Hi. Would anyone shed some light on a symbol that popped up on the NEAS Module Four practice problems? It is a small case "y", sub i, with a hat. The notation has been a little sketchy for this course. Thanks so much.

Doesn't that stand for residual?

The residual is given by capital Y with a hat. That is why I was confused about the small case "y".

When I was learning regression in stats, \hat{Y_i} refers to a i-th vector of residuals, not sure if that's the case here.

Maybe the RSS, regression sum of squares? Sum(yhat-yhatbar)^2

The small "y" with the hat is the fitted value of y in deviations form.

Thanks everybody. Keep in touch.
