I was reading the preface of Loss Models (stalling on actual reading) and when I got to the part about the cover, I realized I'd never really paid attention to it.
It really is an odd cover. Particularly when compared to the first edition.
I know the authors tell that its from when the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers flooded, and they sort of tie it into the book, I'm really thinking there is more of a story behind it. Klugman is at Drake according to the title page, so it makes sense.
Anyone know anything more about the development of this unique cover?

AFAIK, there's not much of a story behind it, other than it was a cool picture, represented a loss (), and was in Des Moines, where Prof. Klugman teaches/lives.
He told us about the cover development at one point, not sure if there was any story beyond what's printed in the book... who knows. PM Him and ask him?

That would mean admitting that I'm enough of a dork to have read the preface.
I do think it might be cooler if there was someway to incorporate a picture of the same area on a normal date. Get rid of the blurb on the back and replace it? Not really feasible, but it would be cool.

1 word, 2 syllables: holo-gram :geek:

I like that! More people would definitely notice it. . . Could be a bit freaky though
I'd love to know how one pronounces hologram with 2 syllables!

When you're as fond of holograms as I am, the word is actually only one syllable. I broke it apart for the lay man,

I just realized something when I was reading a reply. Reading the preface is not really evidence of being a dork, it's more evidence of procrastinating. . .
At least they did make it an interesting read. My hat's off to Klugman.

Reading the preface is evidence of being a dork, so is laughing at the footnote on Page 531.

They could put a picture of Tacoma bridge falling down like they do on a few DE books

I'd forgotten the footnote on 531.
I had a book for DE which was full of jokes including the index.. I think it was Blanchard and Devaney.. I often wonder why more books don't add these little tidbits of amusement... If I remember, there was even a red sox joke in the DE book.
and as a bonus: once readers start discovering these things, they seek out things like footnotes and the index which they might otherwise ignore.

yeah Devany, Blanchard and Hall was the one I used as well I think. They're really big guys in dynamical systems at Boston I think? I liked their books a lot.
