I'm not in the NYC area and I won't be a tutor but I suggest taking the Ramanathan Online Preparatory Course for course 1. I had failed Course 1 before and took his course and passed. You have weekly assignments and exams and then 3 or 4 other exam-like comprehensive exams that are very tough and great for preparing for the exam. I felt like the exams he gave were more difficult than the actual exam. It's well worth the money! Kudos to GVR!

16 week course, wow. So this online course must satisfy the ~400 hours needed to study then?

Darnit, 2 days left to decide whether to enroll or not. (Jan 15 deadline)

But how much more value does this online course offer than from what the ASM textbook offers alone?

thx.

1. You can email GVR questions about problems on the quiz/exam.
2. Online forum for the course to ask others questions, how they are doing and possibly get together to study.
3. (this was a big one for me) disciplined you to get so much studying done every week. We had a reading assignment and would have to work so many problems to prepare for the quiz that would be due late saturday night.

This was wonderful for me and I'm considering taking a similar course for Course 2 through bpptraining.

Thanks Carol Burnett for your very quick response.

I too did not pass course 1 and yes I feel #3 was very essential. Also, I felt that retention of the material and test taking techniques specific to course 1 problems were critical.

Were you working when you took this online course1?

Yes I was working full-time when i took the course. The course took up a lot of time but then actuary exams take up a lot of time. Plus i didn't have study hours at work yet. It can be done though!

Here's a link for more details:

Did you find it hard/frustrating to type questions in and not be able to explain in words where you were having trouble? Also, if someone else in my office registers for this exam, will it be possible for me to "follow along" without actually signing up if I purchase the review book?
Any info would be helpful, for the deadline is tomorrow and I am still unsure as to whether this is what I'm looking for or not!

Initially, I did find it bothersome just to type in the answers but then the exam is going to be like that so it's good practice. But I emailed him frequently esp. near the end with questions and just tried to be as detailed as I could. I'm sure you probably could follow along. He send out notes each week so I guess you could copy those or just read the same assignment he does and do the same problems. A lot of the problems (not all) are from the study guide or the prob book and old exams. And I guess if you had questions you could talk to your co-worker and if they didn't know, they could email GVR. But I don't know if you'd feel the same pressure to get it done if you weren't emailing your answers in each week and not wanting to feel like an idiot when you can only answer 3 out of the 10 problems. But if you just took the same approach by getting as much done each week as they do in the course, you'll be fine. It was well worth the money (even though my company did reimburse me after i passed) :D
