Tournaments will be held every Monday evening at 9:00PM eastern starting June 5th, 2006 through the season championship on October 23, 2006, with no game held on July 3rd, 2006. We use the online site PokerStars to host the events. The tournaments will be posted on the sites private tournament section by the end of May 2006, and once events are beginning to be posted, the password will available by PMing tournament staff (me, matty, and anyone who volunteers to help).

There will be three levels of events: Regular weeks (entry fee of $10+1), Majors (entry fee of $20+2), and the Championship (entry fee of $30+3).

The complete schedule of events is in Post #2 by our scheduling coordinator, Matty.

There will be a statistical competition this year, maintained byMatty in post #3. The following information will be tracked: Events Entered, Money Won, and Points. Points will be based on the system detailed once the event is complete. All standings will be updated within 24-36 hours of event completion barring unforeseen complications. All entrants will be tracked by PokerStars ID. I will not link PokerStars ID to AO ID, but if you play, your playing name (not city) will be posted.

If at any time, there are questions or discrepancies, the decision of the tournament staff is final and binding for the nothing that is affected.

Stats we're keeping (will be in post 3)

Events Played
Money Won (or lost)
Points using the modified cardplayer system
A few other small things

Essentially I'm keeping the $11 events based on the exact system as detailed in CP for 2005, majors will be double points, and the championship will be triple points. Also, for the majors, the top 18 (10-18 same amount) will receive points, and the top 27 (possibly the whole field) in the championship.

Here's the Cardplayer verbatim: Place finished - first place receives 120 points; second place, 100; third place, 80; fourth place, 60; fifth place, 50; sixth place, 40; seventh place, 30; eighth place, 20; ninth place, 10

In majors, 1st would award 240, 9th 20, and 10-18 10.
In the champ, 1st would award 360, 9th 30, 10-18 15, and 19-27 10.

Good luck to all players, may this be the best season yet!

I wasn't a poster for the start of ASOP4.

Well I guess that explains it. The rest of it made a lot of sense. It was just this part that made me chuckle.

My domination of the ACOOP is no accident.

My domination of ASOP V is a foregone conclusion.

With Cohete and Spidur out of the way, can anyone stop me?

I've defeated elephants, Canadians, actuarial drop outs, drama queens...

It wouldn't surprise me to see participation drop as everyone starts to realize that when I'm signed up, everybody else's EV drops to negative.

gator, are you running that side pool for the top point scorer that you mentioned in some previous thread?uh, do what? :duh:

edit: oh, i know what you are talking about. man, my brain is fried.

sure, i will run it. it will be for those that want in as of the first night of ASOP V. there is NO INTENTION to take away from the original purpose of ASOP, so all players are welcome any week, every week, only when they can, etc etc. and it's just good playing with good actuary folk.

but for those that want to put a little greed into it, this side bet will have more money tied to it.

Must have been his lucky hand. That is what knocked me out on the bubble. Cohete - I moved in from the SB for about 5-6 x the BB with Ax and you called instantly with QT. Afterwards you said it was basic SNG strategy. I can guess, but I am curious what you meant.

My guess - I'm short stack so you think I will move in with any two. Having two face cards is an easy call since (a) you will sometimes be ahead or at a near coin toss with some added chips already in the pot and (b) it will not knock you out.

Good win last night. BTW - I'm not complaining about this call at all, just wanted to hear your insight.

Cohete009
06-13-2006, 10:01 AM
This happens a ton during end game sng's on party. You get to 4-5 people left, and the blinds get huge. Although we always would prefer to put our chips in first, there comes a time where you have to get lucky or go home since folding equity -->> 0 when short stacked and short handed.

And when it does become a battle of the blinds, have seen many a player push all in with any 2, 5 high, T high, etc. Maybe they have a hand, and if they do, just hoping for two lives. And in that situation, knew that you would push with any Ace, any K, any small pair, or even a hand like JTs or worse.

The only place cohete cares about in asop's is first place, so this was an easy gamble. In sng's it can be a little bit tougher since you want to get in the money, but sometimes you have to just go with gut instinct, and gambool.

Hey Matty, I wanted to thank you again for the buyin. I had a good time, even though I busted out on a hand I played like a total donkey.

I would like to play again, but I am moving cross country over the next few weeks. Hopefully I can catch up later this season...

I just thought it was odd.

it happens a lot in private games.

There are no chat restrictions in those games, so you get that more. I don't know why there are not chat restrictions....should be the same rules.

Poker <> math. I probably make the same play she did early on in an ASOP.
Then again, if you judge playing well by matching the text books, I stink (and will continue to stink as I refuse to play that way.

My recollection...

Very early all stacks = around 1,500

Gator in SB with 88
MH in mid position with (I believe AK)
Matty? in late position with (I believe AQ)

MH raises to 60, Matty to 200, gator calls with her 88, MH calls.

The play that is causing all the contraversy is gator's bad call with a mid pocket pair OOP.

Of course if the flop is not A8x this hand is not being discussed this morning (or ever).

MountainHawk
07-25-2006, 08:41 AM
gator in SB, me in MP, DDT on Button.

folds to me, I raise to 80 with AdK folds to DDT, who makes it 200 or 240 to go ... I think it was 200, but not positive. gator flat calls, I call.

Flop was TK8, 2 diamonds. Gator makes some tiny bet (1/3 pot or something like that), I raise to something like 600, DDT folds, gator pushes, I call. She has 88.

All I want her to admit is you don't have implied odds to call 200 with 88 out of position preflop. I ranted at her push last night too, but that was wrong, because I forgot I had raised so much.

If she's LUCKY, she's staring at 3 overcards to her pair, maybe even 4. At worst the reraiser has a higher pair and she's in a world of hurt. I'm all for set chasing, but not early in a tournament when you are facing a raise AND a reraise, and you are OOP.

DblDownTrent
07-25-2006, 09:13 AM
it is a good discussion hand. it was like the 3rd hand, MP, hawk opens 4x to 80, I pop it up to 200 on the button, gator calls 190 more from the sb, flop 8TK, gator bet out 200, hawk reraised I folded, money got all in. gator 88, hawk AK, me irrelevant but AQ.

It's not a call I make with 88 from the small blind with an MP raise and a button reraise, and I think it was mathematically incorrect, but given that MH did the initial raise (which doesn't really define a range - no offense MH, but you've got a pretty loose image preflop in these) and it was me that reraised on the button, maybe gator knew that neither of us were very strong.

Since she's gonna be out of position with 88, it's pretty safe to say she's not winning anymore without a set, and the few times she may, you can offset that with the times she's going to lose when she does it a set. so she needs to win about 9x - 10x her original call to make it a good call, which is bigger than either of our remaining stacks - I doubt she's stacking both of us if she hits a set.

I would bet that if that exact hand is played out 1,000,000+ times, it's a -ev play, but I've been known to be wrong before.

Matty
07-25-2006, 09:16 AM
ok here's my breakdown:

Arguments in favor of a call:
- Your threshold goes down a little bit from 8:1/10:1/whatever it normally is because you're in a 3 way pot and there's a chance you can take them both for a ride.
- Usually in an ASOP a strong reraise preflop indicates a very strong hand, which you want DDT to have so you have good implied odds.

Arguments in favor of a fold:
- MH's table image. You want your opponents to have AA/KK here but we've all seen Hawk raise in EP with 74o. If you want to stack him he's going to have to hit the flop hard and you're going to have to hit it harder. Unlikely.
- MH's table image. Everyone knows he's LAG, including DDT. DDT's reraise range is going to be wider because of it.
- MH's table image. He's going to have action back to him after you call. If he's screwing around, he's going to fold and you lose your multiway advantage. If he actually has a hand, he's probably going to re-pop it and now you don't even get to see a flop.

I'd fold it.

agreed...and to add on to what you said, she wasn't closing the action with her call.

So I think you are spot on with regard to who raised (again, no offense to MH, as I know your ASOP style to be much different than your "normal" style) and then your reraise to isolate.

I still think 9x-10x is about right for set chasing. I know jayhawk (I think it was jayhawk...could be wrong) would advocate 20x for set chasing...(and I think he has VERY valid reasons for that argument)

But I think we can all agree it has to be more than the 7.5-1 that is offered for flopping a set, since you have to build into account that you won't always get paid for flopping your set, AND, you won't always win when you flop a set.

I am personally going through a transition period in my game. Conciously trying to shake my super tight style I learned a few years back playing 5/10 and 10/20 live ring games. I brought that same style over to online MTTs and did ok, (am up a few bucks lifetime), but I realized (imagined) at some point that there has to be a whole other level to get to.

Look at the MTT SNG players with the best success on this board. Not trying to diss anyone but, I would put MO and Freeman at the top of that list. I have watched them play a few times and see the hands they show down.

They get lucky alot. Why do they? Because they put themselves over and over again in the situation where luck can happen.

Playing rock solid textbook tight is fine, and I believe, profitable in the long run. I just think it is also boring, and not likely to get you to the "next level". It is simply too easy to replicate to distance you from the pack.

So this 88 may not have been optimal, and I may even have folded it, it's close, but to declare it completely and totally wrong would mean you would be forced to say free and mo played hands completely and totally wrong too. And probably more wrong and in far more expensive places than this.

It is a game. If it was a math exrecise, I would not play it.

Out of position, sure, but if the cards don't fall properly, I see someone behind me having a hard time making a continuation bet if they haven't hit. If they have AA or KK when the action comes back around [to MH], then he puts more money in and I fold. You can't fault someone for making a gamble and always playing by the book. Bama certainly showed us (me) last night a case where calling with KQ is correct.at least IMO, i'm not sure if it's correct, but it's a play i often make when the bb is a semi-short stack.

I absolutely think it was correct. The first decision is whether you want to play KQ for my stack size. Once you decide that, limping and calling is the correct move. If you raise and I push, you have to call. As you said, by limping it really opened up the hands with which I would push.

My big question(s) is: What do you do if PokerWidow doesn't fold?

If you gave cohete a $1 for every bad play that cohete has made....

Didn't know about that. In that case carry on.
Well, whatever. I'm just going to put gator on ignore here and block her on MSN. I ended up calling her names last night and berating her. She's just too stubborn and confrontational for my taste, especially given my mental state now. Better to just keep the peace by avoiding the conflict at this point.

Most of us gave you more than that.

My big question(s) is: What do you do if PokerWidow doesn't fold? Then I fold most likely. That was another reason I didn't raise. I figured she'd call or re-raise if her hand was much better than mine.

Gator seems to get blocked a lot. I guess she is like the "Mike the mouth" of the AO.

Damn. I wanted to be Mike the Mouth.

That's what I decided too. If she flat calls, you are getting very good odds, but you are pot committed in a 3-way at that point. I can't remember what your stack was, but I'm fairly sure you didn't have enough to chase her off at that point (after she calls).
