View Full Version : Invention ideas for 7 year olds

My sister called my nephew needs help coming up with an idea for an invention for a school assignment. Well, he doesn't just need an idea for an invention, he has to actually make it too.

I'm drawing a blank and instead of admitting defeat I'd be willing to take one of your ideas and pass it off as my own.

Thanks!

Have him "invent" some cupcakes, and then give a couple to you as thanks.

Another one of those dumb projects designed by teachers that everyone knows the parents did instead.

OTOH, my invention at 8 yrs old (same type of project) was a model of a big hamster wheel (the model was a real hamster wheel) with tiny little garbage bags inside. You could, you know, wheel the garbage to the curb instead of carrying it ;)

A cold fusion reactor might get him a pretty good grade. Might even be lucrative as well.

Here's a couple of ideas:
1. Some sort of Rube Goldberg machine that opens his textbook or something. This would be seen as creative and add some fun to the class.
2. Here's a device that a little boy might actually find useful. A tool that easily picks up all his small toy thingies of a certain size. Think about one of these golf ball shaggers (http://www.golfballs.com/PM1380/Johnson-Golf-Ball-Shagger.html). Now imagine that you've designed a similar device to pick up all your little army men, matchbox cars, or some other toy of similar size. He could make it out of an old wrapping paper tube or perhaps a plastic vacuum cleaner attachment and use a trash bag as the reservoir.

Hope those don't sound too lame - it's all I could come up with off the top of my head. When you decide on an invention, please be sure to let us know what grade we got.:D

You're better off helping him fantasize about what to invent, and let him get the idea himself E.g. What's something you hate to do? Wash my hands. What's something you like to do? Play video games! What about a machine that lets you play video games while you wash your hands? Or Tv connected to the sink that when you're washing it turns on?

P.S. Can the invention be something like a new word? Children like to make up new words and that's easier for a 7-year-old to build than something involving electricity and internal combustion engines.

... Although a State Math Problem Database could be useful too...

TDA:

Why is your sister asking you for help, and why are you offering it? Now, if the kid needs help brainstorming, or getting materials to create it, that's one thing. But this is supposed to be a kid's invention, not a kid's relative's invention.

At my son's school, the kids were required to invent a game using a simple machine. So my son took a cardboard box, made it into a ramp, and set up some plastic bottles to be knocked down by a ball launched off the ramp.

I pick him up from school that day, and I see 10 or 12 similar kid-built games, and about 5 things obviously built (in 2 cases, obviously BOUGHT) by parents. WTF?

A mailbox that opens from the back, so you can send your kids out to get the mail (when it 21 degrees out), and not worry about them having to stand in the street for 10 seconds, not paying attention. Better for people who live on country roads, as opposed to subdivisions.

he could try to create lutherans :shrug:I tried to do that once, but a simple misreading during the "research" phase of the project led to difficulties.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to nail feces to a church door?

How about: a homework assignment one can give a seven year old and actually have a reasonable expectation that the child does it himself.

When I was in 4th grade, they had us each make a machine that would signal the teacher instead of raising our hands. It had to have the function that we could both raise and lower it, and we could keep it "raised" in the event that the teacher's back was turned and didn't see it get activated initially.

A big piece of string, a couple pulleys from the Tinker Toys, and my dad's old slide-rule with a cardboard hand taped to the end did the trick for me.
