I feel like I'm actually making more work for myself with the other stuff.

Yes to your first question and a qualified yes to your second. I think people either go with All10 or CSM study manuals, and the majority prefer All10 due to their more detailed summaries and explanations of the readings as opposed to CSM's simple point form summaries.
For me personally, though, my main focus is on questions from past exams, and I get a bit of a "back off, let me study the way I want" feeling whenever All10 does something in their summaries like suggesting mnemonics. On top of that, CSM is cheaper, and I have to pay for study materials myself (sounds like you do as well), so I prefer CSM. But like I said, I believe I'm in the minority there.

I track my hours meticulously. 400 hours got me a pass on the first try for exams 1 to 7. For 9, I wasn't as comfortable with the material and studied 450 hours. I got a 5.
This time I will put in 300 hours starting mid-August.

Did you really put in 400 hours on 1-4?

Okay, I put in 400 hours once I started keeping track... Exam 3 I think. I didn't take act sci at university so I didn't get to learn a lot of the material in school.

I didn't mean it in a mean way, I just wanted more info to see if lmmrrsn's situation was similar to mine and if I should increase my planned study hours a bunch to not end up with the same result as him/her.
I took act sci in university so obviously I studied a lot less for the first 4 exams.

I just want to say that lmmrrsn is one of the smartest people I know and I studied with that person for exam 9. I don't know of anyone who studies as hard. Yes, they may have put in tons of hours for lower exams, but usually this person got a 9 or 10 so not a big suprise. I'm scared for any exam this person doesn't pass...
