View Full Version : Actuaries to run the country...

I've been thinking about all this stuff going on, and it seems to me that the people who are making all the big decisions in our country (and the world) have had no where near enough training in logic and analytical thinking for their level of responsibility. At least their actions seem to indicate this.
Plato said that all future leaders should train in athletics as children and then have six year of rigorous mathematical training.

I am hereby proclaiming that the whole of the US government should be run by actuaries, or individuals with a Ph.D. in a math intensive physical science or in mathematics itself. I mean the whole government too: Executive, Legislative, and especially the Judicial.
PS aside from the inherent anal retentiveness associated with some actuaries, this will work out great. :toast:

The reason one gets greasy/unethical/unintelligent people as the leaders of the country is that most sensible, intelligent people won't run for politics. Who wants to have their entire lives open to public scrutiny and constant bombardment? Plus most decent folks won't due what it takes to win elections.

They delegate a lot of such thinking to other people.

Maybe, but the politicians apparently aren't listening to what logical people must be telling them.

We would have to find a way to motivate actuaries to want to "serve", and yes, of course, the whole system would have to change. As far as the public scrutiny, the puritanical expectations we have of our leaders should change too. Either way, who better to have their lives open to public scrutiny than actuaries?

What you describe here is a system of government called "meritocracy". People with "merit" get promoted in such a society. As you can imagine, this is a very utopian society.

Question: Can a senator's son become President? :P

Not to mention the fact that, to many sensible intelligent people, it isn't worth about a buck and a half (for a House or Senate Seat) to do what it takes. (This is not to say that I wouldn't take a buck and a half, well, to ... :) .)
