What is Fischer Random? It's normal chess, but the opening position is computer-randomized. The pawns stay in the same place, but the first-row pieces are jumbled up. It's such a simple concept, but it's so complicated. All opening databases are instantly out the window!!
All rules are the same as in normal chess with one exception: castling (which is explained below).
Castling: Just like in normal chess, you can castle if the King hasn't moved yet, and if the associated Rook hasn't moved. But regardless of where the king and rook are, their ending position is as if they had castled in normal chess. Castling with the queen-most rook will land the king and rook on c# and d#. Castling with the king-most rook will land them on f# and g#. Needless to say, those squares need to be vacant before you can castle there. If you're eligible to castle, you'll see a "0-0" or "0-0-0" button. You can click either of those buttons to see what the position will look like after castling. (Clicking the castling buttons doesn't constitute a Submit.)
Entering the tournament:
Step 1. Register with Scheming Mind (http://www.schemingmind.com/) (featured on my new website ;)). Registration is free and easy. After you register, go to My Details/Challenge Preferences. There you can set the maximum number of games at the top. Next to Chess960 check the box to say "I can be challenged to Chess960 games". (That's code for Fischer Random.) Next to Time Controls, make sure you have 'Standard' checked.
Step 2. Post your intent to play on this thread, tell us your Scheming Mind name, and say how many games you're able to play at one time. If you get filled up with games and you finish one of them, I'll assign you another game unless you tell me otherwise. You can change the number of games you wish to play at any time during the tournament.
Step 3. When you receive your game assignments, one of you challenge the other using the following process. Go to Players/Search Player Database. Type in the name of your opponent. If your opponent remembered to update their Challenge Preferences, you should see a challenge button.
Step 4. When you finish your game, post your game here for us all to enjoy. (Be sure to include the FEN line, which tells what the starting position is.)
Step 5. As you play your games, I'll keep up with the stats and update them periodically.
Rules of the tournament:
The games start now, and I'll make the first assignments in about an hour. You can join at any time during the open period. The open period runs till January 14, and any final games will be assigned on January 15. If you decide you wish to play no more new games during the open period, that's fine - just let us know.
Games are to be played on Scheming Mind, and are to have the 'Standard' time control - that is, 30 days + 1 day/move.
These games are just for fun and won't be considered in the PMS ratings.
As I assign games, you will not play the same player twice at the same time, but it's possible for you to play that same player again after you've finished a game with them.
Good luck and may the best Fischer win!!

Explanation of stats.
Here's a hypothetical stat sheet:
---------Player--------- GS GF W D L Pts Win%
1. Abstract Actuary (5) 5 3 2 1 0 2.5 0.667
2. Mel-o-rama (3) 5 4 2 1 1 2.5 0.500
Players are listed in order by Win%. The number in front of the name is what place you're in. The number after your name is the max number of games you want to play at a time.
GS = Games Started (Total)
GF = Games Finished (Total)
W = Win; D = Draw; L = Loss
Pts calculated with Win = 1.0; Draw = 0.5; and Loss = 0.0
Win % = W / GF

Help please. I've challenged AA to a normal game. Someone unknown to me has challenged me to a normal game. How do I delete games? I'm new (obviously) to this website.

Same thing happened to me a year ago. Check here (http://www.actuarialoutpost.com/actuarial_discussion_forum/showthread.php?t=47840&page=3) and scroll down.
It seems that the person receiving the challenge has the power to decline and the game will disappear. Do you see a Decline choice under the Submit button on your who-the-heck-is-this game? AA will have to decline your challenge as well.
I think I have it fixed now.

I'll give this a shot, although I can't move as fast as some others. (My apologies in advance to those who want super-fast games, or even fast games. I'll do my best.)
The site says a maximum of 8 challenges, so I'll go for that.

This is awesome. So far I really like schemingmind.com. I like that you are given a board to play out the position with and don't have to do all the analysis in your head. I also like that you can write notes to your opponent during the game. Also Fischer Random Chess is fun.

It was a great game that went back and forth a bunch of times. There was a period where I thought I was going to be lucky to get a draw out of it. Not sure why you sacked the second bishop, that is when I started to think about a win again.
Anyway, the starting position was 747 (not sure if that is all the info you need).
If it isn't - from left to right, from White's perspective [RKNNBQRB].
It was a fun game to play - very interesting.

Oh, and that "[RKNNBQRB]" should be good enough to identify the opening position.

Here's another game assignment, plus an option for Kohl.
Game #10. Exam Committee vs. Kohl
So, Kohl, this gives you 3 games total, which means you have 1 game I can assign you. Would you prefer a rematch with Abstract Actuary (colors reversed), or would you prefer to wait for another participant?
I defeated Ultimate Anyone? The start position was a big advantage to white. I had an attack off my first move that Ultimate countered for the first few moves.

Good game AA...I got very lucky! To be honest, I almost resigned because I thought you had a forced mate (if your King was on C2 instead of C3 I think you would have). I didn't see the Queen fork for a while. And you're right, if you had played Qb6 I was definitely dead.

Sorry about that, Abstract. The randomization came out that way. However, you could use one more game to get you up to a total of 8 (and match Ultimate).
Let me ask this question to everyone. Are you satisfied with the total number of games you got? If you'd like to play any more games (with the option to defer the game till after you finish one of your present games), just let me know by Wednesday morning, and I'll assign a couple more games.
(I'm satisfied with my own games, so I won't be taking any more.)

Great game, Hagbard. I’m surprised it closed to a draw with how aggressively we played.

Yeah, me too. I probably had a win somewhere in there, but I sure as heck didn't find it. Good job sniffing out my final mistake! :)

I'm not sure it was a mistake, but it was the move I was hoping you would make. ;)

I think "preoccupied" is an understatement. Let's see - exams - that's always a biggie. Then there are other things that popped up - getting sick, trying to get book published, entering contest, and now I'm composing music for a secret project. Aah!
But those are no excuses. You guys won those games fair and square. Kohl: I thought my bishop could hold off all three of your connected pawns, but now I don't think so. My rook sacrifice would have worked had I not played 34. Kd7 - to get in the way of my passer.
Suthrn: I simply underestimated you - nice opening attack.
I'll update the results, and next time I'll crush y'all!

Updated results: We still have three people tied with 100% win ratios: Suthrn, acctuary, and Exam Committee. EC has only one remaining game, and if he wins, he'll definitely lock in first place. (But with only 2 games played?)
Abstract Actuary still has the most points at: 4.0. Suthrn and Ultimate are the only two left who could surpass that.
Right now, Mel-o (me) and Ultimate are bringing up the rear with 0.0 pts. Ultimate has the most games in progress, so anything could happen!

Updated results: We still have the three tied for 1st. Exam Committee, the first to finish his games, has locked in his position at 1st (with only 2 games played we could have an interesting situation - if UA? and I both win 2 more games, and if Hagbard draws or wins 1 more, and if acctuary wins 1 more - then Exam Committee would be tied in last place for pt count - a lot of ifs but still possible). Suthrn and acctuary have to win both of their remaining games to stay at 1st.
UA? and I are still tied in last place. If I win only 1 game, UA? only needs to win 2 games to lock me into last place. (D'oh!)
Asbtract still has the lead in points. Only Suthrn can surpass him now, and I predict that the Suthrn v Abstract game will decide the winner there.
Good luck in finishing!

This one is going to sting because Ultimate Anyone? played a beautiful game. On moves 27 and 28 he opted not to take my bishop, and then I lucked into a checkmate. Perhaps taking my bishop was a bad move, all I know is that I thought he had my number this game with that move never taken.
Good game, UA.

Acctuary has been permanently knocked out of first place in win% leaving only Suthrn and Exam Committee.
