I don't know how to make those link thingies, but check out the WC new game : Mole Challenge 2!! Mister Nacho is running it and it looks fun. It would be cool to have some RF join in.

Mole of the water cooler 2 (http://www.casact.org/students/forums/noncgi/Forum14/HTML/002875.html)

And I still haven't read his post.

Patience, what was the other sig you liked?

I may be interested, but I have two concerns.

Concern number one: I have never seen the show, and I don't understand what to do if I were to play.

Concern number two: I'm not registered at the Water Cooler.

Concern number 1.5: There may be too much inside information over there for a Rebel to be competitive.

Is there any information out there on other Forum-based games that we could set up? I liked the a-z game (although I missed it). Are there any others?

Gandalf

Yes, looks intriguing. I just e-mailed Hagbard concerns similar to DDA's, since I wasn't sure any of you WC types would be checking in again today.

Nacho wrote (over there): "Please note:
As Draco would say: 'The mistakes of the past have been corrected.' "

Is he saying that having a game on this more open environment was a mistake  ?

Mulan

From what I have heard, the first WC Mole game was very time consuming and the point system cumbersome.

I believe Hagbard said you could ask the CAS to register you.

I am WC, but new. I am joining the game. If there is inside WC jokes, I won't know them either - so there (foot stamp).

Ugh. Too much work. Too much TV to watch. No time to deal with "the CAS" (whatever that means).

So there is no way to play "cross-forum"? S'okay.

Mulan
11-16-2001, 06:21 PM
DDA, I posted on the WC about whether the game host would play the game cross-forum. I'll let you know what happens.

If a WC resident reads this, please post over there that I'm interested, but not sure I can commit to it. I need to know more about the conditions and time frames.

I did e-mail Mike Boa (is he the right person?) about getting Gandalf registered on the WC.

Gandalf, I will inform mister nacho of your interest with a post. I posted The mistakes of the past have been corrected. because of past problems with time consumption. Mister nacho and I have developed several games that have been played on the Water Cooler. We both have realized that the games need to be created such that very little time is taken from the employers of participants. Originally this meant actual game time should be limited to a small time frame like the contest Ebenezer Kohl administered here. There was a certain unfortunate game idea of mine that had a limited time frame for each participant. However each participant was extremely concerned about the play of every other participant. Additionally participants were practicing at home expending countless hours preparing to play. This resulted in the debacle known as Othello. As time passes it is becoming increasingly funny, but nobody wants to repeat the near 1500 posts and emails this one game consumed, not to mention personal study of the game and considerations of bringing in a consultant on the game. Mister nacho hopes to avoid this at all costs.

Anonymous

Firstly, please excuse the feminin of my usual moniker. Someone else nabbed the "mister nacho" label for some reason, and I registered with this when I was invited to play with the WC Chicks in the A-Z game.

OK, Draco properly addressed the question about what was meant by "the mistakes of the past." As fun as some of the past challenges were, they were very time-consuming. That will not be the case here.

There is no need to watch the show to play this game. But knowledge of how it is played is helpful, so here's a quick synopsis for those who didn't watch it:

A group of people are presented with challenges. If they succeed, money is placed in the pot (the winner at the end gets all accumulated money). If they fail, money is not added. In some cases, money is withdrawn if rules of the game are broken. Within the group, there is a double agent - a mole. The mole's role is to gain trust, and appear helpful, while trying to sabotage the challenge without being too obvious. In some cases, the mole will not sabotage the game to hide its identity. If the mole thinks they won't win the challenge, he/she may really try hard, knowing it's work has already been done. Other times, there is outright sabotage, but usually done in such a way that there may be another explanation for the mole's actions.

Each week, all the players take a quiz. The quiz is a series of questions about the mole. Whoever scores the worst on the quiz (i.e. the most clueless person as to who the mole is) is "executed." That person is out of the game. So, there are a couple goals to the game: (a) be successful in challenges to win money; (b) pay attention to everyone's actions and figure out who the mole is.

A strategy of some of the players is to at times do something that can be perceived as an act of sabotage. This is to get people to vote for them as the mole, giving them a better chance at surviving the execution quiz.

There are a couple terms that are helpful:

exemption: the host of the game may at any time offer a player an exemption from the next quiz. The player generally has to choose between sabotaging the challenge and losing out on the money and getting an exemption, or declining the offer of the exemption. An exemption means that the person will not have to take the next quiz and will stay in the game.

Neutralization: A player may be neutralized, meaning that there is no chance of that person getting an exemption for the next quiz.

Execution: The person with the lowest score on the mole quiz.

The bulletin board rules are posted, so no need to reiterate those here. Notice that it's different from the TV show. It was very difficult coming up with challenges for the group to achieve. It is much easier to have competitions. Thus the change. Also, the point scoring in the previous game was basically meaningless. This time it will be more meaningful. Highest total at the end wins.

Finally, I don't think there is any "inside information" between water cooler folks that will matter in the game. A newbie should have just as good of an opportunity. I suppose some people know other's strengths, so they may have some insight. But that could also work against them in this game.

I don't believe registering for the Water Cooler is any big deal. I can't think of any good way to run this contest across forums, but I'm willing to listen to suggestions.

Gandalf
11-17-2001, 01:56 PM
Gandalf has been known to feign offense where none is warranted, just to stir up interest (?). I can't imagine any RF fans, even Gandalf, really took the "mistakes of the past" as dissing us.

He's even forgiven that skunk or whatever it was  for leaving Aimless.

As far as water cooler registration, automated registration was shut down the last two times I tried, but I assume the CAS staff will be able to help me. I even rashly suggested in the e-mail to Mike Boa that I could find some WC regulars who could vouch that my RF posts were within WC standards.

MN, I'm sending you a private message on this forum with my concerns and an e-mail address.

If I'm not in Mole 2, it will be due to concerns about time commitments, not in objection to the conditions, other participants, or those running the game. Or unless I'm sulking because you won't promise I can be the mole.

"This is like asking how long can you stare at the sun."

Don't be so technical. Even though there's less daylight in winter, come up with a number. Make sure it's consistent with your resident state, though; days now are shorter in AK.

Or were you implying you would jog forever in pursuit of Ammie, based on this:

Gandalf, do you have any idea about how obsessive I can be? For this type of question I don’t want to suggest that I could jog a marathon but at the same time I could easily jog a reasonable distance without a problem. Just how far could I jog without stopping? I don’t know. Trying to find out would result in great physical pain.

But as nacho is not soliciting personal info, does it matter? Gandalf is thousands of years old, has been described in this forum as behaving like an 8th grader, and IRL is somewhere in between.

Gandalf
01-09-2002, 04:21 PM
ODB, If you are interested in playing, the profile is nacho's post at 14:06 on 12/18.

The rules on page 1 say there are weekly quizzes about the mole, with most clueless person dropped. The profiles are the source of info about the players. E.g., if a quiz question is "How many bicycles does the mole own?" you'll answer based on your guess as to who the mole is and that person's profile (all the profiles will be available to all players, I believe). You may want to consider all the profiles before answering. E.g., if 8 profiles say "1 bike", you may want to answer 1, even if the person that's your best guess for the mole has 3 bikes.

Apparently, this is supposed to be perceived as some kind of trickery, but I've no idea why.

Perhaps I'm missing the point...is there a goal to the game, or is it a role-playing game, like Dungeons and Dragons?

I'm not sure if you are really confused or if you are just pulling our legs, but here goes.

It is kind of like a role playing game -sort of. There are us players and one of us is the mole (I'm betting on Kid Rock, but I have nothing really to go on yet.) Detail about the profiles are provided to help us answer quiz questions or may be useful during the challenges. mister nacho will give us a challenge every week - the goal is to win it to collect points and also to gain information about the who you think the mole is by their actions/inaction.

Right after the challenge, mister nacho will post a quiz about the identity of the mole, the player that is the most clueless (scores the worst) on the quiz is out. This continues until there is 2 players - the winner and the mole. Then all is revealed (if nacho and the mole don't lie about the result of the final quiz, just to pull someone's chain) and the post mortem begins.

See, if we can never trust Nacho, then the game has no point. We'll never be able to tell who the mole is, since everyone, including Nacho could be lying about it. So if we never have any basis for discovering "truth" what are we doing?

Unless we are to assume that Nacho is ALWAYS lying or ALWAYS telling the truth, we'll never be able to discover who the mole is.

Buzz, you are correct. I take full responsibility for that error. However, because of the way I have put together the profile clues, I can't change it. For the purposes of the game, you are now officially three feet, three inches tall. Sorry.

If I change it, and none of the clues change, that provides more information. If I change it and some clues change, that also provides information. So, you are 100 cm through no fault of your own.

Hey, didn't I see you in Wizard of Oz?!
Actually, that was my concern. If the 100 cm was a typo (and my 188 cm was carried through the clues) one may get erroneous result.

At 100cm / 100kg you can bet I'm totally buff

Although, since we can't trust anyone, Buzz might not be 100 cm in either his profile or according to the clues.

We must also include the possibility that Buzz isn't even playing the game.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Its now occurred to me that I might only be communicating with just one other person who is operating under many different aliases, so that I may be playing this game merely tete-a-tete.

Reasoning further, its possible that *I'm* the one talking to myself with aliases I just don't remember creating and the whole game, perhaps the whole board, is merely mental masturbation.

Speaking of masturbation...mmmm...donuts....

Don't think the rest of us haven't noticed.

I figured you all must have. Hagbard sent me his last set of answers. He answered 50% with me as the mole; 50% with Flora. He was rather unlucky to have been executed with 10 right answers, but he was slow reaching that conclusion and paid for it.

Rumor has it Flora's behavior looks so suspicious that even she's answering that she's the mole (if she's answering at all.)

Mulan
02-06-2002, 11:32 PM
Well, Hagbard sent ME his last set of answers and they were a combination of Kid Rock and Big Ed. I think this seriously points to one of the ladies as being the mole - maybe Polly Molial OR Mole Insider?

And even more especially, how can a mole exchange <s>her</s> his or her quiz answers?

Gandalf
02-07-2002, 01:04 PM
I didn't see any rule against exchanging quiz answers. It would be grossly improper to exchange answers after someone was eliminated, but the exchanges between Hagbard and me and I suppose between Hagbard and Mulan were before the executions were announced.

Sure, it's a little extra work to construct quiz answers when you don't have to send them to nacho, but sometimes it's nice to see if you can target a particular person for elimination. Nothing personal against Hagbard, more like an ego trip.

Our examination of these statements was made in accordance with generally
accepted accounting principles, and in our opinion, the accompanying balance
sheet, statement of income and retained earnings present fairly the financial
position of this company.

Which really means:

We've gone through the figures that management gave us, but you gotta realize
that generally accepted accounting principles leave a hell of a lot of leeway
to dick around with earnings. Plus, this company is paying us a boatload of
money to certify these numbers, and if we don't, they'll find another

I was going to bring up the storming of the fort. Flyer, the Mole 1 champion, was a maniac during that.

Flyer was amazing. I miss her
I wish I could have known her - where is she now anyway?? I bet if she were playing now, she would make a great mole!!

Yes, but hasn't Flora seemed confused about the rules every week so far. Don't you think it would be sensible to at least show them to her in advance? I think Polly has seemed a lot more confused than Flora... Besides Polly Molial has a nice ring to it!

It may just be an act with Polly. Somehow, she's managed to win 2 out of 3, hasn't she?

Flora, on the other hand, has been so confused that...

NM, perhaps she does understand quite well.

Yeah, whatever happened to Flyer? Is she posting under a different name or did she just stop posting?

Flyer. Flyer. It has a familiar ring to it.

I remember now, that was my name when I was airborne rather than underground. I won't be using it again before the game is over, if ever.

I can't really remember exactly though.

You can find some of her old posts by going to http://www.casact.org and searching for "flyer". She doesn't seem to have reregistered under the new software.

OK, Flora, the gloves are coming off this week (yours may be more like furry mittens).

To heck with mole impersonations. To heck with those points I get when my team loses. Gandalf is tired of being trifled with. This week my team wins.

All out. No holds barred. An exemption, if offered, will be declined.

whoooooo

I see that as a challenge to all who are on Gandalf's team this week to royally screw him over

I on the other hand will continue trying to win as usual and not pretend that anything is any different for me this week than it has been the past few. Should be interesting to see whether we are on the same team again this week!

Big Ed?

Flora?
Polly Nomial?

Funny, right after this little ditty was posted, Gandalf was executed? Not so sure Nacho didn't go off in a jealous rage?

Of course on the Noncontestant thread, Gandalf picked himself to be the Mole, after being executed...maybe not the most astute contestant we had.

Draco told me if I did worst on the first quiz there, I would move back into the main contest. Sort of like shooting the moon.

Once, it was a good bet that the mole was male: 8 males and 4 females started the game. Now it is 50-50 on a random guess basis. Wonder what will happen next week?

I'm sure your calculator is OK, the problem, as usual, rests w/ the person pressing the buttons. Of course Moles were never known for their math abilities.

Compared to most of the above-ground dwelling humans, I would be good at math - I am an actuary afterall. But compared to just actuaries...maybe not, I wouldn't still be sitting for exams at age 53 if I was really good at math.

Flying below the radar screen? How so? I'd be the least effective mole there is, no matter how bad I screw up my team wins (4-0) Baby! Either I have the most points, or as da Mole, I have yet to score.

Just realized, Monday is a federal holiday. Now besides the fact that I won't need to leave the game to run out and get the mail, I also won't be at work.

I could dial in, but we don't live in the city, so we have a regular old telephone line modem and it is terribly slow. I'm afraid I won't be able to give the same stellar performances that I have turned in in the past.

Mister Nacho, any way we can change the game day to Tuesday?
