I found Course I Exam Preparation Manual by Averbach & Mehta to be most helpful. The Notes on the website give you an insight, but the A&M manual shows you how to use the information you're given.

I would strongly recommend two books listed in course 1 reading:
Stewart/Hasset and Bean. Going through the examples should help you understand the material much better. Also, Bean has some theoretical topics that were not in the reading before the book was added ti the cyllabus (last sitting), i.e. geometric average, limited expected value, random variables for whole life, term, annuity et cetera. I am not sure if SOA is testing this material because they don't release the exams any more.
Good luck studying.
